Heidelberg Half-Day Trip from Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Germany

Visit the romantic city of Heidelberg on a half-day trip from Frankfurt. With an expert guide to show you around, you'll explore the ruins at Heidelberg Castle and discover the city's Old Town, home to Renaissance period buildings, the Karl Theodor Bridge and Heidelberg University.

After boarding your luxury coach in central Frankfurt, you'll travel approximately 50 miles (80 km) south to the lovely city of Heidelberg. Often described as Germany's most beautiful city, Heidelberg will greet you with pretty Renaissance buildings, framed by vivid green hills on both sides of the River Neckar.

Heidelberg Castle perches over the city, and a visit to its famous ruins will undoubtedly be a highlight of your half-day trip. The evocative castle was created as a combination of several buildings clustered around a courtyard, each one representing different styles of German architecture.

The castle is home to many interesting artifacts, including the incredible wine barrel that is stored within the castle ruins. Reputedly the largest in the world, the Heidelberg wine barrel can hold more than 51 US gallons (193 liters) of wine! Views from Heidelberg Castle are equally intriguing, and you'll enjoy panoramic views over Neckar Valley from an elevated viewpoint.

Back in Heidelberg itself, you'll take a walk around its medieval Old Town to see the famous Old Bridge (Karl Theodor Bridge) and the beautiful Church of the Holy Spirit. See Heidelberg University, which is Germany's oldest, before relaxing on your hour-long journey back to Frankfurt.

Should you be lucky enough to be on the Heidelberg half-day trip between November 23 and December 22, you will also visit the Heidelberg Christmas Markets. The Christmas Markets in Heidelberg feature over 140 beautiful wooden stalls bearing handmade gifts and baked goods. You'll have time to shop at leisure and sample delicious food before returning to Frankfurt.

The views from the castle were incredible! Might have been my favorite activity in Germany. Our guide was friendly and informative

Beautiful tour. Heidelberg is beautiful. Dont recommend going on a Sunday like we did only because there are a lot of shops that are closed. It was still really fun.

Snow falling while visiting a magnificent old castle and town is a magical experience. Well worth the visit, although we didn't spend long enough on the mountain or in the old town. Both were glorious. Things I'd change: the bus was too cold and it was a freezing experience for an Australian. Unfortunately, the information guide's voice was drowned out by a large American group who seemed to complain and know more than the German guide. Very good value for money though.

Loved this day trip to beautiful Heidleberg. Being there at Christmas market time made it very special. We would have loved a few more recommendations on places to go during our extensive free time, as other reviewers have noted, it's mostly a hop on and off tour with little guide assistance in the town. Still a lovely day out of Franfurt and the castle stop was great.

Great trip. It was winter so there was hardly anyone at the castle, and only two of us for the trip. Our guide, Tomas, was very knowledgeable and friendly. He made jokes and the trip with him was comfortable and enjoyable. I would recommend this trip to anyone visiting and wanting to see something special while not having to spend an entire day traveling.

Great trip by minibus with our guide Thomas and a couple other people. Thomas gave good commentary about sites and towns along the way from the starting office to Heidelberg. Toured the castle and then spent a little time in the old town which, because it was December, had Christmas markets strewn all along the 1.5 kilometer high street. Very quaint and enjoyed some gluhwein and wurst. Overall a very pleasant trip.

I was so disappointed in my supposedly six hour tour to Heidelberg. Our bus left a little bit after 9:30 and our guide narrated for a short time while we were on the bus. Then we reached the castle. Well let me tell you that the tour of the castle does not include the interior at all. The only thing we could do was take pictures outside on the veranda and see a very small pharmacy museum. Absolutely no interior whatsoever is included. The guide told us about one minutes worth of information about the castle and then said we were on our own. How was this a guided tour? This was extremely disappointing. We then boarded the bus again and we went into town. Our guide pointed out a bakery and restaurant and then left us on our own once again. No direction whatsoever. I have no idea how he can call himself a guide. He then said we had to be back at the bus at 1:30 which I was very surprised by. The trip back to Frankfurt is just over an hour so why are we leaving at 1:30 when the tour is supposed to be over at 3:30? We shouldve had more time in town. We return to Frankfurt at 2:45 which is 45 minutes before scheduled. I have been on many many many tours in many different countries and I can honestly say this was the absolute worst one Ive ever been on. Do not take this to tour it is not worth your money.

Very beautiful town. Would like to spend less time at the castle and more time in the town.

Heidelberg is a lovely town. I am glad I got to see it. This tour was way overpriced, though. For just under 100, we got a ride to Heidelberg in a van, a little bit of history, an escort to see the giant wine cask, a ride down the hill, a cheese sandwich, and a ride back to Frankfurt. We had a little bit of time on our own at the castle though we couldn't enter, and a little bit of time at the Christmas Market. I had a very nice 1/2 day, but it's hard to recommend this trip at this price.

I'm glad i'd booked this tour. After a half day canal cruise in Frankfurt, there's really nothing to see as all the stores in Frankfurt are closedGuise said All stores are closed on Sundays. It was a great experience to see the other side of Frankfurt. love the history of the Castle, roamed around Heidelberg. Our tour guide Nathalie is nice and Knowledgable.

The half day trip was a good length of time to visit the town, the castle and have some time for coffee and the great German desserts! Our guide Natalie was very entertaining and attentive. The ride there was an easy hour in a comfortable small bus. If you are looking to tour for the day at a fairly leisurely rate with lots to look at, this is a good one!

This trip was wonderful and was one of the prettiest places we have visited in Europe, even though it was cold and raining. The autumn leaves were glorious but if u don't like the cold go in October and you will still get the leaves though the place would be beautiful any time of the year. Our guide was humorous and knowledgeable and Larry our bus driver competent once again. Would recommend the morning time slot.

We recommend this half day trip in order to emerge in a beautiful city, embedded with history and tradition. The guide was very well documented and he told us a lot of interesting stories.

We had an excellent trip and guide the day before on the Viator arranged visit to the Rhine Valley country. This Heidelberg half day trip 9:30-3PM was less enjoyable as our guide's English was difficult to follow because of his accent and his speaking much too fast. We got the feeling he was bored and just wanted to race through it. A recorded audio program would actually have been better than trying to listed to him. Plus he had an injured leg or hip which actually made the group have to slow down for him. He should not be giving walking tours. Also, during the hour or more trip each way to/from Heidelberg he mainly talked to the driver and on his phone. Our guide on the Rhine Valley tour the day before would talk about the towns we drove pass and history etc. This guide told us nothing. It's time for him to find a different job. The castle itself is worth seeing but maybe better to buy the Audio tour 5 euro and understand what you're seeing.

The tour did everything it said and was ok. My wife had a hard time understanding the guide's accent, so I mostly had to explain everything to her so she would be able to know what was going on. If you want a quick highlight tour of the town, this tour is for you.

Our guide came of a bit stuffy at first, but he's just german and liked to keep to schedule. He is a very nice man, and informative. _br/_ The castle is beautiful, and the town exquisite. But for the amount paid for this tour, i am not satisfied.

Heidelberg is such a beautiful place and I'm so glad I did this tour to go explore it. We had an awesome guide who made the whole experience very fun even in the downpour we happened to get that day!. The castle is so beautiful, and I understand why it is described as such a romantic place. The city centre which you have free time to walk around at the end is also quite beautiful! If you want to see more of the historic parts of Germany this a great way to spend some time out of the more modern city of Frankfurt.

So, we did see all of the sights listed in the tour highlights. However, the entire tour was very rushed. We did not have any time to enjoy the architect or the scenery - it was a constant go, go, go. The trip was way overpriced. We paid 85.00 for a bus ride from Frankfourt to Heidelberg and admission to the castle which only cost 7.00 per person. Our trip was cut short by 1/2 hour because Our tour had two tourists that needed to be back in Frankfourt for the next tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and we were thankful for that! Overall, though, absolutely not worth the money! I would not recommend this company.

This tour was truly a great experience, Natalie and Ben were amazing tour guides and we had such a great time. Im usually hesitant to do organized tours, maybe because Im young and dont want to be held back by older people in the group, but this really was the best, cheapest, and most convenient way to see Heidelberg. My only complaint is that I wish that we wouldve had 2 hours to explore the city center - 1 hour in that part of town really wasnt enough time to see everything. By the time I got my bearings and was finding things to see, it was already time to go back on the bus! But I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for a day trip from Frankfurt we actually much preferred Heidelberg to Frankfurk, and Natalie and Ben were part of the reason!

Lovely town, knowledgable guide, but very disappointed in the Heidelberg Castle section of the tour since we only saw a VERY SMALL portion and that was the reason I took the tour. Recommend renting a car and doing this tour on your own!!

Fun and excellent tour. Your tour guide was very knowledgable and interactive making this tour very enjoyable. Included in the tour is about an hour to explore the main square of Heidelberg on your own which allowed us to check out local stores and restaurants before heading back to our hotel._br/_ I highly recommend it.

This tour goes morning and afternoon. In the winter I would choose the morning tour. We unfortunately only landed in Frankfurt at lunch time and could only do the afternoon tour - in the dark. Although the castle was lovely at night, you didn't get to see the surrounding city or the view from the castle - that you would have got during the day. The Heidelberg Markets were a must see though - lots of great stalls and food stalls. Tried my very first hot beer! It was different. We met some lovely people. I would recommend it, but as I say the morning tour would probably be better.

Our guide seemed to be in a rush to get us there, get us home and get us through the tour, a cold packaged sandwich and water were offered to us. I loved sseeing the little city of Heidelberg, very quaint, beautiful castle, glad I went, I wish our driver had been more engaging

The tour guide was awesome. Everything went smoothly. Heidelberg was a really cool city to visit and I would recommend it to anyone. The half day was perfect and I felt like we had the perfect amount of time to spend in the city. The castle tour took about an hour and we had an hour or so to spend walking around the city. Definitely would recommend.
