Qingcheng Mountain and Dujiangyan Irrigation System Day Trip from Chengdu

Chengdu, China

Enjoy a day away from the city and experience the grandeur of the Sichuan region’s scenic wonders on this full-day tour to Qingcheng Mountain and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Admire how temples and halls are seemingly carved into the thick forest of bamboo trees and caves at Qingcheng Mountain, where you’ll take a boat ride and a hike with your guide. Marvel at the construction of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, which was built in 256 BC and led to significant irrigation and agricultural development of the region.

Escape the hustle and bustle of Chengdu and enjoy the natural beauty the Sichuan province on this full-day trip. Your first stop is Qingcheng Mountain. In addition to its incredibly lush surroundings and secluded tranquility, the mountain boasts of number of well-preserved Taoist temples. Take a boat ride across the Yuecheng lake and follow your guide on a two-hour hike up the mountain, visiting various temples along the way such as the Jianfu temple, from the Tang Dynasty, or the Tianshi Cave, finished during the Qing Dynasty and where a famous Taoist master once taught. Take the same trail back down, or, for a more relaxing experience, take the cable car to the bottom of the mountain (own expense).

After lunch at a local restaurant (included), enjoy the drive to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. Built in 256 BC to provide irrigation and flood control to the region, the Dujiangyan is one of the greatest hydraulic engineering projects of the Qin Dynasty. See the fish mouth levee, named for its conical head resembling the mouth of a fish, and learn about the significant role it plays in the system.

The Dujiangyan area also boasts a beautiful landscape and many cultural relics and historical sites. Visit the Two Kings Temple and the Dragon-Taming Temple, and admire the style of traditional Chinese architecture and the intricate designs of ancient statues. Stroll around the gardens of Lidui Park and see how engineering masterpieces blend well with the park’s natural landscape.

Qingcheng Mountain and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System are two of the most incredible natural and industrial creations in China. Both sites also have interesting stories and legends, which your local guide will share with you.

This tour was outstanding. Most people go to Chengdu for the pandas, which of course are must-see, but this tour got us out of the city into the nearby mountain areas. What a nice change of pace to get out of the city and into the countryside and farmland._br/_ Lillian, our guide, spoke excellent English. She notified the hotel she was coming and picked us up in the lobby. Our driver was friendly, car was clean and comfortable with strong a/c. Lillian and driver provided so much information cultural and historical about the beautiful area._br/_ The irrigation system is awesome! Quite an engineering feat from over 2000 years ago. So strong the 2007 earthquake didn't damage it. You can walk or ride the tram. Cross the river on a suspension bridge to see the Dao temple and choose to climb the surrounding trails. _br/_ Lunch at a local restaurant was delicious and the beer was COLD!. _br/_ Qingcheng Mountain was lovely. We took a tram, then a short walk to a short boat ride to a gondola. Then started to climb. The climb was steep at times, mostly on stairs with several flat areas to stop and rest. There were several young Chinese women doing the trek in platform spike heels! Very few handrails but steps were never too narrow or close to drop-off to be uncomfortable or scary. To avoid the climb you could choose to be carried in a sling for a nominal fee. The view from the top was stunning!_br/_ Clean western toilets in both locations.

Very interesting tour and good tour guide. Had a nice lunch in between sites. Thought the extra payment for transport $4 and the tram fare $13 could have been built into the tour fee.

The trip was fantastic, started with a small hickup caused by very late booking, but even that was sorted out very quickly. Great guide and amazing place to see.
