Private Day Tour of Mont Saint-Michel from Caen
Caen, France
Visit one of the most iconic attractions in France on this private day trip to Mont St-Michel from Caen. Located just off the coast of Normandy, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed Benedictine abbey is a fascinating sight set in a unique location, amid a vast bay. Explore the abbey with your knowledgeable private guide and then enjoy free time to explore the cobblestone village. If time permits, you’ll also visit your choice of St-Lô, Balleroy, Avranches, Abbey of Cerisy, Villedieu les Poeles or Bayeux.
Your private guide will pick you up from your Caen hotel in the morning. Travel 1.5 hours by minivan through Normandy to the coast, where you’ll see Mont St-Michel perched on a rocky island amid a vast bay. This UNESCO World Heritage Site and undoubtedly one of Normandy's — and France’s — most spectacular attractions. When you arrive, your guide will lead you on a walk along the narrow cobbled streets to the top of the village. Learn about the history and symbolism of the 8th-century abbey as you visit its interior and explore the surrounding ramparts, built during the Hundred Years War. After your guided tour, you’ll have free time to browse the local shops, visit the island's museum, or have lunch at one of the village’s many restaurants. Take in the incredible views over the bay, and watch for the tides coming in and surrounding the island. If time permits, you may be able to visit another town or attraction, for up to one hour, before heading back to Caen. Specify in the Special Requirements section, at the time of booking, which place you would prefer: St-Lô, Balleroy, Avranches, Abbey of Cerisy, Villedieu les Poeles or Bayeux. See why St-Lô is nicknamed the Capital of the Ruins, witness the trademark style of Louis XIII in Balleroy, or learn about the birth of Mont St-Michel in Avranches, overlooking the bay. Or you can choose to learn about the Roman history of Bayeux, observe one of the best examples of Norman architecture at the Abbey of Cerisy, or discover the esteemed copper craftsmanship in Villedieu-les-Poêles. You’ll then head back to Caen to conclude your full-day tour.
To see Mont Saint-Michel was such a highlight. We had a very knowledgeable guide who picked us up at our accommodation at Caen, which was excellent - particularly due to the known strikes in France. The trip to MSM was also wonderful, in the Normandy countryside, so this was a bonus! I think my only disappointment was feeling a bit 'rushed' so we didn't get time to look through the village itself at MSM, in order to make lunch in the tourist village just before you get to the site. There were no language barriers and I am overwhelmed at seeing this, so would definitely recommend other make it a 'bucket list' item. Well worth the trip.

This tour is a must for those visiting the Normandy area. Our guide was wonderful! Very knowledgeable and fun to be with. We couldn't have seen or learned as much without her.

WHile this tour is expensive, I would highly recommend it - it is worth every penny! Our guide, Karine, was very knowledgable about Normandy and Brittany, and the entire trip was filled with her providing information about the area, it's history, and sites we were seeing. Her ability to skirt the crowds and show us things we would otherwise have missed was exceptional. Mont Saint-Michel is an amazing place, but having your own personal encyclopedia of knowledge giving you running commentary on the history and context made it extra special. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants a little more from their visit than a drive by photo opp.
