Fraser Island 4WD Tour from Hervey Bay

Fraser Island, Australia

Spend an incredible day exploring the natural beauty of Fraser Island, seeing highlights such as Central Station, Wanggoolba Creek, Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, Seventy-Five Mile Beach, the Pinnacles, and the Maheno shipwreck. The island is a natural treasure chest, with abundant animal and plant life on land, and dolphins, dugong, sharks and humpback whales offshore. You’ll experience the island’s best on a full day trip with an expert guide, with plenty of time to enjoy the pristine lakes, beaches, creeks and rainforest.

After pickup at your hotel in Hervey Bay or meeting at Rivers Head, you’ll board the ferry to Fraser Island where you transfer to a comfortable four-wheel drive (4WD) air-conditioned coach. Your expert guide will share stories about the island's history, flora and fauna as you spend the day exploring the natural beauty of the World Heritage-listed island.

You’ll travel first to Central Station where you’ll stroll along a boardwalk next to the crystal clear waters of Wanggoolba Creek that stream over white sand through a rainforest valley. Discover idyllic shady spots surrounded by ancient king ferns and towering ghost gum and pine trees.

Next you’ll head to Lake McKenzie, a pristine gem with clear water and sandy white beaches. Note how soft your skin and hair feel after bathing in the fresh water of this picture perfect lake.

Then you’ll drive along Seventy-Five Mile Beach, a sandy highway where you can spot birds of prey and humpback whales (migrating July – November). You also can choose to sign up for a 15-minute scenic flight over the island (own expense) while the coach continues down the beach and meets the plane when it lands.

You’ll arrive at the spot where Eli Creek’s pours into the ocean. Follow your guide a short distance up the creek then float in the fast-moving water back to the beach.

Reboard your coach for photo stops at your next two destinations: the iconic Maheno Shipwreck–which washed ashore during an out-of-season cyclone in 1935–and the colored sand cliffs of the Pinnacles. Your guide will explain how the technicolor sand formations were created and the aboriginal legends about the site.

Along the way, you'll pull into a beach resort for a tasty buffet lunch. After your day’s adventures, you’ll catch the ferry back to River Heads and be returned to your hotel.

This was a long day with a lot of bumpy rides on the beach and in the rainforest but it was a great tour. We had a lovely ferry ride to the island. Spent more time than I expected riding on the 75 mile beach. We spent time at the creek, would have liked a little longer there. I decided to do the plane ride on the beach . It was not too expensive 80 dollars. It was a great experience to see the island from the air and see sharks in the water and take off and land on the beach. The lunch was 3 courses and had lots to choose from - very good. The other creek which was in the rain forest was very serene and peaceful. Lastly swimming in Lake Mackenzie was great. It so clear and not cold. It was really refreshing. Lastly Butch the guide was friendly and was so full of information I do not know where he stores it all. He drove well, gave people a chance to ride in the front of the bus if they wanted too. He took photos of you if you wanted him too. He also showed us a Guyana he had found climbing on a tree. He imparted lots of information to us. Well done driving and talking Bu5ch. I would definitely recommend this trip

Great guide, ride along the beach and informative walks. Lunch buffet was good quality and plentiful. Definitely worth doing. Well organised into smaller buses from the boat. Weather was not great, so didn't spend too much time at different parts of the island. Would be a great trip if weather was better.

Review by:   glenys.greer,    April 2018 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The trip to Fraser Island was very good. I enjoyed the ferry ride over and the guides were wonderful. I felt there was a lot of wasted time on the trip. The rain forest was great but we didn't spend much time there. The ship wreck was a waste of time and I didn't really like being on the bus just driving on sand for about an hour it was boring. I would have liked to have seen more and have been able to walk more on the trip.

Fabulous day out, I would highly recommend this trip. It rained all day on our day trip and although this disappointed us it did not spoil the day. Our driver mark was the best.

We enjoyed the tour day very much. It was well organized, the hotel pick up was on time. The tour guide was very good, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the whole tour day.

Great tour guide very informative and funny. Eli springs was beautiful. Wish I had my togs. Coloured sands was ho hum. lovely bush walk. Lake McKenzie was crystal clear and warm. It was just hard getting used to so many tour buses and people over there. Worth doing.

This was a real adventure! There are no roads on Fraser Island, just sand tracks, so the 4WD trip bounced around dramatically! Great buffet lunch followed by a wonderful drive along the beach- magical!!

They promised more wildlife and they only delivered one scrawny young dingo _br/_ The driver / tour guide was exceptional for both driving and knowledge of Fraser Island history and was very personable_br/_ The lunch was very good

Good tour, nice guys and a real nice day, with all, the bus tour in the sand, on the beach, photo stops, swimming, sunshine a dinner and interesting walks in the forest. We had a very nice driver at the bus, who was making the day funny, I would recommend it to others, _br/_ thank you!

When you get to Fraiser then prepare for a very bumpy ride. The environment and beachside was fantastic to take in, also the shipwreck. Interesting about how the island was built, with our skilled guide. We took the not included scenic flight, and saw the sand dunes and lakes from above not possible to see otherwise. Mind that for 80 dollars you get 15 min in the air.

Would highly recommend this trip. Peter was a great tour guide who knew everything there was to know about the Island it's history and the wildlife. The plane trip is worth the money to see the Island from above.

Too much time on the bus (more than 60% of the total time). It was fun for the first 10min but then you just want to get to the places. The beach is OK but you can’t swim or anything. The Eli creek is just not worth visiting. It’s a pitty that we did not spend more time on the lake Mckenzie.

Had a great day Sean our driver was great told us lots of information and story's._br/_ He did well as we had a puncture managed to get us back for lunch where he got it repaired._br/_ Would have liked to spend more time at the lake and walking through the rain forest and less time at the wreck._br/_ But would recommend this trip as the island is great.

The drive was great, Mark was knowledgeable sharing many interesting facts about the island and fauna and flora. Lunch was ok nothign to write home about. Time at Lake McKenzie was limited and the weather was not co operating. Overall a great experience, glad to have seen the island.

We experienced a wonderful day trip to Fraser Island. We found the trip even better than we had imagined and the buffet lunch was very good as well. We also thoroughly enjoyed our plane trip which was an extra which took off from 75 mile beach and we were given wonderful views of Fraser Island plus hidden lakes including butterfly lake. Swimming in Lake Mackenzie rounded off a thoroughly enjoyable trip despite it being late in the day and was a bit chilly. Would definitely like to go and perhaps do a two day or even three day trip to Fraser Island

We had a great day. Although we were a bit on a rush all the time because some fellows were late in the morning, the rest was really good._br/_ It's really worth to take the plane in 75 mile beach. You'll see the island from the air way much better than from the bus. And if you are lucky like us, you'll be able to see some whales too :_br/_ Lake McKenzie was amazing. You probably won't see anything like that anywhere else._br/_ The only thing we didn't like much was lunch. They could make a better effort with that.

We took this 4WD day tour of Fraser Island in March 2017, the day after Cyclone Debbie hit the coast. Pleasantly surprised by a gloriously sunny day, the tour and the Island lived up to it's reputation. Thank you Murray for a fabulously informative tour and for your expert driving skills. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire day's activities, our swim in the 'perched' Lake MacKenzie being the highlight for me. My husband and I would highly recommend this tour. The calm seas, the balmy temperature and the spectacular coral pink sunset on the return trip back to the mainland, was a most perfect end to an idyllic day. Thank you Fraser Coast Tours.

Fantastic day on Fraser Island from beginning to end. We were picked up at our resort and returned back that evening. Our driver/guide was great, the food at the buffet was good, and everything we saw was amazing. It is a long day, but well worth it!

We had an amazing day with the excellent guide and driver Kev. Travelled w two kids ages 6 and 9. They got tired every now and then so pack some extra snacks, fruit or so. But overall they also enjoyed the day bumping in the bus fuelled with kangaroojuice.

Te driver/guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the water part at Eli Creek and Lake McKenzie. Remember to bring along insect repellent, as summer there is lots of mosquitoes when going for forest walk.

It was well worth the money and the driver/guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. But if you have motion dickness in vehicles donot sit at the back of the bus.

The initial registration process was a bit confusing even though we checked in with the hut at River Heads. They took out Viator voucher but did not give us a coloured boarding pass for the buses on the island. It made us feel like we snuck on the bus. The tour itself was fantastic and gave us a real good overview of the key features on Fraser Island.

Wonderful island but one day tour is not enough. Lots of driving within the island's dirt roads. Not enough time to enjoy natural or historical beauties. Bear in mind the standard problems of traveling with a group.

The tour was great, fraser island is really beautiful and the tour company was on time. Our guide was very entertaining, but we realized after the tour that he had actually made up a lot of the facts that he shared during the tour. I would actually recommend to do one of the camping trips if you have the time, by the time we booked, everything was already sold out and we could only do the day trip.

Does what it says on the can! the 4wd was as bumpy as they said it would be but health and safety issues were well addressed. Very informative guide and a good buffet lunch. We were disappointed not to be able to swim in the sea but Lake McKenzie was exceptional and a good amount of time was allowed here.

This was one of our favorite things we did in Australia. Fraser Island is a must see!! We were so glad we booked this excursion instead of trying to rent our own car. It was nice to have a tour guide drive us around and show us the highlights so we never felt lost or overwhelmed. Lake McKenzie was our favorite, and we would have loved to have had more time there. We never felt rushed though. Everything was beautiful, and our tour guide Barry was hilarious! The lunch buffet was a pleasant surprise - we thought it might just be sandwiches, but they had lots of delicious options. We really enjoyed the little gift shop as well. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour. :

I did the one day tour more than a month ago and it was fantastic !! Only the cloudy weather was the bad part._br/_ Steve, our driver, is a lovely guy who knows everything about the island and therefore mad the visit very interesting. We saw 75-mile beach, the wreck, Ellie creek, the Pinnacles, McKenzie lake awesome and the rain forest. All wild nature and fresh water. No need for more._br/_ The food also is very nice: free unlimited buffet !! My stomach was very happy :

Friendly driver and guide Brian did a wonderful job. Very informative and approachable.Only lunch is included, so bring your own morning tea or snacks. I recommend this trip to everyone, especially first timers to Fraser Island. It is good to see the majestic forest growing back so that future generations may appreciate what it was like 100 years ago before logging.

The guide was really nice and explained lots of things about the island. Very happy overall. The only thing that was a bit annoying was when they were trying to sell the scenic flight from the beach. Even though everybody on the tour had made clear no one wanted to do it, they kept trying to sell it for too long. Trying too much.

We went with our two grandsons and had a great day. The plane flight was a hit with them and very enjoyable. Our guide David was very informative and friendly, nothing was a bother. We had a lovely day and would recommend the tour. Although I wish I had reliazed I paid American dollars,it was my fault but I feel I could of been informed at the time of booking.

Our bus driver/tour guide Warren was just the best. Perfect man for the job, he made the day amazing!!! Highly recommend this tour. Lots of places to hop off the bus and see things. If you're lucky you may see a Dingo, we saw only 1 in the last 10 mins of the day. All you can eat Lunch was great too.

Our guide Steve was very knowledgeable and interesting. The scenery was spectacular and the transportation was comfortable given the difficult terrain. The stops at the various sights were a bit hurried and could have been longer. The lunch provided was good.

This was a nice day, the driver/guide was entertaining and informative. The bus was clean and comfortable. Lunch at Eurong was sufficient. My only suggestion for improvement would be if the bus carried bottled water either for purchase or give away and perhaps some apples, oranges easy fruit that doesn't spoil too easily for morning tea at Lake MacKenzie. The trip was easily managed by my 79 year old mother.
