Grand Cayman Seaworld Observatory - Shipwreck and Fish Feeding Show

George Town, Cayman Islands

Explore spectacular coral reefs and shipwrecks off the coast of Grand Cayman on the Seaworld Explorer, a state-of-the-art semi-submarine. You'll visit a dramatic shipwreck, the Cali as well as famous Cheeseburger Reef where a diver will feed the many varieties of fish right in front of your window!

As your captain maneuvers the Observatory to various locations, you'll view abundance of marine life and even a historic shipwreck, through large windows. Throughout your tour, a guide will provide an informative yet entertaining narration, in an interactive setting while answering any questions you may have.

The first site you visit is a dramatic shipwreck, the Cali, a steel schooner built in 1900. This ship ran aground 100 yards (90 meters) off the coast of Grand Cayman in 1944. From here, your captain takes you to Cheeseburger Reef. Be sure to have your cameras ready when our diver enters the water and begins to feed the hundreds of multi-colored tropical fish right in front of your window!

Hear more tales of the high seas as the Seaworld Explorer takes you to see the wreck of the Balboa. The Balboa is a 375 foot (115 meter) freighter which traveled from Cayman to Cuba when she encountered one of the worst hurricanes in the island's history on 10 November, 1932. The ship was literally broken into pieces by huge waves as she was bounced along the ocean floor. Much of her cargo of wood was used to reconstruct the buildings seen in George Town today.

The Seaworld Explorer then brings you back to the dock in the heart of George Town where you'll disembark.

This excursion was very enjoyable and laid back. We boarded the boat about 45 minutes after arriving at the meeting place. We both enjoyed seeing the ship wrecks, as well as the feeding of the fish. This is a glass bottom boat for fish obervation.

Booked this trip as an alternative to the water bus where you look a TV monitors. I reckon this is much better. Boarding the boat was easy but then you have to climb backwards down a steep ladder so it is not suitable for anybody with mobility difficulties. However, once downstairs you are in a comfortable area with a long padded bench down the middle. As there were few other passengers on our trip we were easily able to swing our legs from one side of the bench to the other so we could look out of both sides of the submarine and catch sight of more of the fish. The name of the attraction is accurate. You see 2 shipwrecks which are mildly interesting and then a crew member gets out in the water in a wet suit and feeds the fish right next to the windows, so you get a chance to see them close up. There are some very colourful small fish, but don't expect to see anything large. I didn't realise it at the time, but when we were sitting in a bar overlooking the harbour, I noticed that the boat does not go more than a couple of hundred yards from the quay. In this area, the reef is pretty poor and the constant churning of the water by large cruise ships also makes the water cloudy and limits visability from the sub. We saw 1 turtle briefly and some small rays. Overall it's a worthwhile and interesting trip lasting about 1.5 hours. Some of our party felt rather motion sick by the end of the trip, as the sub tends to roll a bit, particularly when close to the wall of the quay, so be warned.

I and 3 others booked a tour and had expectations of seeing the beautiful Caribbean underwater via the observatory ship. We basically motored around the reef just adjacent the pier. The Observatory folks were nice enough but gave me credit for the cancellation of 2 people of our group in the most confusion refund process ever! I finallly figured out what we were charged once I got back home and could look at my credit card account! I don't feel like this excursion is a good example of what the Caribbean has to offer. I also feel like we were charged a big amount of money for what we experienced! Do't recommend this tour to anyone.

Motored around close to shore in a congested area, not very exciting

The tour was excellent. The sub made a circuit that lasted about 50 minutes. Nice selection of critters in view and saw a couple of sunken reef/ ships. Great tour guide and ship crew. Knowledgeable and friendly. _br/_ Only hassle was the time zone- boat vs. local time so we almost missed our slot time and the requirement to have a printed voucher despite that is says electronic voucher is accepted.

This was a rather short trip. I was expecting more bit I did enjoy the show. The narrator made it fun. Maybe I chose the wrong day to go as the cruise ship was intown. I would recommend to fellow travellers.

Excellent. Great views from all windows. The fish feeding was a frenzy of activity and the diver was completely covered with fish to where you could hardly see him._br/_ Recommend highly.

This was a great trip for the non-swimmer. Fortunately, we had a very light load and had free roaming.
