Rhine Valley Trip from Frankfurt including Rhine River Cruise

Frankfurt, Germany

See the best of Germany's Rhine River Valley on a half-day or full-day trip from Frankfurt. As a time-friendly way to see the Rhine Valley, both trips include a must-do Rhine River cruise and local wine-tasting session amid stunning scenery.

Leave the city of Frankfurt behind for an unforgettable day of River Rhine sightseeing! This stretch of the Rhine Valley is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and comprises romantic villages, pretty vineyards and medieval castles that frame the spectacular River Rhine in central Germany.

Winding northwards from Switzerland to the North Sea, the River Rhine is stretching an impressive 766 miles (1,232 km). To see it all would require several days, so your Rhine Valley Day Trip focuses on its beautiful UNESCO World Heritage listed stretch.

For those with less than a full day to spare, choose the half-day Rhine Valley trip to enjoy a Rhine River cruise (from Kaub to Rudesheim) followed by a wine-tasting session and dinner. This is a great way to experience this unforgettable region in a short space of time.

Alternatively, the full-day Rhine Valley trip includes a longer Rhine River Cruise which passes the iconic Loreley Rock. You'll relax over lunch in a gorgeous riverside restaurant and then take a Rhine River cruise to the harbor at St Goarshausen. Here you'll disembark for a wine-tasting session before spending time at leisure in Rudesheim with its many wine bars and shops.

The cruise on the Rhine River is wonderful. It was very relaxing while taking in the sites. It was challenging to hear the history being told over the speakers on the boat. The restaurant seating for lunch was tight and it was the same location for the wine tasting but it was fun. Our bus had an air conditioning problem and the water was leaking from the cargo shelf above. The driver and the tour guide did everything they could to make the passengers comfortable.. even handing out umbrellas!

It was lovely to see Rhine river from Frankfurt with this tour. Our guide was knowledgeable and funny. Lunch was at a cute decorative restaurant with yummy ice wine. It's a great way to see the highlights of Rhine River.

There's a lot of positive in this trip, but enough negatives to offset a really good review.

The Rhine cruise is something I had waited to do for a many years now. Finally had a chance to take this trip few weeks back. It was a 6 hour trip and we didn't expect the actual cruise boat ride to last only 1.5 hours, rest of it was only bus ride. The boat ride was amazing though! The view on both sides of the river were breath taking and the experience was memorable. the trip guide gave great insights to the history, geography of the area. The dinner was quite a let down, just one course meal. Wine tasting was also not anything major to talk off. Found the cost quite exorbitant in that sense.

Great tour and great tour guide. The locations we visited were all beautiful with a rich history and great sights. Lots of opportunities for great photos both on land and on the river. _br/_ We took a bus from Frankfurt and made a few stops along the way before reaching the river. The river cruise lasted about 1 1/2 hours. The views on the river were stunning. The crowing achievement was the Lorelei rock and statue the statue is after the rock so be prepared with your camera!. Beautiful villages along the way, so much so my wife and I were trying decide which house we would want to live in!_br/_ At the city we at stopped before the river, my wife took the ski lift down to the bottom and she got some great photos of the area. It had beautiful views of the Rhine. She had to pay an extra 10 euro for that but she felt it was worth the money._br/_ The ship was great and we went on the first day they started the tours so there wasn't a ton of people on the ship. The ship also offers drinks at extra cost. We were able to go topside and get some great views and pictures of the Rhine valley and all the castles! It was the best part of the whole tour!_br/_ My only complaint comes about the food that they offer. They took us to a really cool looking restaurant. It looked like a place where the food should have been better than what we got. They served Schnitzel with fries the fries looked and tasted like American McDonalds fries that had been sitting out for a bit. The Schnitzel was medium sized, plain, and tasted like it was frozen then re-heated like a frozen dinner from the supermarket. It didn't taste bad but I thought it would have been restaurant quality not re-heated from frozen at home quality. The German food I had previously eaten even at the German train stations! was so great that I was really expecting better but instead we got more of what I would have expected from a cheap tour in the US. Also, they served Apfelstrudel for dessert but, spoiler alert, it was at extra cost, not included in the lunch. They might have mentioned this online but I don't remember reading about it and they certainly didn't say anything when they were taking orders for it so I wrongly assumed it was at no extra cost. It was around 8 euro per dessert. It was not very good. A dessert from your typical Germany bakery would knock your socks off for far less money. This tasted like a processed American pastry. So I felt overcharged and underwhelmed by the food. I would have gladly paid more money for this tour had it included a full meal that was Germany quality._br/_ Overall it was a great experience. Improve the food and this would be a great tour to take that would offer a high quality German experience that would leave me wanting more.

The trip was very enjoyable and relaxing. Since most companies do not offer cruises until April, I was very happy that this one was offered year round. Our guide was Michael and he was great...funny, helpful, and accommodating. My only suggestion is that we had been told that dessert was extra at lunch it was good so worth it, but still would have been helpful. Also, the wine tasting at the end of the tour could have been a little more generous.

It was a beautiful drive up the Rhine Valley and Michael our tour guide was amazing with sharing information. He also had a lot of patience as the group we were with, was quite a handful. As it was winter, the boats were not running on regular schedules, but Michael managed to find one and we had a very quick trip on the river which was amazing. The food was ok, but not great - smallest portion I have ever experienced in Germany, but was enough for me and the wine tasting is not really worth mentioning as a feature of the tour, but at least you get to taste a little sip of each of the local wines. I think the trip will be amazing during summer months when the weather is better and you can make the most of the boat cruise, but I would not recommend winter tours unless you like driving around the whole day. The scenery was still beautiful and Michael informative, but you do not get to do much.

I never complain but felt compelled to write a personal review of the Rhine Tour we participated in. Our tour guide Michael was very pleasant and entertaining however the trip itself was a disappointment due to the following reasons:

Review by:   tony a,    December 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The time on the boat was far too short. The tour started in Frankfurt at 11:15. It could have started earlier, with extra time on the boat. We did not even see Die Lorelei._br/_ Most important, the bus ride to the River was horrible. If you are an average sized American, you can not fit on the bus. The only people who were able to walk down the bus were those under 120 pounds. It was painful and embarrassing to try and walk on the aisles. Makes an airline look huge.

Our favorite day in Germany was when we did the Rhine River Cruise. This was a lovely, information filled day. It included a zipline ride down a mountain side to the river, a great meal, wine tasting and of course the Rhine River cruise. We saw vineyards, castles, cute German townships, businesses, shops and some of the friendliest folks. This was a great tour for the money. We highly recommend this tour.

I booked the trip to go and see the Lorelei Rock but then only found out on the boat trip that it was not going to go that far - they should have informed me beforehand!

We went on this trip on Sunday 03 Dec, the first day it snowed this year in a Frankfurt which made the trip more magical, our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The only thing I would change was the amount of time we had at the last stop at a Christmas market, it was very busy and 30 minutes wasnt long enough. The food was ok but not great and the wine tasting was just an extra sell for the restaurant. Overall an enjoyable day.

The tour itself is worth it for the cruise down the Rhine River. Absolutely beautiful! If the time of year is right and the chair lift is open, this was a lot of fun too. My only criticism was the wine tasting. Very average wines served out of plastic thimbles. Very hard to swirl and sniff out of a thimble.

The tour was actually excellent. The car used for transport was new and spacoius and the driver/guide excellent and very fluent in English. The boat trip was good with magnificent views on both sides with lot of castles and small cities. Bar/cafeteria on boat was nice and it was nice to enjoy the scenery together with coffee and drinks. Lunch in Assmannshausen was good and big enough. The only disappointment was the wine tasting and therefore I gave only 3 stars to the tour. Wines were excellent, but to taste excellent icewine and other wines from small plastic mugs didnt make good for the wines. I Hope that next groups will taste the wines from real wineglasses.

Good tour with lots of interesting sights. The actual cruise was nice, but not great. As usual, so much depends on the tour guide, and George was great. He kept things moving without being pushy and was a wealth of information.

Very good trip and well worth the money. Good dinner and wine tasting. We were in Germany late in the year so it got dark while we were on the boat and could not get good pictures of the castles, but still an amazing time.

This is really an amazing day for the money. The coach ride is very comfortable and if the lift from the top of the mountain is being offered at the beginning of the trip before lunch, don't miss it! The lunch was just right and the river cruise was perfect amount of time and many beautiful castles and sights to be seen! The wine tasting afterwards was a great education on German wines as well.

This could have been a very good trip if the company was better organized. We ended up visiting the same town 3 times. What a waste of valuable time. It was not very clear what stop to get off the boat on, so we were very lucky to not have left anyone behind. My husband ended up going up and down the boat looking for people he recognized from our tour to make sure everyone knew the next stop was ours. The tour guides certainly weren't doing it. Many people ended up thanking my husband as they didn't know it was our stop. At one of the sites of interest, while our guide was knowledgeable, he didn't share that knowledge so we had no idea what we were visiting until we overheard someone else from another group talking about it. At the end of the trip, our bus picked up 3 extra passengers the 3rd time we went to the same village to drop off at the airport, which was out of the way. Not a great end to the trip.

Scenery was beautiful on the Rhine. Made several stops on the bus that were very nice with beautiful views of the vineyards in fall color. Lunch was in a quirky little restaurant with lots to look at. Lunch consisted of fries and a breaded chicken patty. Wine tasting was at the bar side of the same restaurant and consisted of 4 thimble sized samples of wine and the wine was very expensive .

This Rhine River Cruise was everything I hoped it would be. We saw ancient castles, churches, vineyards, and quaint towns along the way._br/_ Also, enjoyed the bus ride through the scenic countryside. Our guide and others were very helpful with information and directions. The weather was beautiful, so that added to the overall great experience.

Everything about it was fantastic! Except, we could have done without the lunch prefer to choose our own place and the wine tasting tiny sips out of little plastic cups is not our idea of decent wine tasting!. The lift ride down the valley, river cruise and visit to the top of the mountain were stunning, well worth it.

A very commercialized trip. The wine tasting is disappointing, not recommended for wine lovers who seeks for real Rhine wine tasting. Wine tasting took place in the restaurant which we dined at, not at any of the vineyard. Beside the Rhine river cruise, fantastic driver and guide, you won't get much out of this tour. Guide offers us to take the chairlift at optional fee and that is worth it.

An amazing tour well worth the money. This was our first trip to Germany and this tour added so much to our experience. Bus to and from the Rhine, lunch in a local place, boat down the Rhine (picturesque towns and lots of castles!), local wine tasting! If you book one tour in Germany, book this one!

This was a fantastic trip, the best part of our entire visit to Germany by far. We all highly recommend this trip. Great value, gorgeous scenery and an excellent tour guide/driver. We got much more than we ever expected on this trip, from the views of the Rhine Valley before the cruise, to the tram ride down to the river. This is something not to miss!

Review by:   Alta C,    October 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
This was a disappointing trip that I will not be recommending. Lunch consisted of a small, bland piece of chicken schnitzel, a handful of over-salted fries, and a slice of tomato and cucumber that was supposed to be a salad. Immediately after lunch was wine tasting. The wine tasting was in a dark, cramped room with four, half thimbulfuls of wine not in St Goarshausen as advertised. They were not good wines. The tour began at 11:15, however we did not get on the boat until 2:45. Therefore, the cruise lasted less than an hour and a half, ending before 4:10. It was impossible to hear any information about the castles during the cruise and no written information map or book was offered beforehand. Also, the cruise is advertised as being on a steamer boat. It is not. We also did not have the opportunity to explore Rudesheim. In fact, we were given 15 minutes in the town and told to go to only one particular shop. While the cruise up the river was beautiful, none of the rest of the tour was as advertised.

The way the description was written I was expecting more than a 2 hour cruise on a full day Rhine tour. And at that - the cruise turned around 3/4 of the way through so it was quite disappointing to go dock where we had lunch. I was hoping to see a lot more than the 3 castles. The remaining 5 hours on the bus were good - just not what was expected. It was a pleasant surprise to stop at the large Niederwald monument for 10 minutes the view was excellent and lunch was good. And - there was no wine tasting as advertised. That was a huge disappointment until Chuck, a fellow traveler, bought some wine and small glasses to partake in a bit of tasting. I took a side tour the day before on the public transportation system train to St. Goar and felt that was a much better use of my day. On a side note, the tour guide was personable.

This cruise will take up your entire day for a 1 1/2 hour cruise and a whopping 20 minutes to spend in Rudesheim! And the wine tasting is a joke. You're given 4 'thimbles', seriously, of 4 different wines. _br/_ I had only one day in Frankfurt with my son and we wasted the day on this tour.

We took the 8-hour full day Rhine Valley trip, operated by ETS. ETS arranged for us to be picked up in the morning from our hotel for a fee, which was very helpful. For the same fee Euro 10 we were dropped off at our hotel on the return. Once all attendees arrived at the ETS office we were bussed to Ammanhausen, which is the town where the UNESCO Heritage Site along the Rhine begins. We were given lunch at a local restaurant and then boarded the cruise boat. Unfortunately the lunch restaurant was awful - cramped, with a very basic set menu and tasteless food. Wine tasting was offered at an adjoining facility but my husband and I did not participate as we don't drink so I can't comment on that. Our expectation was that the cruise would be 8 hours but, in fact, it was 2. The facilities on the boat were excellent with it arranged as individual tables and guests being able to order snacks and drinks. The view and ride itself were beautiful and relaxing. On the way back we stopped at the town of Rudesheim for souvenir shopping, which was great. One optional activity offered at an additional fee was to ride a lift like a ski lift from the top of a hill in Ammanhausen down to the restaurant location. We did not participate in that. The guide assigned to us for the day was excellent - friendly, knowledgeable, with the ability to relate to every guest. I would have rated this a 4 or even 5 star if the lunch were better and the cruise longer.

We had a great day on the Rhine River Trip. It was beautiful. The tour was well run and the tour guide was excellent. Our only complaint was we were not served authentic German food for lunch. We can have roast chicken anytime. it was disappointing. If you want to experience the Rhine River we would recommend this tour.
