Private Miyajma Rickshaw Tour Including Itsukushima Shrine
Hiroshima, Japan
Discover Miyajima Island, also known as 'Island of Gods,' and considered to be one of the most scenic spots in Japan, on this private guided rickshaw tour. Enjoy the traditional Japanese experience of a rickshaw ride, and visit the famed Itsukushima Shrine, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its "floating" red torii gate. This tour can be customized to your preferred length, departure time, and return point.
When making your booking, select which time between 9:30am to 5:30pm you wish to begin. At the designated departure time, meet your local private guide at the Miyajima Ferry Terminal where you board the rickshaw.
As you start pedaling, listen as your guide provides detailed history of Miyajima Island, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan and site of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine is built over water and famous for its floating red torii gate.
Depending on the season, Miyajima is also famous for pink cherry blossoms in the spring and orange maple trees in the fall.
The tours described below are sample routes. They may be customized based on your preferred start and end point, the length of your tour, and your personal points of interests.
30- to 45-Minute Option Cruise right from the ferry terminal to the center of Miyajima's charming townhouse-filled street and old-fashioned shopping arcade. Continuing on the path along the waterfront, enjoy the great view of the large, orange torii in the water, in front of the Itsukushima Shrine. Going behind the shrine to the Momijidani, you are guaranteed to see colorful foliage in the autumn.
1-Hour Option Travel along the most scenic spots and streets of Miyajima. Start in the townhouse-filled street, then take in a waterfront view overlooking the bay with its huge, orange torii and the Itsukushima Shrine. After leaving the crowded tourist area, head for a quiet, secluded temple at the bottom of the mountain. Return to the ferry terminal by passing through the oldest part of town, noted for its stone walls.
2-Hour Option Same as the 1-hour option, plus: retrace your steps through the small shopping arcade and town houses to reach the ferry terminal.
We found this tour amazing. The guide new english and his manner was very pleasant.

We didn't realize that the island was so far from the train station! But well worth the travel time. Our driver Ryomo was fantastic. We did 45 minutes on the rickshaw and then wandered around ourselves....some lovely shopping here.

I am posting this review almost an year later. To the tour/rickshaw guide my apologies. It was one of the highlights of our visit to Japan. One could not have seen Miyajima better in a short time like that. The Island would be lovely to spend a day and walk around, we did not have the time to do so. The temples, countryside the cable car ride and cuisine were great. The only landmass that survived the atomic bomb is very evident looking at the surrounding. We took a boat ride from opposite the memorial park. A 40 min ride to the island and probably the easiest way to get there.

The guides are so enthusiastic and fun throughout the hour long trip. We saw more than we would have without using the rickshaws. They guided us through the nearby shrine at the beginning, up a hill to a beautiful garden ending at the market. I highly recommend.

This was the most fun I've had in the whole trip, although at first I felt a little out of my comfort zone being pulled along, I warmed to the idea of sitting like Madam Muck, and imagined what it must have been like in the past when this mode of transport was the norm. A lovely peaceful way to see the main part of the island and 5pm was a great time as most of the hoards of people had gone, Mayo my guide was informative and funny, I loved how well his leg breaks worked going down hills LOL!!

Time constraints , led us to miss the tour time. Upon turning up 40 minutes late , there was no representative around to speak too. If you are staying in central Hiroshima , allow an hour and a half for travel time. This is not very well stated at time of booking.
