Litchfield National Park Day Tour from Darwin

Darwin, Australia

Escape from the bustle of city life and spend a full day exploring the waterfalls, rainforest and rock formations in beautiful Litchfield National Park. Located an easy 2-hour drive from Darwin, Litchfield National Park encircles the Tabletop Range, known for spectacular waterfalls and swimming holes, plus sculptural cliffs, monsoon forest and historic sites. Your guide takes you to stunning waterfalls, rock pools where you can swim, and a walking path in the forest where you learn about the plants and wildlife. Soak in the natural beauty and return refreshed.

After morning pickup from your Darwin hotel, travel by air-conditioned coach about 60 miles (100km) southwest to Litchfield National Park, taking in the scenery along the way. As you near the park, note the numerous waterfalls that cascade from a spectacular sandstone plateau called the Tabletop Range.

Your first stop is to see the magnetic and cathedral termite mounds that rise like pillars from the ground. Your guide will explain the different types of termites and point out which termite mounds are which.

Next stop is to Florence Falls where you come to a 135-step stairway that descends to the fantastic natural swimming hole surrounded by
monsoon forest. After spending some time swimming and taking in the beauty of Florence Falls. At midday, stop for a cold buffet lunch at the Litchfield Cafe and try some of their world-famous cheesecake.

After lunch return to your coach for a short drive to Wangi Falls. The falls flow year-round, pouring into a giant swimming hole flanked by rainforest. In the drier months, the pools are great for a swim. During the wet season, the currents can be too strong for safe swimming.

In the late afternoon continue to Tolmer Falls for great views of this stunning waterfall that cascades into a deep rock pool.

Next your tour will head out of Litchfiled National Park and back to Darwin. On the drive home your guide will talk about the traditional owners of this land, who are the Wagait Aboriginal people, many of whom live in the area.

Great tour. Went to Florence Falls, Tolmer Falls, Wangi Falls and the termite mounds. Our driver, Dale, was very informative and was very considerate of all passengers. One of the highlights was having a swim at Florence Falls pool. Most refreshing. I would recommend taking this tour!!

Great day out with Deb who was an excellent guide and kept us all amused and interested on our journey. A very good lunch provided and after quite a long wet season the waterfalls were spectacular.

We enjoyed the trip out to the natural environment around Darwin, and especially the friendly, highly informative commentary from Jeff our tour guide and driver. We learned quite a lot, and it was worth the extremely uncomfortable heat and sweatiness to see the lovely waterfalls and water holes. Those who have some mobility issues should be aware that the Florence Falls swim is only accessible via about 160 steps, but there is a good viewing platform right at the top, so going down the stairs is not essential for seeing, only for swimming. We like the view at Wongi Falls where we were right down at pool level with no stairs involved.....but no swimming either given the local croc population!

Simon was not only a great guide but also was very careful with people's health as it was very hot and humid. He had a large supply of cold water and constantly encouraged people to stay hydrated. Florence fall plunge pool was closed but Wangi falls pool was amazing. With one closed it would have been nice to have skipped it and spend more time at the other. Termite mounds were very interesting.

We enjoyed this tour as our guide was quite chatty, funny and knowledgeable. One of the designated swimming holes were closed due to renovations but otherwise a great day out. The meal was delightful, particularly the home made dessert!

Interesting area, but a long way to go to see a few waterfalls and some termite nests. Our view may have been coloured by the 12 days we just spent travelling through Arnhem Land, i.e. we're over travelling in a bus but in reality, the park isn't that impressive. Lenny our driver/guide was very good

A good trip out of Darwin. Not too much driving, good commentary ...very informative. Regular stops on the way. Main stops at swimming holes and walking trails were well worth it. The termite mounds were amazing. Very glad we did this trip.

This tour was fantastic! Relaxed and friendly. Great commentary! plenty of time at each of the waterholes. They were most helpful even when I messed up my booking! I would go on this again the next time I get to Darwin.

Not what I expected. The guide/driver acted almost solely as driver and gave very little information during the drive and at the sites. Left about half hour late and delays with pick up meant less time at sites.

Great trip! We started our trip with a visit to the Florence Falls, that place is beyond gorgeous!! You can take pics from the viewing point and you get the opportunity to take a swim. Lunch was delicious en learning about the termite mounds was interesting. We finished our trip with a visit to the Wangi Falls, another stunning place. All in all, I had a great day :

This day was great. Had everything, discovery, swimming, good lunch comfortable coach. This is a must do tour. Again I would do this all over again on a self drive so as to spend more time in each location, it was great.

This tour was great! The driver Michael from AAT had so many stories to tell on almost every area we went through. Kept us all entertained and educated us at the same time. The Florence Falls was a highlight. Beautiful swimming hole and walk through the forest. Well worth doing

Great driver/guide who kept us informed and entertained throughout the day. The waterfalls were wonderful, lunch was good and there were sufficient but not excessive comfort stops. We were picked up on time and returned home as expected. Recommended tour

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour, unfortunately my husband suffered from the heat_br/_ and was quite ill. We had two amazing staff on the tour by the names of Marietta_br/_ and Leonard who looked after my husband and ensured no lasting ill effects._br/_ We went into the office in Darwin and also recommended them to the staff.

Great tour guide. Beautiful waterfalls and time to swim and enjoy them . Good lunch, but with paying nearly 180 the optional 5/piece cheesecake could have been included

The tour guide himself was new to the job so lacked a bit of knowledge. However the day itself was very enjoyable despite the humidity on the day. Lunch was very a poor cold buffet

John, our guide/driver, did everything he was meant to do I think but there was only token enthusiasm. There was no attempt to engage his passengers. The air conditioning was inadequate - it was a very hot day - and it was hard to hear right at the back. My husband's question about prevalence of snakes in the area and was brushed off. Lunch was very ordinary. I'm not going to say anymore - I've already submitted a review and it hasn't appeared.

This tour included a swim in three waterholes and waterfalls which were free of crocodiles but crystal clear and cool. The waterfalls flow all year round and are surrounded by large red cliffs. We also saw huge termite mounds on the tour. The tour was a great introduction to the outback.

Loved this trip! A full day without being too long. Our tour guide was amazing and kept us laughing all day. i was surprised to find out she was originally a Sydney gal - she was so relaxed, at ease and knowledgable I thought she was Darwin born and bred! The tour had regular breaks and also enough down time to enjoy the stops. Loved the opportunities to swim which were amazing in rock pools and waterfalls. Great tour and great day spent. Don't miss this one!

This was a great day's adventure and well worth the money. Phil, our driver/guide, was informative and entertaining without being intrusive, and he took us to some wonderful waterfalls and lookouts for just the right amount of time. The lunch was fairly standard but overall, we would recommend the tour as a terrific way to get to all the good places without having to find them yourself. Remember to bring your bathers, a towel and sunscreen!

Litchfield was better than Katherine I thought, but what a hot day. Should have bought the cozzies. The driver was well informed regarding the area.

Lunch was most disappointing and to have to pay for desert and drinks, for the money we paid, most disappointing._br/_ The bus was comfortable, the scenery and Litchfield made everything worthwhile.

Review by:   Coralie T,    August 2015 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
At 152pp don't think good value. Other than driving there/back and to different sites, fees/meal only costs which had to be replenished before everyone had fair share - some people took too much at beginning of queue. Driver pleasant, but Management needs to be aware - when coach arrived at our pickup, driver didn't get out of coach to greet, when picking up other passengers drove off off before they were seated almost causing a fall, gave passengers a briefing of day before picking up last passengers, then a mixup of pickup location between company/passengers. Wouldn't recommend, tell other prospective clients to check other carriers.

It was lovely to see the waterfalls. The bus was late by 30 mins but the driver was safe and a great host with appropriate humour and tolerance. The waterholes were busy and therefore unable to access but the walks surrounding the falls were good.

The tour was great. The driver provided excellent customer service and had a great knowledge of Darwin and Litchfield. The only negative was confusion around the pick up hotel. The options included the 'airport inn' however Darwin has an airport resort, airport motel and airport hotel.
