Small-Group Saint-Emilion and Pomerol Day Trip from Bordeaux

Bordeaux, France

Join this small-group day trip to the Saint-Emilion and Pomerol wine-making region of France. This full-day guided excursion from Bordeaux offers picturesque scenery, sightseeing and fine wines – the perfect day out from the city! Sample Bordeaux wines in two fascinating chateaux and explore the charming UNESCO World Heritage-listed village of Saint-Emilion.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of eight people, ensuring personalized attention from your expert local guide.

Traveling by luxury, air-conditioned coach, you’ll head north from Bordeaux to the Saint-Emilion and Pomerol wine-making region, home to the charming village of Saint-Emilion. Not only is it one of the most picturesque places in France, it's also one of the principal red wine areas of the Bordeaux wine region.

The chateaux (French for 'castles') that produce the region’s famous wines are divided into two distinct geographical areas, known as appellations. Chateaux in the immediate villages around Saint-Emilion produce wines for the Saint-Emilion appellation, whereas chateaux in the western Libournais region (an area known as Pomerol) produce wines for the Classified Growth Chateau of the Pomerol appellation.

Your full-day tour starts with a visit to a chateau in Saint-Emilion, where you’ll enjoy a Bordeaux wine-tasting session with your knowledgeable local guide. During the tasting, learn about the dominant grapes used in the individual appellation, and how factors such as climate and soil can enhance or influence a wine’s flavor.

In the hilltop village of Saint-Emilion, enjoy a 45-minute guided walking tour around its quaint and pretty streets. You’ll have time to spend at leisure in the village, so you use that opportunity to grab some lunch, admire the historic UNESCO World Heritage-designated buildings or enjoy some retail therapy in the local boutiques.

Then depart Saint-Emilion and travel to a nearby wine estate in the Pomerol appellation, where you will enjoy a wine tasting in a Grand Cru Classé chateau. You will be introduced to the art and techniques involved in the wine-making process and taken on a tour of the vat house and the cellars before returning to Bordeaux.

Fantastic trip!!!!! Guide was very entertained me and friendly. The stops on this tour are amazing and the day is just log enough. One warning- if you purchase wine, shipping to the US was very problematic when purchased in St-Emilion at the shop. Might want to carry home.

Excellent excursion, visits to 3 different wineries, Pomerol and St. Emilion Chateau La Dominique my favorite. We even stopped in front of Petrus. Enough time in beautiful St. Emilion. Emilia was very kind and full of knowledge.

The guide was professional and very knowlegable about the region. He selected a nice representation of interesting wineries. The vehicle was comfortable and clean as there were 6 of us on the tour. The only change would be spending more time in St. Emilion however, the problem is we would then spend less time at the wineries. We would highly recommend this tour and we may do it again!

This was a perfect way to spend one day in Bordeaux. The group size was just right 8 for everyone to taste without rushing. Each place we stopped gave us a different insight some aspect of growing grapes, making wine, tasting wine, from traditional to modern practices, from caverns to hi-tech. I enjoyed comparing the vintages! The village of Saint-Emilion is a great place to visit, especially since the weather was so good.

Emeline was fantastic and we learned so much from her. The trip was outstanding in that we went to three vineyards and tasted wine as well as took a historical tour of the small city and had time for lunch. I did this trip on my own a few years ago and cannot believe how much I missed on my own. Emeline gives great suggestions for lunch and what to see. Loved this trip and the wine tasting too!

The tour was really well organised, visiting three wineries and learning a great deal about Bordeaux wines. Many wine tours are lots of travelling and little about the wines, but as this area is only 40 minutes from Bordeaux the wine is definitely the main feature. My only disappointment was we didnt visit the winery featured on the brochure as I had wanted to see the architecture.

Wonderful day trip - comfortable vehicle MB - excellent guide - three very distinct wineries - beautiful lunch at St Emilion own choice and cost - good pick up point - easy to find at Bordeaux - nice wines to taste and to purchase if so inclined._br/_ Great time!!

This was a very special experience with our tour guide Emily. She was a wealth of knowledge not only about the wine region but about_br/_ art and history. We did two wine tours in the region, Medoc and St. Emilion. If you can only chose one do the St. Emilion experience._br/_ It was a lovely and informative day and offered three distinct wineries to visit and St. Emilion was and adorable place to_br/_ have lunch and wander around. Plus we learned when to drink French wines. You must let them rest 10 years at least before consuming.

There were only six people in our group so we were taken to the most amazing place in St. Emilion where we were allowed to descend a steep ladder into some underground caves that housed old vintages of wine. The entire day was well organized, comfortably paced with time to explore St. Emilion. Our guide Hugo was well informed and spoke English, and our special guide for the winery in St. Emilion was wonderful.

This was a great tour. The tour guide was very knowledge and was able to provide a lot of information. We visited 3 wineries which allowed us to compare and contrast between big, small, modern, tradition, etc. I would recommend this tour.

This was an excellent tour of 3 vineyards, each with unique elements to their particular tour. The tour guides in each location were terrific. The only disappointment on this tour was the Viator tour guide. He added absolutely nothing to the tour. There was no information or points of interest identified along the way. The tour information had also indicated there would be a bit of a tour of St-Emilion which is a must see if you're visiting Bordeaux. There was no information about this historic site at all, just a suggestion as to where to eat lunch and some time to walk about.

It was an incredible tour, and every guide at each vineyard was extremely passionate and gave great background and detail about their wine. I learned so much! We went to an additional vineyard than expected as well, which was great. The only thing the tour was missing was water throughout. Otherwise, I'd highly recommend to anyone coming to the area.

Loved the trip with a great guide, Emily, but would have liked more time to wander in St Emilion. Maybe visiting 2 vineyards instead of 3 would have given us more time for this.

The trip involved visiting three different but prestigious wine producers of different sizes, a wine tasting in the heart of St Emilion and a wander round the town of St Emilion. We didn't know much about wine making before the trip and were the least knowledgeable of the party of eight tourists, but this was fine - everything was explained and all the members of the group with all their different levels of knowledge all enjoyed themselves. I would recommend this trip if you like wine and want to see this very pretty part of the world and enjoy a drink or three of world class wines as you go along.

This was a top notch all-day trip with an amazing, fun and very knowledgable guide Karim. Thanks for teaching us all about the region's wine-making traditions and sharing the passion! We loved meeting the winery owners, wine-makers and understanding their day-to-day as well as the overall process for creating their magic!

Excellent tour! This experience was the exact reason we came to Bordeaux. We saw the countryside from the comfort of a small van with a knowledgeable guide. Emeline was an exceptional and informative guide. She was both polite and efficient. A gracious hostess and a great ambassador for both Bordeaux and France. The vineyards were excellent examples of French winemaking. Tours were led by family members from the Chateaus who were passionate about their wines and proud of their heritage and family histories. I learned a LOT about wine! The tour of St. Emilion was magical! A good combination of structured information and free time. The local food was exceptional. Of all my Viator tours, this one is my favorite..

Our guide Ugo picked us up promptly at the Tourist Office in Bordeaux, he was straight into the wines and wine making before we got into the air conditioned van! He was chatty and spoke great English on the way to the first stop at Chateau De Sales where we tasted four red wines. Our second stop was in St Emillion at Chateau Gaudet where Jeremy really made us welcome and gave us a great tour and in depth talk about wine making and tasting.... we tasted 6 wines in the shop in the village before a break for lunch. The third stop was Chateau Fernandez high on the slopes in St Emillion where it was cool and slightly more modern. It was 35 degrees during our tour and we had cold water provided and a lovely air condition Mercedes van.... a great tour well worth a day!

We had a fantastic time learning about the wines. Don't expect to visit the high end chateaus though. They don't accept tour groups. We were taken to small family run vineyards and had 7 glasses of tasting pours over the entire day so... if you want to get tipsy, drink lots of wine at the restaurant during lunch!

What a great day this was - wine, sun and Saint Emilion, you can't really go wrong. Out guide Leonie was fantastic, giving us information on everything that is France, be it the history, the food or of course the wine. The highlight for me was the time we spent with the actual wine makers at the chateaus where they provided us with an overview of the whole wine making process, including of course some tastings.

Jeremy lead eight of us on a day-long entertaining and informative wine tour. Oh, yes, thereas tadting, too. The four wineries that we toured offered a range of styles and varietals, which helped us appreciate that a depth of understanding of wines can not be achieved in a day.

We had a fabulous full day tour of 3 wineries and the St. Emilion town! Karim was incredibly knowledgeable and took us to 3 wonderful family-owned wineries in St. Emilion and Pomerol. Our favorite was Chateau Gaudet in Saint Emilion. We even played a fun game to test our new knowledge on the way back. I highly recommend this tour!

A very interesting and informative tour, well worth a day out of the city to visit three wine-making châteaux. Our main guide, Jeremy, was fantastic - as a local Bordelais he seems to have practically grown up among the vines! We also played a great game travelling back to the city afterwards. All in all, an ideal way to end our holiday in Bordeaux.

Spent a wonderful day learning all about the Pomerol and St Emillion wine areas. Our guide Jeremy was outstanding in his knowledge of the area and even more with the winemaking processes and explAining the diversity of the wines and how they are affected by the natural elements. Jeremy spoke perfect English making our trip so interesting and was always willing to assists us. Ophorus should be complimented on what an asset this young man is to their wine tours._br/_ Perfect Bordeaux weather and beautiful landscapes of rolling hills of green vineyards topped off by a great selection of reds to dampen the palate.
