Oban and the West Highlands Day Trip from Glasgow

Glasgow, United Kingdom

Escape the city bustle of Glasgow, and head west on the Oban and West Highlands Day Trip! This breathtaking area of Scotland contains coastlines, moorlands and mountains which encompass the dramatic beauty of the West Highlands. Explore the cosy, wee villages of Oban, Luss and Inveraray and take in the scenery with friendly Highland hospitality from your guide!

Starting from a central Glasgow location, your tour departs early to beat the traffic on the drive west. You'll head to the first stop at the conservation village of Luss, which sits on the western shores of Loch Lomond - Britain's largest freshwater loch. Take time to relax and enjoy the scenery before your tour continues into the heart of the Highlands.

Pass the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Kilchum Castle on the shores of Loch Awe, and hear tales of the Campbell Clan who once claimed the land as a stronghold. Loch Awe also follows the Pass of Brander, where Robert the Bruce (Scotland's heroic King) fought many a fierce battle in bygone times.

Reaching the Victorian seaside town of Oban in the early afternoon, take the chance to sample the freshest seafood from the town named as the Scottish Seafood Capital! Walk off your lunch with a stroll over to McCaig's Tower, the magnificent granite folly which has dominated the town's skyline since 1895. Don't be put-off by the long climb to the top! You'll be rewarded by spectacular views across the sea to the Isle of Mull.

On the return route back to Glasgow, there will be a stop in Inverarary, a quaint village which lines the shores of Loch Fyne - characterized by it's pretty white-washed houses. Spend time at leisure and try some of the town's home-made sweets before heading back to Glasgow, passing Scottish countryside steeped in myth and legend.

Great day trip before our 10 day tour of the British Isles started. Our guide was most passionate about his home and shared some great history and insight into the culture and political climate of Scotland.

Fergus, our driver and tour guide, was great source of information about Scottish history and culture._br/_ We really enjoyed the sights along the trip and Oban was great quaint, little town with excellent seafood options._br/_ Do not miss the distillery in there and we wish we had couple of hours more to explore ferryboat rides that were available._br/_ Highly recommended!

The guide John was very good, the programme was good too, I'm only missing a little more time in Oban, because there wasn't time enough to go to the tower and enjoy the beautiful view we went for. If we knew that we could go in the tower and then take a meal in box, we would have chosen that possibility.

This tour was nice and we saw some beautiful places. But I think it crams too much into it, you don't get any real time anywhere. But if you really don't mind jamming things in then this is a good one.

This is a great trip to get a full and varied look at Scotlands beautiful lakes, highlands, castles and coast. In between stops, John, the Highland Experience mini-bus driver, kept the group entertained with a nice mix of humor, history and trivia. Inveraray Castle is an option well worth taking seniors ask for the concession price!. The 13th Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell, and his family still live in the castle, but a wing is open to the public. Rooms are beautifully decorated and a testament to lavish living as well as pride of heritage. Theres some lovely tucked away sights along the route most travelers would likely miss on their own: Falls of Falloch, Castle Kilchurn and St. Conans Kirk are such standouts. Oban on the west coast is a nice little town and good for wandering through shops or getting something to eat. The weather was not suitable for a walk up to McCaig's Tower, but on a sunny day it would have been nice to take in the views of Isle of Mull and the harbor from there. Viator has again partnered with an excellent local tour group to provide a wonderful day I highly recommend both.

This day trip was amazing value, our driver John was so knowledgeable about the History, Flora and Fauna. I so enjoyed his genuine love and enthusiasm for the History and landscape of Scotland.

Was ok, spent most of the time riding in bus and short time at destinations, we did have traffic problems. Was decent though.

At the beginning of the tour, it was not impressive. But it just got better and better. Now I understand that Scotland has such rugged beauty with quite some wilderness and long history. Our tour guide John was quite efficient and also a good story teller. I learned a lot about the Scottish history and also some weird stories from him. Oban was a lovely town. I wish we had a bit more time there. Kilchurn castle looked so mysterious from the distance. As I am a big fan of Downton Abbey, I would highly recommend to spend some extra money to visit the Inveraray Castle, where they made Downton Abbey Christmas 2012 episode. It was a long drive but with frequent breaks. My Scottish colleague told me to visit Oban and west part of Scotland. Listen to the locals!

Oban was wonderful if only for the FOOD! Fresh seafood on the wharf, eaten standing up in the rain was an added laugh and a great experience of a lifetime! Great castles/palaces/stately homes too! Not to be missed no matter what the weather though the sun did shine throughout the day highlighting the massive expanse of Scottish scenery. A the the driver as well whose name I have sadly forgotten since it was quite a while ago. My first experience at rating the tour was when we first arrived home but somehow it never got posted and I have been too busy since to try again. But with careful prodding from Viator, I am trying once again.

Slightly strange tour. My friend and I boarded in Glasgow- we weren't aware it called at Edinburgh first. As a result we were the very last on the bus and could not sit together despite getting to our boarding point half an hour early in naive hopefulness. Our guide, Michael, was friendly but his stories and historical events were difficult to follow and he did seem to get historical names mixed up occasionally. Oban was cute, but not exactly the picturesque town we had imagined! Good number of stops on the trip and Michael did make a big effort to find us excellent photo opportunities! Good value for money.

This is a wonderful use of time when in Scotland, one I can't recommend high enough. You have to see this country anyway you can, and their vans are a very comfortable way. The itinerary was thorough and the guide's spiel is informative, to say the least. The only knock on the trip was the soundtrack of Scottish music played here and there. Quiet contemplation would have been as nice if not nicer.

Michael was our driver and guide on the Oban and Western Highlands day tour. He is engaging, eloquent, knowledgeable and entertaining. He is the best tour guide we have had to date. The coach was clean and comfortable and the tour was well organized. Great value for the price. A terrific way to see the beautiful countryside of the western highlands and learn the history.

Nice trip and interesting. The guide michael was hard to understand mostly because the people sitting behind us were talking loudly despite our pleas to talk quietly. Enjoyed the castles and Oban. It was really a full day.

This was a great tour led by Fergus. We got to see many places and were given just the right amount of time to spend in these places. Of course, now that I've seen them and heard some history about them, I will be returning some day in the future to visit again. Fergus was very knowledgable and friendly and a lot of fun.

Fantastic. The driver was very informative and fun. Beautiful scenery, good stops with plenty of time to see some highlights of that particular area. Definitely recommend. Only downfall would be the directions on the meeting point. The information from Viator says to meet at the Tourist information centre ... which I went to, but it wasn't the location, I then had to run about 2kms to the bus stop where they were waiting for me. Made it extremely stressful by giving the wrong directions on the meeting place.

This is a great tour! We loved our guide. He was interesting and informative. He told us stories and about the history of Scotland as we traveled between stops. We never felt rushed and always had plenty of time to explore and take photos. The bus was also comfortable and in great condition. We would definitely recommend this tour!

A power-packed day full of beautiful and diverse scenery with ample time to stop and enjoy every stop. Our guide was amazing! Not only did he prep us with information prior to each stop but he also gave us a complete and detailed history of the fight for Scottish independence while driving!

Brilliant tour knowledgeable tour guide. BUT be aware that Viator has not updated their pick up address and it is more than 2 years out of date. Thia caused us nearly an hours stress and two taxi rides to get to the correct pick up site which at present is an empty lot with no number near the corner of George Street and North Frederick Street. The tour company is unmanned until 8.30am which did not help for a 9.15am pick up so ring and confirm beforehand even though it says that you do not need to confirm to get the correct address. Once we found the pick up address the tour arrived on time. Pity about the rude people who were late getting back after every attraction and therefore caused us to return very late

Knowledgable tour guide with lots of interesting stories on the history of Scotland. Definitely worth doing. Just not enough time in any one place, and you can be held hostage by inconsiderate travelers who decide to do their own thing in their own time, making us all fall behind schedule.

We had a wonderful trip to Oban. The sun shone for us too! Our guide Mark in his swinging kilt was a joy to listen to. Full of facts and great stories of the clans. His historical knowledge was really great, he told us just enough to give a flavour of each place we stopped at and made us want to cram in everything we could. All in all a fantastic day. Well done Mark!!! - MR AND MRS EKE, KENT.

I can't think of anything about this tour which wasn't of a high standard. From the tour guide Alexis to the fish and chips at Nories Fish Shop in Oban to the Highland scenery. Everything left a lasting impression and we were sorry that we didn't have more time to explore the West Highlands.
