Your 2-hour tour to the emblematic monuments of this part of the town will be guided by a former university student or a European volunteer (European Voluntary Service - part of the European Union's Erasmus+ programme) integrated in this project, developed at the University of Madeira. This will be a university project with a side that will most certainly fascinate you.
Meet your guide at Naturalmente Português - History Tellers in La Vie Shopping Centre to begin this 2-hour guided walking tour of Funchal. Learn how the history of Madeira and Funchal shaped the city centre as you visit the most important points of interest.
Travel down the 19th century public walkway between the Municipal Theatre and the Cathedral, where sugarcane was first planted in Madeira, during the 15th century.
Explore the city’s medieval heart dating from the Golden Age of Sugar and discover the beautiful 17th century religious monuments.
Visit the ruins of the old Pilory Square and other remnants from past floods and the area damaged by the Great Fire of Funchal in 1584.
I enjoyed this walking tour. It was very informative and the perfect amount of time.

A good, unhurried excursion but not certain we actually learnt anything we could not have picked up from a good guide book.

What a wonderful tour! The tour is coordinated through the university and is conducted by college students. Our guide was professional and very knowledgeable. We were the only people on the tour, so we were able to ask questions, take our time and really enjoy the city. I would highly recommend this option to anyone stopping in Funchal.

The tour of the old town of Funchal by a dedicated guide gave us an excellent start to our two weeks in Madeira and provided much information about the founding of the town that we would have had to read about elsewhere. We were not hurried and the student took his time in giving us his knowledge about his surroundings that he was plainly passionate about.
