Heidelberg and Rhine Valley Day Trip from Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Germany

Visit two of Germany's most charming places on a full-day trip from Frankfurt. With an expert guide to show you around Heidelberg, you'll explore the ruins at Heidelberg Castle and see its medieval Old Town, the Karl Theodor Bridge and Heidelberg University. Your afternoon is spent discovering the UNESCO World Heritage-listed stretch of the Rhine River Valley, where you'll embark on a River Rhine cruise before enjoying a local wine-tasting session and dinner.

After boarding your luxury coach in central Frankfurt, you'll travel approximately 50 miles (80 km) south to the lovely city of Heidelberg. Often described as Germany's most beautiful city, Heidelberg will greet you with pretty Renaissance buildings, framed by vivid green hills on both sides of the River Neckar.

Heidelberg Castle perches over the city, and a visit to its famous ruins will undoubtedly be a highlight of your full-day trip. The evocative castle was created as a combination of several buildings clustered around a courtyard, each one representing different styles of German architecture. The castle is home to many interesting artifacts, including the famous Heidelberg wine barrel that boasts a capacity of more than 51 US gallons (193 liters) of wine!

You'll then take a walk around Heidelberg's medieval Old Town to see the famous Old Bridge (Karl Theodor Bridge), the beautiful Church of the Holy Spirit and Heidelberg University before transferring by coach to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed stretch of the impressive Rhine Valley. See romantic villages, pretty vineyards and medieval castles that frame the River Rhine.

On reaching Kaub, you'll enjoy a relaxing cruise down the River Rhine toward the town of Rudesheim, followed by a wine-tasting session and dinner. Your Heidelberg and Rhine Valley Day Trip offers the best way to experience this stunning region of Germany in a short space of time.

We were a party of 4 and we definitely expected much more than what we got. Out of 11 hrs, we spent around 6 hrs on a bus! Only 1.20 hrs on a boat. We would not recommend this tour.

This was a great trip. The weather was perfect and our guide Adrian was excellent. Our driver Alex did a great job of getting around the very narrow streets and avoiding cars...especially one going the wrong way. We did Heidelberg then the Rhine River cruise and dinner, and wine tasting. It was lot of fun and I would do it again._br/_ LT Canada

First, the tour was not what it was advertised to be. The bus driver was on of the worst drivers ever. Dozing off, all over the rode, nearly crashing into other vehicles. Had to wake up the tour guide to ask if the driver was under the influence. One of the scariest bus rides I have ever been on. The wine tasting was a joke, they gave a size taste of wine. I would never book another tour through them. 1/2 star for the tour guide who was knowledgeable.

It was an 11-hour day but unfortunately 6 hours of that was spent on an old, poorly-equiped bus. The trip to Heidelberg wasn't too bad - 1.5 hours but the the on-bus toilet was not operational. The tour guide Adrian was poorly presented scruffy old clothes, hair and not even an identifying badge. It seemed he and the bus driver Alex had their own deals going to avoid parking the bus in designated areas so we had to wait for pickup at two different spots in Heidelberg._br/_ The real problems began when we left Heidelberg. We diverted to pickup two more customers in Heidelberg, with the bus going down side-streets and getting stuck, having to reverse etc. We lost about 45 minutes. Then we were told by the guide the bus would take us back to the office in Frankfurt to drop off some customers and pickup others for the boat ride. It seemed the company just strung together two tours at their convenience not ours. We got off the bus in Frankfurt after a further 1.5 hours no bathroom break again! and got straight back on for the transfer for Kaub. This took a further 2 hours, all the while the guide telling us there was a possibility we might miss the last boat departure scheduled at 5pm. Thankfully they held the boat for 20 minutes so we got on. The boat cruise was good but light was fading fast. At the restaurant we were served a choice of a quarter chicken and fries or vegetables and fries - very poor. We moved to another room for a quick wine tasting that consisted of 5 plastic thimbles each with a splash of wine. It was embarrassing. We then got back in the bus for our return to Frankfurt that was then diverted to the cargo area of the airport to drop-off the two customers who had a car transfer back to Heidelberg. We have taken many Viator trips around the world - and never had such a terrible experience. A very bad way to end our stay in Germany and a waste of money.

Guide was great and I appreciated the effort to jam both events into one day, but both things could easily take up the better part of a day. Also there should be an option to pay less if you do not drink, which I do not.

Our driver/guide was super nice. That's the best thing I can say about the trip. I felt it was tremendously overpriced for the value. We were given a short tour of Heidelberg Castle ruins and then taken to the town and left on our own for an hour and a half. As far as the Rhine Valley sail, it was very nice, but it was followed by a sub-par dinner drinks, even water, cost extra! and a cheesy wine-tasting in a creepy, musty room. The whole thing could have been so much better.

Scene is beautiful, but most of the time is on the road, don't have enough time to explore the place

Overall a full and fun day. It's two separate trips - you return to Frankfurt after the Heidelberg part, and then go to the Rhine. Our guide, Adrian, was fun and informative.

The guide was good and it was beautiful. Unfortunately the bus broke down, we waited for hours for the bus to be fixed and missed the second half of the tour. Despite the refund, it's disappointing

Tour guide and driver were great, however we expected much more for the price we paid based upon the write up. _br/_ There was wasted travel time as it was really two half day tours, not one full day trip. Dinner was lackluster, the wine tasting wasn and #39;t at a winery and they only gave you thimbles worth.

Great day of touring took the double tour of Heidelberg castle and Rhine valley what a way to spend a day seeing the castle ruins and taking a boat ride up the majestic Rhine river, great memories !

It's even a travel company run the tour. As it's a very poor car and no air conditioning in the car. Don't take this tour. Not worth the money.

Heidelberg was amazing but extremely rushed. The guide had great knowledge of the city and castle and #39;s history but there was hardly any time to explore on your own.

Our guide Adrien was funny and nice. The castle was very lovely and having the chance to explore the town of Heidelberg on our own was very fun. We then returned to Frankfurt to retrieve a few more tourists and drop of a few. The ride to the Rhine Valley was easy and the boat trip was beautiful. Dinner at the restaurant was an experience, the decor was like nothing ever seen before. Food was fine. A great way to end our 4 week vacation of Europe.

This was two trips placed together - morning/afternoon. The morning trip and tour of the Heidelberg castle and village were superb! Read about the history of the castle before going to have a greater appreciation of the site. The afternoon Rhine River cruise was enjoyable. Beautiful scenery of the river, castles and vineyards. The dinner and wine tasting at a tacky restaurant were a huge disappointment. Our choices for dinner were a baked chicken or vegetarian dish everyone thought the tour guide was joking - he said they were German chickens or schnitzel for extra Euros. At the tasting we were served four different wines but only a sip. Don't expect a true wine tasting experience. If you select this trip, go for the castles and scenery, not for the culinary experience.

Everything went well on this trip. Maybe could have used a little less humor and a lot more information.

Heidelberg city is worth visiting because of the very good preservation of this ancient city architecture and the magnificent city-view! I did not enjoy the Rhine valley trip when it was arranged in the afternoon or the sunset time because it was dark at the end and chilly outside. The dinner and the wine tasting was ok but not that extraordinary. Thanks Adrian for being a very funny and informative tour guide!

Tour guide and driver was okay. Dinner was lousy. Service staff was rude. We were surprised that the wine tasting was behind the restaurant instead of at the vineyard. Did not get to see the vineyard at all. Certainly not worth the value.

The combination tour to Heidelberg and the Rhine Valley was fantastic -- it was my last full day in Europe and I could not have asked for a better send off. The Rhine Valley cruise especially was amazing -- so romantic and gorgeous. I was lucky to have perfect weather. I met some very nice and fun people on the tour, so I felt like I made some new friends even though I joined the tour myself.

Great tour of the Heidelberg castle, was able to spend some time in the main square of Heidelberg, beautiful river tour where we saw many castles, and good meal for dinner and wine for a wine tasting.

Both Heidelberg and the Rhine Valley are must see, but spend a whole day on each instead of both in one day if you can. Also, the food was incredibly disappointing! So much of the travel experience is the food of the place you're visiting and this tour's food was awful. A cheese sandwich on the bus that could be bought at a gas station and the dinner was a lousy piece of chicken and fries, pathetic!

This is a wonderful tour if you want to make the most out of one day. Our tour guide, George, was wonderful and very knowledgeable about all the sights and their history. Bus driver, Alfredo, was very friendly as well. Although I don't see anything wrong with spending a full day in Heidelberg, a half day is fine if you are seeing many other German towns. The view from the bridge is spectacular! The Rhine River Valley boat tour is also a great experience. The ride is certainly long enough for you to feel like you've seen many castles and it's very peaceful. My only recommendation for the second half of the tour is that they should clarify what's included in the dinner at the time of booking. Dinner is included but you pay extra for anything that's not the vegetarian meal, and you pay for dessert and drinks. I'm vegetarian anyway so it didn't affect me as much but others had to pay extra if they wanted schnitzel, etc. Otherwise, a great time! I recommend buying some EisWein....

My wife and I were in Frankfurt for only 1 day so we needed a tour which would give us the most opportunity to sightsee as possible. This tour fit the bill perfectly. The tour guide was informative, funny, and really enjoyed his work._br/_ Highly recommend this tour for those with limited time.

Love Heidleberg and Rhine River. The tour guide was good and had a good sence of humour. Bus ride was rough and when you present a wine tasting don't do it in plastic cups. Always use wine glasses with a bucket for waste.

We enjoyed the tour, especially the Rhine Valley. When I ordered this I didn't realize that these were actually divided into two separate tours. They took us to the Heidelberg castle in the morning, then drove us back to the office while a few people departed the bus and a few new people came on and then we left for the Rhine in the afternoon. This created a lot of driving for one day. Had I know I would have done it differently. The castle was beautiful as well as the Rhine. We enjoyed the chicken dinner that came with the Rhine tour section. The sandwich provided and eaten in the parking lot at the Heidelberg castle was less exciting. This is a good way to see things when you don't know your way around. I would do it again next time but split the tours into two separate days.
