Katherine Day Tour from Darwin including Katherine Gorge Cruise

Darwin, Australia

A spectacular Katherine Gorge day tour is one of the many unforgettable experiences available to you in the Top End in Australia's Northern Territory. Traveling from Darwin to Katherine Gorge, you will journey to Nitmiluk National Park where you will view ancient Aboriginal rock art on the canyon walls, the abundant flora and fauna of the region and maybe even see a few crocodiles! Enjoy a cruise -- a highlight of Katherine Gorge tours -- and take a refreshing swim at the crocodile-free Edith Falls, before returning to Darwin.

Your full-day Top End tour from Darwin to Katherine Gorge will see you first stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the resting place for many World War II soldiers.

Continue to Edith Falls where there's time for a refreshing swim in the waterhole (conditions permitting).

After lunch, you will have a two-hour guided cruise between the sheer sandstone cliffs of Katherine Gorge, situated in the Nitmiluk National Park. As you glide along the tranquil waters on your Katherine Gorge cruise, enjoy commentary from your guide detailing the area's plant and wildlife and explaining the Aboriginal rock art, which adorns the walls of the gorge. Keep an eye out for crocodiles, turtles and the splendid array of birdlife.

Enjoy a quick tour of Katherine, the hub of the region's cattle and farming industries before traveling via Pine Creek, a historic gold mining town. Stop at Adelaide Creek for dinner (own expense) before returning to Darwin where your Katherine day tour concludes.

Please note: Edith Falls is subject to weather conditions

Excellent tour. Very long day though and we were only able to do half the Gorge due to the high water levels.

Review by:   Ann P,    March 2018 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Disappointed with this trip as we'd been looking forward to it. Lack of information regarding swimming, closure of one of the gorges, access to the rock art etc left us feeling somewhat underwhelmed. We understand that this was caused by nature, but it would have been nice to have been informed prior to the trip. Add to that being told we only had 30 minutes to purchase and eat or dinner on the way home compounded our disappointment. Diver/guide Michael was friendly but didn't always seem to be on top of the information about the areas we passed through. Very long day and not sure if it was worth it.

Not worth the money, long driving, you see 3 things in that day. Gorge was Very disappointing, no birds, no crocodiles, a boatride with a walk to the second boat because of the level of the water. Very nice driver. Other trips are much nicer.

My wife and I used the reviews section to make our choice and were not disappointed. As previous travellers stated it was indeed a very long day. Our driver Micheal was a very obliging driver, guide and carer with a good sense of humour. We were treated to greenery due to recent rainfalls which he stated was highly unusual for this time of year. When we arrived at Katherine Gorge for our boat trip were not expecting to see so many bats. The only negative for any older travellers who do not or are not able to walk so far is the distance between the two boat trips. Stage 1 travels down the river and there is a considerable walk to stage 2 of the river journey which is the the actual destination. The walk is definintely worth the effort. Water is available but the need to carry and drink water was repeatedly stressed. Very enjoyable and satisfying trip and well worth the money.

A very long day but most enjoyable. Comfortable air condit coach. Cruise on gorge beautiful even though it was 40 degrees. You actually go on a boat get off and short walk to another boat. Scenery lovely. On way back stopped at Emerald springs for dinner. Yummo..i had Barramundi burger.. beautifully cooked. Owner of place a very happy and funny man. Back to Darwin about 9pm. Well worth the trip.

Beautiful, stunning well worth the long day of travel and sightseeing we left the hotel about 06:30, arrived back at 21:30, definitely worth the cost. The guide Geoff was very professional and very informative, which contributed in making the trip interesting, very helpful and he also made sure that all of the tourists kept hydrated. Excellent time management, well organised tour. Boat trip through two stunning gorges was amazing. Nothing fazed him and took everything in his stride. He also had a number of humorous anecdotes to make the long coach trip not seem so arduous.

Worth doing. A very long day but the distances dictate this. Comfortable travel with an interesting guide. The Katherine gorge cruise was awesome. Don't forget the camera.

A must see ,awesome, TV doesn't do the Gorge justice.. a very long day , tour guide Micheal a treasure. Road house where you had breakfast and dinner at your own cost left a lot to be desired......food excellent, service very slow.

It is a long day trip. Meet at 6:30am and back to hotel around 8:30pm. We take a long ride to different place, such as edith falls and katherine george. Katherine george is beautiful with different kind of rocks, the cruise is interesting but the weather is too hot, so remember to bring more water. The restaurant for morning tea and dinner is in the same place. Overall, i think the travel takes too much time in transport and it may not worth for those who may also travel to Ayers rock in their trip.

Great experience but a very long day. I would recommend having more time for swimming and for the lunch break to allow time to eat. Not mentioned but you will require money for dinner on the way home.

Tour started late then we played catch up all day with time reduced at each place. Despite a phone call to the company the day before, information re food allergy was not passed on and buffet lunch had nothing left for the last 10 people in the line. No lunch! Tour guide Ray started off in a friendly manner but did not respond well to problems. Had to buy own morning tea and then Dinner...this wasn't in the fine print. Confusion over food allergy again with information not passed on with order...No dinner! We had been on a tour in Alice Springs three days before and were treated like kings and fed all day...it was way longer but we paid less for the experience. Katherine Gorge was well worth a visit but I was disappointed with the service.

Katherine Day Tour was amazing. The cruise to see Katherine Gorge was breathtaking and the 3 hour coach bus ride was worth it. The weather was perfect and our guide was great. The tour included a buffet lunch which was great, and dinner was at our expense which was at a lovely cafe on the way back to Darwin. The only complaint was that we didn't all get the same amount of time to eat our meals for dinner. The cafe needed more staff to cope with a bus load of people.

If you only have one day like we did, this tour was worth every minute. Warren our guide for the day was fabulous. Lots of information passed on to us from his time in the top end. We were lucky with the weather. We knew full well that we could have been drenched all day from the time of year we went but were prepared for that. The rivers were rising but it only rained at one of our stops. During our boat ride along the Katherine Gorge we were lucky enough to take an amazing swim at the first waterfall. Don't miss the opportunity to do this so go prepared with your bathers or a spare set of clothes. You won't go hungry during the day. Great morning tea especially the homemade scones and then again dinner at Emerald Springs all at own expense. Lunch was provided at Katherine Gorge information centre. A very disappointing lunch - the buffet needs labels on food so people know what they are eating. If the lunch was more appetising this tour would have rated 5 star as we enjoyed every other part of the day. Thanks for a great day Warren. Paul and Alanna

Our day commenced with great anticipation, and we we're not disappointed._br/_ The bus journey was comfortable and cool, the stops were well timed, the swim fantastic and lunch was delightful._br/_ The Katherine Gorge boat tour was both exhilarating and humbling by its sheer scale._br/_ Chris, our guide provided an interesting and informative commentary delivered with good humour._br/_ I would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Northern Territory

Long day!! On time for pick up at Hotel, taken to bus terminal and changed buses. Bus driver very informative and helpful. Very full day, limited time at places, but enough to do what you wanted. Food stops really good and ready for us when we arrived. Had a great day, glad we planned a quiet day the next day!! Would recommend this tour.

Loved the Katherine Gorge, and bus driver was very informative but i would not do this tour again, First of all bus was late and we got tranfered to another coach but because first coach was late we were last onboard this mean't that for the whole trip my husband and i did not get to sit with each other and we were on that coach from 6.35am-9.45pm, for us personally there was too many people we prefer smaller group we found we had to line up for everything Toilet, food, drinks felt that things were just to rushed did not really get enough time at most stops, we also thought that morning tea was included but it was only lunch that was included we knew we had to pay for dinner and we were fine with that, we thought that it was not good value for money as we paid 500 to only be together when off the coach which most of that time was taken up waiting in queues, we would have preferred to have hired a car and do are own thing

We had a great day out in Katherine and the surrounds. From pick up at the hotel, to drop off in the evening, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It's a long day but well worth it, from the amazing cruise through the Katherine Gorges, to the well timed stops for a break and great food. We are looking at next year's tours on our return trip to Darwin.

A long way for a day trip. However well worth it for the gorge boat trip, the delicious freshly baked scones at our breakfast stop and dinner at the same place on way back (Emerald Springs Roadhouse). Pick-up 6.15 but didn and #39;t arrive until 6.45-our hotel only around corner. Maybe a shuttle bus needed.

Great day, although be prepared for a long one. The dip in Edith Falls was lovely, especially as my mother's name was Edith! The various stops along the way all enjoyable and came at the right time. The gorge is awe inspiring. Very very glad we did it.

The pickup from our hotel was smooth and timely on a good comfortable bus with really good quality Roadhouse stop on the way, which was great as it was a long day. The best part of the trip was the cruise on Katherine Gorge with the aboriginal guide, hearing about his own personal culture and heritage was a great pleasure.
