Montenegro Day Trip from Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Visit Montenegro on a day trip from Dubrovnik, and discover the delights of the tiny country that’s said to be one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. With a knowledgeable guide, travel around the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Bay of Kotor, through Cetinje, and then enjoy free time to explore the scenic town of Kotor and Budva on your own and at your own pace. On the way back, cross the Bay of Kotor by ferry to capture some of the region’s postcard-perfect views.

Start your day at Gruz Port, or with a pickup from your Dubrovnik hotel, and then chat with your guide on the way out of the city, toward Montenegro. The sights that dot the eastward route are just as captivating as the country’s eventful history. So, sit back, enjoy the views and learn about Montenegro's past and present from your guide.

Your first standout sight is the Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage–listed landmark and one of Europe’s southernmost fjords. Look out over the butterfly-shaped bay from the comfort of your coach, and soak up the views of the water, flanked romantically by mountains, hills and a number of pretty settlements, too.

Travel through Risan, one of the oldest towns on the bay, and hear how Queen Teuta of the Illyrian dynasty retreated here during the Roman invasion. From Risan, continue to beautiful Kotor, a UNESCO-listed town and your first stop of the day. Hop out of your coach, and enjoy free time to explore tucked-away piazzas, see the sights and perhaps find a cafe for lunch. Don’t miss the must-see Cathedral of St Tryphon or the handsome city walls. All entrance fees and food throughout the day are at your own expense.

After exploring Kotor, travel along the steep slopes to Cetinje, and enjoy a brief stop along the way in the village of Njeguši. Pass through Cetinje, the one-time seat of Montenegrin rulers, and then stop in the town of Budva, known for its charming Old Town and beaches. Look out over Aman Sveto Stefan, an exclusive island resort, as you enter the town, and then make the most of more free time in Buva itself. Admire glitzy yachts in the marina, or relax on one of the sandy beaches. How you use your time is up to you.

In the late afternoon, meet your guide for a ferry ride back across the Bay of Kotor. Then, finally, return to your coach for a drop-off at Gruz Port or your Dubrovnik hotel in the evening.

This was a great tour - my friend and I had a lovely time. Our tour guide (whose name escapes me) was very knowledgeable, and gave great background to each town while we were driving to it, so that we could maximize our time in each. Our only complaint was that it was a VERY warm day, and the bus AC did not seem to be working well, meaning the trip back to Dubrovnik that evening was very warm, to the point of being uncomfortable.

Great tour! Kinda packs a lot into a single day. As long as youre ok with that you will enjoy.

The tour from Dubrovnik to Montenegro Kotor and Budva was disappointing for two reasons. First, The tour was given in two languages. That in itself is NOT a problem. Where it became a problem is when the English group outnumbering the second group 2:1 received less than half the guides information! When I broached the subject with the tour guide, her response was that she could not speak two languages at once. However, offering the English tour guests less than half the explaination the others received AND engaging in personal conversations with two of the other language group was off-setting. Secondly, Budva as a second destination to Kotor as part of the trip should be eliminated. More time should be spent in Kotor. Thats where the history, the beauty and interests lie.

Loved this tour and our guide. She was funny and energetic. Crossing the border can be rather time consuming, so be prepared to sit at the border between 30 minutes to an hour and a half. Kotor is beautiful! One thing that is different than the online description is that we didn't drive up the mountain for a beautiful view of Kotor. That road is under construction and has been closed to traffic for a long time. Instead, you get extra time in Budva. Budva is less enjoyable than Kotor. My recommendation: eat a late lunch in Budva that way you can maximize your time in Kotor!

Beautiful but 13 hour tour and day was more riding on a bus with no breaks than sights. The drive up mountains were amazing. Just toooooooooo long.

This was the first of our tours on this trip and it did not disappoint. Our time to get through the border was not too long but I gather it can be worse mid-season so we had a quite a lot of free time at Kotor. Our guide was Montenegrin and very informative about the independence of Montenegro and the customs and language of the people and their relationships to the countries around them. Once we left Kotor we were taken to a high spot where we could photograph Kotor and the surrounding area and then onto Budva which is very much a seaside resort town. We were advised where we could get a good meal and after seeing the old town which is quite small we had something to eat before heading back. It was a good day which we thoroughly enjoyed

It was great as the tour guide was friendly and worked hard to get everyone happy. He was using English and French to explain to us. Montenegro was nice!

A long day but well worth it. Montenegro was beautiful and so different to the scenery around Dubrovnik. Cator is an amazing city with so many winding streets to explore and the stunning mountain backdrop. Budva was less interesting, though what remains of the old town is lovely. Great thanks to our guide who was very knowledgeable yet gave us lots of freedom to explore on our own. Recommended!

We probably expected too much. Bay of Kotor is spectacular. The town is okay! We climbed uptill the fortress overlooking the old town. The trek was amazing! We loved Budva more somehow. It is better kept._br/_ Evana was a gracious, sweet, kind and knowledgeable guide. Would help if they would help us with a guide at kotor.

This was really a road trip through beautiful landscapes rather than just a trip to Montenegro. Kotor lived up to it's reputation and Budva was quaint at it's heart if not entirely dwarfed by the new town.

Quality of stops poor. We could have used the restaurants on the walk through a local village. So we have been to Montenegro, an extra day in Dubrovnic would be better value.

Our guide Maria was caring, kind and helpful. She took care of us especially when we left and entered the boarders._br/_ Montenegro was stunning and we had enough time to hang around the Old Town. It was a great tour and could experience something special other than in Croatia.

Well organised, interesting and fantastic landscapes. The bus needs about one hour to get through the customs both ways, so take a book with you!

Enjoyed our extremely long day- border crossings were slow both directions and Kotor was super crowded. Visited about 5 years ago and was surprised at the number of tours in town. Really preferred Budva and wished the times allowed had been opposite: more time in Budva than Kotor but understand people wanted to hike to the fortress in Kotor. Budva old town was lovely with many great looking restaurants and shops but our time was pretty limited.Gorgeous drive along the coast and would love to have stopped in one of the seaside villages. Would recommend going in a smaller group rather than bus to possibly shorten border wait.

The tour was good. The stops were interesting and showed us Montenegro. We were picked up close to our accommodation We were able to communicate easily with the tour operator to arrange pick up points. Unfortunately the guide on the tour was often inappropriate with her comments about other people, drivers, customs officers etc. We only had good experiences with the guides on every other trip we took through Viator.

The tour was good, the views amazing and the guide very knowledgeable. However, they made a mistake with my pick up point, as they changed my pick up venue without communicating the bus who would pick me up and they were waiting for me at the wrong venue! Bring a book or anything to distract yourself for the nearly two hour wait at the border on the way back from Montenegro. This has nothing to do with the tour performance itself as it is totally out of their control, but it's something to keep in mind.

Tour was fantastic. The tour guide Ivana was well worth the money alone. She kept us entertained while delivering useful information on each location. Get lost in beautiful Kotor and kick back by the beach in Budva.

Loved Kotor but too much time was spent travelling with only a short time in Kotor - would have liked at least another hour. UNderstand the problem with delays at border controls. The bus driver and guide were as usual very professional.

Review by:   Collette K,    September 2017 Review: 1 star rating: I do not recommend this
Kotor location is beautiful but the tour guide cannot guide in that country and you are left on your own. BUdva was a waste of time too. Note to anyone taking a bus tour from Croatia, waits at immigration going and coming can be up to two hours each way, another waste. Go it alone in a car rental would give more time to explore.

The tour did not start well. This was the message I got from the company two days before: Please meet our tour guide at 7:00 am across the street from Hotel Petka, in front of the white building with the balloon and sigh Port of Dubrovnik. We were at said place at 6.55 and saw the tour bus go past us without stopping. After calling them several times on the phone and WhatsApp they only answered at 7.40. It seems the pick-up place was intended to be INSIDE the building and not IN FRONT of it, as the email wrongfully pointed. They said the only option to join the tour was for us to pay a taxi to meet the bus inside the city. After some arguing, they agreed it was their fault and paid for the taxi. When we got to the bus, the guide rushed us in the bus and we heard angry comments from the rest of the passengers, like it had been our fault that we were late._br/_ Apart from that, we had a decent time in Kotor 2 hours enough to see the centre, but not to climb the walls if you wanted and Budva 1 hour. The guide was insightful and provided good information. Shame we spent 2.5 hours total on the border-crossings, but there's nothing you can do about that.

For the 12 hour trip we got to spend only 2 hours site seeing. The rest of the time was driving and border checks. Border checks take a relatively short time unless you are on a tour bus. Then they put you in line behind 10 or 12 other tour buses and check the passport of each individual on the bus. if it's just you in a rental car it will go MUCH faster. We spent at least 3 hours total crossing the border down and back.

Kotor is amazing! The views are spectacular. The reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 is because of the time spent at kotor, only 2 hours. I think maybe if you were on a smaller tour instead of a coach you may get longer there, so next time would book a small tour.

I found it very difficult to rate this tour. It was an extremely long day, with a pick up at 7:00pm and return to hotel at 9:30pm._br/_ The itinerary was a good one and everything expected was covered._br/_ The guide was extremely knowledgeable. He presented everything in English and French. I was concerned that when I was picked up in the morning, he exclaimed, You picked the wrong month of the year and the wrong day of the week to do this tour. I was later to find out why._br/_ The one hour wait at the Montenegro border southbound and three hours northbound ruined the day. I do wonder why this tour is run on particular days, when operators already know of the very long delays. Is Friday particular bad?_br/_ Kotor was extremely interesting, as was Budva. The history of these settlements and information on Montenegro was very well presented.

The bus ride was through some very picturesque countryside. The tour guide and driver handled the border crossing efficiently._br/_ Kotor was a quaint walled old town. Budva was a modest beach-side town with a well preserved walled old town. Overall, the day trip was a good introduction to Montenegro.

A long day but an excellent trip. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and was able to speak in several languages to accommodate the different nationalities. When we were given free time he was able to make sure we all knew where to meet him and he had extensive knowledge of the country and the different places we visited knowing the history right from the middle ages.

Worst Viator tour ever!!! We have done many Viator tours over the years and they have always been excellent - this one was not! Firstly no one warns you how long you are going to be on the coach - out of a 12 hour trip we only had 2 breaks - 1hr 45mins in Kotor and 45 minutes in Budva! We were actually on the coach for 5 hours before we got to Kotor. Whilst I appreciate that things like border crossings are out of the operators control, their guide most definitely isn't. This guide spoke in a monotone throughout his entire ramblings and they were littered with 'aaaaahs' and 'errrrrs'. At one point he had been speaking for a while without the microphone, when he realised he apologised but no one responded - I honestly think they were all asleep! When we finally arrived in Kotor we were not allowed to walk off to the obvious entrance but were shouted at as if we were children and told to all walk together. On our very short visit to Budva we were told that he had to be back at the bus stop by a certain time - only for the bus to circle us for over 30 minutes as it could not park! We then had to walk to another area where he had managed to find a space. The cities themselves were beautiful but we would not recommend this as a day trip - the short time you spend there doesn't make up for the hours and hours on the bus.

The trip to Montenegro was very scenic around the bay of Kotar and Budva well worth going to. _br/_ The hour and a half going and the hour coming back waiting on the coach to cross the border was definitely the downside.

The trip is about 12 h long. They give you 1,5 hours in Kotor and 1,5 hours in Budva and two additional 10 minutes stops. You can easily count that from the 12h trip you'll be spending only 3 hours exploring the cities. We were stuck on Croatian border for almost two hours on the way back.

Pick up from Pile gate was 30 mins late. It took us a long time to get a hold of the agency, but they eventually texted us that they were on their way but running late. We had specifically asked whether this was a small bus tour, as we were not interested in joining a 30 people bus and we had been assured it was. When the bus showed up, it was a giant monster with well over 30 guests on board. Several of whom were of course at least 15 mins late getting back to the bus at every stop. The agency's excuse was that they had gotten a lot of bookings just yesterday. They should not assure people it's a small tour when they are not sure. We kept on running into an american lady who had organized her tour in Dubrovnik itself, was on a mini bus with 3 people only and paid a significantly lower price for the tour than we did. _br/_ However, the tour is worth it. The bay of Kotor is beautiful, and Kotor itself a nice little walled town that seemed more lifely than Dubrovnik during our visit early April, before Easter holidays had started. More shops and restaurants were open. While the time given seems too short, we actually had enough time to walk through just about every street in the walled town, climb the city walls halfway and have a picnic. If you are planning on having lunch in town though, you will likely not have enough time to see it all. _br/_ Budva is completely different, it is smaller and rougher than Kotor but has a beautiful location on the beach. However, not much was open when we visited, making the visit time more than sufficient. This could be very different in summer months though. _br/_ It was a very long day with quite some frustration around certain passengers on the bus who showed no respect for their fellow travelers, but this trip is worth doing. I would however book it in town with a company who can assure you re the group size and mode of transportation if big bus tours are not your thing.

Very nice tour. We had a guide and a driver. The guide gave us an intro on the bus before the arrival, making the journey less dull. But then again, the view is so beautiful it was hard to get bored, even on the bus. Was interesting to see how cat friendly Kotor was. Ferry ride was also a nice touch.

If you are in Dubrovnik, you almost have to spend a day trip to Montenegro. Montenegro is a beautiful country to see and so close. This tour will whisk you past the usually long border crossing lines into Montenegro without any hassle. The guide handles everything for the border crossing.

We really enjoyed this tour. The guide, Branco, was informative and full of humour. Although the day was long it was very well organised. There are two longer stops at Kotor2 hours and Budva 1 1/2 hours. There is also a shorter stop in Perast and a short ferry ride. we would definately recommend the tour.

It is a good decision if you don't have enough time to stay in Montenegro a couple of days. You will be able to visit 3 cities and spend free time there. You can swim in the last stop if you wish. I didn't know, but the currency is euro.

Beautiful view of the Adriatic coast as you drive along. As a bonus, you might stop into Bosnia Herzegovina for a quick rest stop on the way.
