Ayrshire Coast Day Trip from Glasgow: Robert Burns Country and Culzean Country Park

Glasgow, United Kingdom

Visit the charming Ayrshire coast, birthplace of Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns, on this full-day trip from Glasgow. Home to ancient Scottish castles and a romantic countryside, you’ll find the region to be as captivating as Robert Burns described in his many poems and songs. Explore Culzean Country Park in the morning, and then spend your afternoon in the heart of ‘Burns Country’ – the town of Ayr where Robert Burns was born.

Leave the city bustle behind in Glasgow and head out by luxury minivan through Scotland’s Renfrewshire Hills. On the drive southwest to the Ayrshire coast, your friendly guide will keep you entertained, explaining some of the history of this charming yet relatively undiscovered region.

First stop on the coast is Culzean Country Park in South Ayrshire, a glorious retreat set in the middle of 600 acres (243 acres) of countryside. Your time here is spent at leisure, so you can do as much, or as little, as you like!

Explore the park’s pretty woodland trails and landscaped gardens, seeking out enchanting features like the Swan Pond or the Victorian Walled Garden. Alternatively, check out Culzean Castle if you wish (own expense). Created in the 18th century by renowned British architect Robert Adam, the cliff-top castle is akin to a treasure trove, with an array of fascinating rooms all brimming with history. Visit the armoury room to see an impressive display of pistols and swords, and learn of President Eisenhower’s links to the castle at the end of World War II.

After having lunch in the park grounds (own expense), meet your guide and continue by minivan past the ancient ruins of castle in Dunure. Next, you’ll arrive in the heart of Burns Country -- the market town of Alloway -- where you'll learn all you need to know about the celebrated Scottish poet Robert Burns.

You’ll have the afternoon to spend in Alloway independently, and your guide will give you plenty of tips for the best sights to see. Visit places mentioned in Burns’ poems and songs, like ‘Auld Kirk Alloway’ (the graveyard in his poem Tam o’ Shanter), or perhaps check out the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (any entry fees at own expense).

From Alloway, you’ll return to Glasgow by minivan, arriving in the city in the early evening.

We love historical estates, Robert Burns home on one end of the spectrum, a meager living, to grand living at Culzean Park. Our first stop was to the Whitelee Wind Farm and visitors center. Has a small cafe, bathrooms, and hands on educational exhibits.

Great guides, lots of stops and very interesting places along the way. The guide was perfectly witty and positive about Scotland. She made several recommendation about each stop and our experience was tremendous!

The tour was ok, the commentary wasn't that great, i've had more enthusiastic drivers and you it really makes the experience a lot better. Wish the driver invested more time and energy into it - was quite quiet a lot of the journey. Stop off points were good but if you don't pay the extra to get into museum and castle there's some hanging about - ok value for money

I have to warn you, if you do not know Robert Burns, this trip may be a little disapponting. If you do know a little about him, this is just the trip for you.

This tour was wonderful but I do have at least one fault with it which was not totally the tour's doing. The buildings of the Robert Burns site are so far apart, it would have been impossible to take them all in. Even with the driver's help at offering to drop us and pick us up at another place, the walking would not have been possible to take in all of them. Tickets sold were for a combination of entrances and would have been better if sold individually if requested. We did walk by the actual cottage with the help of our guide/driver. And the gardens would have deserved more quiet time to sit for a minute!

Amazing tour! Even with only two travellers, the tour went ahead. Our guide, Juliette, was professional, accommodating, knowledgeable, friendly and funny. She conducted her tour and conveyed her information conversationally. It was a glorious day! Culzean is a beautiful castle, the Ayreshire coast glorious and all the information about Robbie Burns fascinating. Couldn't have enjoyed it more.

The trip in Airshire was very pleasant. The countryside was surprisingly beautiful, shame that many tourists do not travel in the Scottish lowlands. The guide was excellent, he obviously loves and knows the local history and culture. He even included appropriate songs where to discribe his storytelling. Wonderful! I recomend it!

The tour was well organized and afforded an enjoyable visit to the Burns museum and surroundings, as well as Culzean Castlein all a most rewarding trip in the attractive Scottish countryside. The guide was helpful and the pacing of the tour was goodall the results of the company's long experience with tourism. Very warmly recommended.

Such a beautiful area of Scotland! Our tour guide was knowledgeable, funny, and played us some fantastic music. Will have to return, as one day is not enough to fully enjoy the bounty of Ayrshire!

We really enjoyed this tour and all the interesting places we visited on it. Culzean Castle grounds are beautiful - definitely go down to the beach and walk around to the castle from that direction.

Enjoyed the trip. Culzean Castle grounds are quite impressive! A longer stay in Burns Country would have been nice, this bit felt a little rushed. Also, unfortunately the Burns Gardens were under renovations so not as impressive as my visit the previous year. All in all a nice day!
