Cozumel Shore Excursion: Jeep and Snorkel Adventure

Cozumel, Mexico

Maximize your Cozumel shore excursion time when you jump on a Jeep-and-snorkel combination tour! You'll drive through town and around the island, visit an ancient Mayan ruin, then head to the beach to relax and snorkel in Cozumel's tropical waters.

Your Cozumel shore excursion begins when you board your Jeep Wrangler or Jeep Patriot, taking off on an exciting drive around town for insights into local life. The scenic route provides breathtaking views of tropical Cozumel and you'll keep in contact with your tour guide via a state-of-the-art radio system installed in every Jeep.

From Cozumel, you’ll follow a long sandy road to the Punta Sur State Refuge ecological reserve. Here you'll visit El Caracol, an ancient Mayan ruin once used as a weather alarm. At Columbia Lagoon, watch saltwater crocodiles basking in the sun in their natural environment. Then, explore the observation tower which overlooks the lagoon before heading over to the beach to enjoy the year-round crystal-clear waters.

The second feature of your Cozumel shore excursion takes place in a bay protected from sea currents; its calm, shallow waters make it the ideal place for snorkeling. You might see turtles, lobsters and tropical fish on your guided snorkeling tour. While you snorkel, your guide will always be nearby to help you out and answer any questions you may have. If you want to give snorkeling a miss, feel free to simply relax under the shade of your beach umbrella.

Jumping back into the Jeeps, you'll head over to the Navigation Museum inside the Punta Celarain lighthouse, with the option to climb to the top. Your shore excursion concludes with a drive over to a beach resort to enjoy a delicious Mexican lunch of fajitas, rice, beans, chips, real tortillas and Mexican salsa. Beach chairs, a freshwater swimming pool, showers and towels are included in the price.

Worry-free Shore Excursion:

We will ensure your excursion ends with ample time for you to return to Cozumel for your ship's departure. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. See our terms and conditions for full details.

This was a good tour. The lunch provided was good quality. Bring cash for lunch add-ons like alcoholic beverages and guacamole._br/_ Snorkeling wasn't very good. The beach itself was excellent for swimming, and there was fish to see, just not many varieties because the reef was very very small. The beach however was very large with beautiful water and excellent for swimming. Beach was not crowded at all. We loved the beach and wished we could have stayed there all day. The facilities at the beach were great. Food, bar and bathrooms were excellent._br/_ The Jeep we had was old, but still very fun to drive. The tour guides do not give you a whole lot of information before putting you in either a Jeep or a dune buggy. For the Jeep, you need to have someone in your group that can drive a manual transmission.

The only problem was that the water was too rough to snorkel that day and that's what we were really looking forward to but that's no fault of anyone's. The tour guides were incredible, the rain was the only drawback! Loved it!

Really not great. They showed up and then let us know you have to drive. I have no interest in driving in Mexico. Fortunate that others were willing. The stops were a bit boring. Jungle? Not any. Beach was pretty. The stop at the tequila place was boring. The Aztec ruin was a tiny place about the size of a large teepee.

The places we visited were not too bad, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth as to whether I'll ever use a 3rd party again for an excursion. First, the Jeeps had many issues. There were only two Jeeps used in our tour. Our Jeep ran pretty well, even though speedometer didn't work. The Jeep behind us had to be swapped a few times before we started the tour for reasons I'm not sure of. But that was not what made a poor tour for me. The tour guides car broke down on way back to starting location. The food for the meal was VERY poorly cooked and wasn't very good. The soda cost us a few bucks. Wasn't expecting that as I thought it was included in meal. It was never mentioned until after we were done drinking them. The snorkeling was from shore...and was only done in a sandy, sea grass area. I was VERY disappointed in this tour. I've been on a few excursions and this was easily the worst one I had been on.

I loved Cozumel, the beach was great, but the snorkeling was subpar. It was not a reef. Not much to see underwater. Too much time spend traveling. Did not have a lot of time anywhere. Everything else was good

We had a great guide and a wonderful lunch at a spot the locals frequented.

Overall this was a very boring excursion. The highlight of the trip was lunch, which was good. We visited Punta Sur which consisted of a lighthouse and some local vendors, then proceeded to the snorkeling location. The snorkeling was lackluster, the reef was pretty far out and the visibility was poor.

The tour guide seemed to have bothered by having to give the tour - as if he was called in on his day off. The snorkeling was fine. The jeep tour was boring - sounds good as a title but it was boring.

My daughter and I went on this excursion and really enjoyed ourselves. Our guide Robert was knowledgeable about the area plus the scenery and route were beautiful! The weather earlier in the week prevented us from going snorkeling but that was no fault of the theirs. Our ship had to change port days and times but again they were able to accommodate us. The only problem I had was the seat belts didn't all work in the jeep.

Cozumel is pretty big so it and #39;s ideal to visit it with a guided tour, especially the punta sur park, and this jeep tour was pretty fun! Our guide Daniel was competent and funny! The tour was very interesting, the scenaries beautiful and snorkling very fun! The tour was a bit intense, but worth it.

Everything on this tour was great with the exception of the condition of the Jeeps. We were traveling with four adults, and their Jeeps only had 2-doors, which made getting in and out rather challenging for the backseat passengers. The Jeeps are all very old and not well cared for. We saw several other Jeep tours along the way, and many of the other companies offered a 4-door Jeep that looked much safer than ours.

Our group of 8 truly enjoyed this jam-packed, amazing excursion. Our only suggestion is to be sure to allow for the difference between cruise ship time and local Cozumel time when booking. We ended up racing to the ship at the end of the day with minutes to spare. Had we accounted for the difference in local vs. ship time, we would have selected the earlier offered excursion time slot to allow enough time to shop the local merchants before re-boarding....without the need to sprint to the ship. BTW: The beach lunch was exceptional!

Great tour! A beautiful drive to the park to see the lighthouse. We saw crocodiles, coati mundi and Mayan ruins. Lunch and snorkeling at a beautiful beach followed by stop to see how tequila is made, complete with plenty of samples. We got back to the docks in time for plenty of shopping before boarding our ship. We definitely recommend this one!

We really enjoyed the excursion. Ruben was awesome, taking very good care of us. One concern watch ship time and country time. Always go by ship time. there was a difference of one hour and we had to make adjustments on the excursion because of this so we could be back in time to get on the ship before leaving.

This is a great way to see the island! Absolutely loved the jeep tour - although our jeep kept have clutch problems, the guide was able to fix the issue quickly. The snorkeling was good but we didn't see a great deal. It was very tiring as the undercurrent was a little rough on the day we went. The tour finished with a tour of a tequila facility. What a fantastic way to end the day. Be prepared to have some of the best tequila you have ever tasted!

This was an incredible way to see Cozumel. I have been many times over the past 25 years and this by far was the most memorable. Phillipe was our tour guide and he did a phenomenal job. We had four teenagers with us and they couldn't stop talking about what a great day we had had. Punta Sur was breathtaking. The snorkeling was perfect. Lunch at the end of the day was at a stunning beachside restaurant and was ready for us upon arrival as Phillipe called it in. The jeeps were a lot of fun and in great condition. 5 STARS!!!

So much better and less expensive than any excursion the cruise ship offers. It was completely customized to us. Went out to a great reef for snorkeling and it was amazing. Had a great lunch. Stopped for a tequila tasting. This is the way to go. Only reservation is that you have to be able to drive a stick shift.

The snorkeling was great and we went on for a while. The clouds came in and it made it hard to see for a bit but once the sun returned you could see beautiful fish. The jeep did have some issues our hood popped up while we were driving, but I loved the ride. Punta Sur is a pretty park and is huge, there was a tequila tasting as well when you go to the lighthouse. The lunch we delicious and the guacamole was fresh.

Great Family Getaway!!! Our guide, Felipe, was awesome! He met us at the hotel, was cordial, polite, accommodating and very knowledgeable about the history of the island. Convenient access to the jeep. We saw most of the island, went all through the preserve, which is approximately half the island. Beautiful views of the ocean all along the way. We saw a wild crocodile. We toured the lighthouse. We went to a delightful beach destination with hammocks, drinks, etc. Felipe hooked us up with quality snorkeling gear, and took us out to a reef just off shore. Saw beautiful fish, crabs, sting rays, etc. Felipe pulled our 8 year-old on a tether so the parents got to enjoy the snorkeling too, rather than just corralling the little one. Showered up, changed clothes and drove down the way to another beautiful beach location for an authentic Mexican dinner next to the beach...very scenic with the clear water and gentle waves breaking near the beach. Several shopping opportunities along the way. We even had a little rain on the way back, but we were all just laughing. It made it more fun and memorable. The drive back through the island goes through the heart of the city so you see the non-touristy areas too. Was worth the money. Felipe was a great guide. Highly recommended. Price was much cheaper than the cruise ship version.

This experience was amazing. We were able to travel through most of the island and talk to our guide who was a local. The only thing I didn't like was the price for the tequila on the tequila tour. When I got back at home I noticed it was also on sale online. Other than that, everything was awesome.

We enjoyed our trip very much. Our guide was interesting and pleasant to be with. However, there were a couple of things that were disappointing. We thought that we would be enjoying snorkeling, but due to the weather we were not able to do that. I believe that this must happen often because of the wind. I think it should be noted in the ad that there is chance that the snorkeling will not happen.

It was better than I expected! I loved the keep toir and the snorkeling and the surprise stop to the lighthouse. Miguel was the best! The only downside was that we didnt know their were no automatic transmissions. Thankfully one of us in oir groip could drive a stick so we had to be in one jeep

This is a must if you are visiting Cozumel. Not only are the guides super friendly and make the trip fun, but u truly get a taste of what the island has to offer. On this tour, you drive a jeep while following your guide around the island. It's the best way to see the island w/o the sun roasting u

All the other jeeps in the caravan had families or groups and after taking a look at my husband and myself, Moses decided to place us in the jeep with Phillipe, herding the others from the rear. It turned out perfectly for us, since I could drive the stick shift but didn't know how to put it into 4-wheel drive. I was worried about mud, as it had rained during the first part of the tour, but we never had to go into 4-wheel drive at all.

This trip was disappointing to the 2 of our party who participated (one had a neck injury and couldn't go). It was about 1/2 hr. late leaving. Then one of the jeeps ran out of gas and we all waited around to get it going again. We were told the water was too rough -- so no snorkeling allowed. (too bad since the beaches around the ship dock were smooth) Several stops for drinking and no food. Didn't stop for lunch until back near the start -- by then it was about 4 pm and we had to get back to the ship so couldn't eat. So No snorkeling and No lunch. Just the opportunity to buy booze. Poorly coordinated.

The trip to the tequila factory was an unnecessary stop. If you cannot drive a standard car you MUST request automatic in advance. We were not told this and, as a result, part of out group had to drive with the guide. You can rent your own jeep and do this tour on your own. If you are on a NCL cruise, this is NOT the trip for you because the departure point requires a cab ride that is an additional cost. There were many more convenient tours leaving from the NCL port

the overall tour was good and the negative items were more of Viator's fault and not the actual tour companies fault, (All pro sports). When we booked we were given 3 options as to time of day for our tour. We choose 10:30 a.m not realizing this tour was as long as it was. Our ship all aboard time was 4:30 pm. So we missed the included meal as it was cutting it too close if we'd also gotten the meal. As the booking company, Viator, at the very least, should assure we have enough time to utilize the entire tour. Also the roads were extremely poor, full of deep pot holes, leaving us with sore backs. Again overall tour was good but should see what can be done about the paths or roads in the park.

Review by:   Heidi L,    January 2014 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
The roads in the park were terrible--way too many pot holes. Your tour guides were o.k. The snorkel part of the tour was much better. The man that took us out to snorkel was good. However, the man in the kiosk where you get the snorkels and mask was rude. Overall, we enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to our friends.

This excursion was definitely worth doing. The tour through Cozumel was pleasant and informative. Alberto, our tour guide, was outstanding to say the least. We saw the lighthouse, learned about the Mayan ruin, toured the wild life preserve, snorkeled, had lunch but did not have enough time for the tequila tour. However, I would not recommend it for a family with toddlers. Some of the roads are rugged and a family with toddlers sometimes can slow the pace down or may require to eat sooner than the scheduled time, which can cause you to miss a sight.

This is an okay tour if it's your first time in Cozumel. I have been to Cozumel many times before, did this tour cause I thought it would be something different. It was good, but I wasn't blown away by it. Jeeps were very old. Lots and lots and lots of driving around. First stop was Punta del Sur which was a very nice park. Didn't see the crocodile. Was probably off tanning somewhere. Water was way too cold for snorkeling. Very nice beach area. Then off to the tequila tasting, which was a complete waste of time. All they do is try an sell you tequila. Then around 3:30 (local time) they bring you back to the hotel where they pick you and they include a lunch. Wish the lunch would have been allot earlier. After driving around all day, all I wanted to do was get back to the ship. On the plus side the meeting point is easily located next to the Royal Caribbean Pier. The Carnival pier is a little bit further.
