Private Tour: Normandy Landing Beaches, Battlefields, Museums and Cemeteries from Caen

Caen, France

Take a private tour from Caen to Normandy, where you’ll explore sites of the Allied invasion on June 6, 1944 – more famously known as D-Day. You can personalize this private tour to determine how long you spend at the various WWII sites. Your private guide will give you unique insight into the events that took place on the landing beaches and battlefields of Normandy and tell you about the British, American, Canadian and French troops. You can also visit the cemeteries and museums.

During the nights of June 5 and 6, 1944, more than 16,000 paratroopers landed in Normandy, in northwestern France, and the D-Day invasion of World War Two began. Soon after, British, American, French and Canadian troops landed on various beaches on the Normandy coast and engaged in heavy fighting over the following days, which eventually led to the end of the European conflict of WWII.

This flexible private tour from Caen allows you to personalize your own itinerary – see the sites and attractions you want for however long you want! Visit the famous landing beaches, like Utah Beach (the first beach secured by the Allies) and Omaha Beach (where some of the heaviest fighting took place, giving it the nickname Bloody Omaha). You can also visit the Airborne Museum of Saint-Mere-Eglise or the American Cemetery, on the eastern end of Omaha Beach, which commemorates the US soldiers who died in this battle. This expansive space of reflection is the final resting place of 9,387 soldiers.

Or maybe you’d rather spend time at Sword Beach, where the British, along with Free French soldiers, began their invasion of Normandy and quickly moved to capture Pegasus Bridge. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the Hillman Bunker Complex, outside the village of Colleville-Montgomery; the Merville Battery Museum; and the Commonwealth Military Cemeteries, where messages and epitaphs bear testament to the lives lost during the Normandy invasion.

If you’re interested in the Canadian participation around Juno Beach, visit the Juno Beach Center and the Canadian Cemetery near the villages of Veny-sur-Mer and Reviers. You can also choose to see the 12th-century Ardenne Abbey, initially the main point of French resistance and the site where 11 Canadian prisoners of war were executed.

However you choose to customize your private tour, you are sure to have a fascinating and interesting day at the D Day sites of Normandy.

I was disappointed with our guide. It was expensive since we had a private tour . I asked our guide about seeing the city where the paratroopers first landed , he said we couldn't do that right from the start. Then when I asked him about seeing some museums, again he said that would be a waste of our time. I know we couldn't do everything in a day , but he was average at best. To the point that i will not recommend Viator to others if this is the type of guides you have. He was interested in scheduling lunch. He was checking his phone throughout the day, which i feel was all personal business. I would recommend that he study up more on his subject before leading people especially for the high fee. As a final note he handed me his review and asked me to fill it out right in front of him. I rated him high marks since he was looking at me while I did it, I was at his mercy to get us back to our train station so I gave him a good review. Please disregard that review.

Adreen sp? was great! We talked to him about what was important to us and he planned the perfect day! We saw everything Saint-Mere-Eglise to The American Cemetery. He explain the events at each stop and walked us through the battles. We went back into bunkers and saw the German's strong holes. Adreen had a book full of photos to show us what the areas looked like at the time, the weapons that were used and how the Allies mapped out their plans. Adreen was very good with us, listened to our questions and gave us a wonderful day. We were able to see the horrible affects of war, the cost of life and why freedom comes at a cost. Thank you Adreen for the knowledge you gave us and for showing us areas that we would not have known to see much less to understand what happened without your help!

Gwen was a wonderful tour guide! His english was excellent and he explained, in detail, the many events leading up to as well as the D-Day invasion. My wife and I had a D-Day tour of Normandy in 2011 that we thought was excellent- but Gwen's tour was by far and away the best! He took us to a lovely hotel near Omaha beach for lunch and the food was exceptional! I would recommend Gwen and the Viator Normandy D-Day tour to all. Duane

Our tour was made so excellent thanks to the expertise and enthusiasm of our guide, Roman. From the moment he picked us up until he left us at the train station, he filled us with interesting background information and answered all of our questions knowledgeably. He made the sequence of events of the time logical and able to be understood and he gave a human perspective that made the day very moving and memorable. We would highly recommend this tour to all Americans visiting France.

Our guide, Philip, was excellent! He was extremely knowledgable and passionate about the history of the area. We did this as a family of five, and all of us had the same opinion. If you are in the area DO THIS TOUR!

I can't say enough good things about this tour. Our guide, Matt Legrande, was terrific. Informative, personable, high energy. A great guy. And as an area native whose grandparents lived through the war, he was able to share, not just the military perspective, but what its was like to be in the little villages that were just behind the beaches. I highly recommend Matt. And a private tour is far superior to doing the trip on your own. Without Matt, we would have just visited places and not experienced the stories behind the stories, the culture, and the context both before and after D-Day. Thanks Matt!

Our guide was excellent. He was very knowledgeable of the beaches, the battle plans, the statistics, the history of the area; recommended an excellent local museum for lunch; he told interesting anecdotal stories of the area that made the tour more personal. The only glitch in the trip was the closure of the American cemetery due to government shutdown in October! ....certainly not the tour guide's fault! I would highly recommend this private tour to friends.

Private Normandy tour with Matthew Cardinale was fantastic. We enjoyed every minute of it, he was very knowledgable, and had many personal stories, as his family has lived in Normandy for generations. For four people the cost was the same as a bus tour would have been, and the is no comparison. Wonderful eight hours.

Our tour guide Jonathan was fantastic! He was knowledgable, personable and really made this tour an unforgettable experience. We visited Omaha and Utah beaches, Point du Hoc, the American, Allied and German cemeteries, St. Mere Eglise, and several unexpected highlights. We will remember this once-in-a-lifetime experince for many years to come!

Excellent job by guide, Olivierre. Super organization taking us to the farthest point by Utah Beach then working back to Caen. He did a super job of monitoring our group of 7 to move at just the right speed through the various sites then concluding at the day at the American Cemetary at Omaha Beach. Our only suggestion was to get some type of electronic means to amplify his voice to those in the 3rd row of seats in the van. He has so much excellent knowledge, we all wanted to hear every word. We would highly recommend this tour especially those from countries whose soldiers fought to free France and died on the beaches and area of Normandy. Very emotional.
