Cage Diving with Great White Sharks from Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa

You may think you’re a fear-defying thrill lover, but can you handle the ultimate heart-pounding experience? Find out in Cape Town by cage diving with great white sharks. This full-day shark-diving experience takes you out into the open ocean off the shore of Gansbaai and puts you within touching distance of one of the world’s most feared predators. Before jumping in, you'll learn about the sharks from the onboard marine biologist and expert guides. Upgrade to include round-trip transport between your Cape Town hotel and Gansbaai. Breakfast and snacks are included.

Make your own way to the South African fishing village of Gansbaai, famous for being one of the best places in the world to see great white sharks. Alternatively, upgrade to begin with a pickup from your centrally located Cape Town hotel, and then relax in comfort during the approx. 2-hour journey.
On arrival in Gansbaai, your driver will drop you off to enjoy breakfast (or lunch if your tour start time is delayed due to bad weather) at the shark-diving center, known as the Great White House. During this time, you'll meet the expert guides who are leading you on your adventure and be fitted for your diving gear.
Board the specialized diving boat and enjoy an exhilarating 20-minute boat ride to Dyer Island. Your captain will stop in the optimal spot, and then the onboard team will tempt the great whites to the boat with bait so you’ll get a fantastic view of the sharks before heading into the shark-diving cage. The boat will stay anchored for approximately two hours, depending on the shark activity.

Your cage is attached to the boat and will stay just a few feet/meters below the water’s surface during your dive, which means it’s quick and easy to get out of the water as soon as you want. If you don't want to get into the cage at all, you’ll still have awesome views of the sharks as they swim around the boat. Keep your eyes peeled for more of the animals known as the ‘marine big five’: sharks, dolphins, whales, seals and penguins.

While you’re on board the boat, hydrate and refuel with the included drinks and snacks. Once back on shore, enjoy a light refreshment at the Great White House, where you can purchase a professional video of your once-in-a-lifetime experience, if you wish.

Your experience concludes inside the Great White House, or, if you've upgraded, with a drop-off at your hotel in Cape Town.

A lot of really good close encounter, chum the waters, cycled through cage for 5 to 10 min, multiple times

Unfortunately we didn't get to see any Great White Sharks, but we did see a bunch of Copper sharks, so it wasn't a bust. The crew was very friendly and informative about sharks and how the Great Whites were being hunted by the Killer Whales

Very early morning start. Visibility was less than a meter. Still, we got right up close with these fantastic creatures.

was picked up on time from hotel was about a 3 hr drive with stop on way, was met a office for shark tour the co was very friendly and looked after us very well, went out on our boat trip got to our shark destination but on way was told we might not see any great white because earlier in week the were orga's in bay so we would not see any great white's' but what we did see were 2 or 3 brown sharks, so out trip was,nt a waste, the boat crew were apsoloutly fantastick i would recommend this tour was worth the money even though we did,nt see any white sharks, we also did see plent of whales

An early rise was required to get to the place which is over 2 hours drive away. Our driver stopped on the way to and from at a bay where we could see whales swimming incredibly close to the shore. On the way back we also stopped at a penguin sanctuary. A mid-break home for a snack was also welcome. The trip itself is well organised. You can see the sharks well from the boat and so don't have to get into the water if you don't want to. The equipment was fine and snacks particularly after being in the sea were nice and welcome. There were a number of sharks seen but they were mainly Copperback sharks. We were lucky that just as we were about to leave we did see a Great White shark. You do have to be patient as the sharks are not reliable and there are periods with no activity. The naturalist on the boat gave a good explanation of what is known about the sharks and how it is researched which was interesting.

Do this one!!! Water is cold but really worth it to see the sharks this close. The time on the boat is also exceptional as you get to see the sharks from a different perspective. A seal showed up and gave us a show which was fun. The water is cold, but the wet suits are good insulation. Be careful eating the breakfast before hand - it could be cause for motion sickness. The soup and bread afterwards is wonderful. Staff and crew were the best.

Safe, professional and fun. We had a beautiful day on and under the water but most impressive was the staff’s dedication to and passion for their work. The experience did not feel exploitative , we saw sharks up close and came away with a better understanding.

Really great! We saw 6 different sharks and some of them more than once._br/_ The only downside was that we were picked up so early at the hotel.

Everything about this trip was amazing. It was conducted by Marine Dynamics and they were incredible. Everything was organized. Our driver was great. We were picked up from a local Cape Town hotel and he made our trip enjoyable. He even dropped us off at the wharf instead of our hotel per our request. We were greeted with a nice meal. The marine biologist Stephanie was very knowledgable. She answered all our questions and guided us so we had the best experience with the sharks possible. They have hot chocolate/tea and fresh towels ready when you get out of the water. We saw 14 great white sharks and they were clearly visible even from the boat deck. The boat was clean and had plenty of room - two stories so you can spread out and snap plenty of pics. We returned to heaters the water is quite cold, warm soup and great service. Dress warm even if it is a sunny day - it's windy away from the shore and the water is quite cold. Highly recommend this trip. It was incredible!

one word....AWESOME! you can NOT miss this tour. book it now!! this group does so much more than tours...they do research and conservation efforts so every dollar you spend helps further the study and conservation of these magnificent animals. we saw at least 8 sharks on our half day. be warned though....your hotel pickup time may be anywhere from 2am - 4am depending on where your hotel is at. the drive is 2.5 hours from cape town so bring something to keep you busy!

well, point one - take sea sickness pills or patches - even if you've never had a problem! I have been in water my whole life and never got ill - this was a shock! outside of that, awesome! you don't have to go underwater in the cage if you don't want to which was a plus as I thought I had to snorkel. better pics from on the boat vs in the cage for me - it was too fast in the water. we saw about 10 sharks that day with the last one being the biggest! long drive to get there from Camps Bay but well worth it!

Marine Dynamics is an excellent company to do this tour with - Viator is the third party that you book through. The Marine Dynamics team were very knowledgable and I felt completely safe during the entire trip. If you're going to do this, remember that there are days where the water will be very choppy and there will be a lot of movement around the boat. Make sure you can handle this! I had a wonderful time on this excursion and would definitely recommend it! Cheers

Amazing experience. Unfortunately it was a rough sea day as well as extremely cold - obviously nothing that could be done and not tour's fault! Neither my husband or I went into the water but it didn't limit the thrill of the experience for us. Fantastic to see such amazing creatures so close up. Worth noting that since it is a 2 hr drive from Cape Town, pick up in the city can start very early.4am for us and we were the second couple in the van. Would not stop me from doing it again though.

Fabulous experience. Two hour drive from Capetown, leaving very early in the morning, but gave us a good overview of the area traveling to the dive site. Hubby went into the cage and I took photos from deck. Would probably brave it and go in next time. Excellent staff, marine biologists on board. A great experience!

Viator is a facilitator website - the actual shark adventure was through a local operator. But it was really well organized, great communication between the two companies so Marine Dynamics had us squared away! Fun trip! Sharks are magnificent - and better than on whats presented on TV. Great equipment, marine biologist on board was a great asset, very professional staff. Everyone stayed in the water with the sharks far longer than I expected, AND WE SAW A TONE OF HUGE SHARKS.

Review by:   Mark K.,    August 2014 Review: 5 star rating: Highly Recommended
The trip was well organized and the Team does really their job, they do what they promise; nobody can walk away without seeing any shark. They are also prepared for situations; like if you are hungry, they have refreshments for you (eg. hot chock, sandwiches, chips and soft drinks), they treat you if you have sea-sick, etc. Full attention. The cruise to the deepwater (next to Dyer Island) is also scenic and if you like speed and adventure, sit into the front of the boat. Waiting for the different shark species in the Ocean is also a worthwhile and as a lot of the reviewers told; a lifetime experience._br/_ The soup was also more than all right at the end in Great White House.
