Mekong Delta Discovery Small Group Adventure Tour from Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Travel to the heart of the Mekong Delta on this small group adventure tour from Ho Chi Minh City. You'll board a private longtail boat, experience the diversity of the Mekong waterways first hand as you explore fish farms, exotic fruit farms and dine on traditional Mekong Delta food.

Meet at Saigon Opera House prior to your 8am departure, and set out on your 8-hour tour from Ho Chi Minh City in an air-conditioned coach. After a 2.5-hour ride through the countryside, arrive in My Tho, a former naval base that is now a bustling port city in the Mekong Delta. As the terminus of the Mekong River, which winds through six countries from Tibet to Vietnam, this incredibly fertile region produces approximately half of Vietnam's total agricultural output, and life revolves around the the delta.

Upon arrival into My Tho, board a private long-tail boat for a cruise on the Mekong River. On the boat ride, your local guide delves into the history of the region and steers you to an island with lush tropical gardens. Sample tropical fruit before continuing to another island in the Mekong Delta, where your guide will share stories of the area's cottage industry, coconut candy. Visit a coconut candy factory, where you'll hear the history of the industry and watch how this confection is made.

As you continue your journey along  the river, take the opportunity to stop at local villages and experience more of the traditional lifestyles, culture, and customs of the people who call the Delta their home. Purchase handcrafted souvenirs as you experience the more relaxed pace of the Delta, in stark contrast to the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City.

Transfer from your boat to Xe Loi, a motorized cart that transports you to a bee farm, where you'll transition to a smaller rowing boat that allows you to get deeper into the smaller canals of the Delta.

Sample local Mekong cuisine at the Diem Phuong Restaurant, where lunch is served. After lunch, once again board the air-conditioned coach for the return journey from My Tho to Ho Chi Minh City, where you'll be dropped back off at Saigon Opera House.

Please note: Knees and shoulders must be covered, as the tour visits rural areas.

Excellent tour! They packed in a lot of stops with food, local musicians, multiple modes of transport on water and land. Very good overview of the Mekong Delta area. Our guide Thanh Truong was entertaining and knowledgeable.

This was an enjoyable day , it was a bit more commercial based than I thought with many stops at places that wanted you to buy . The bee farm, the coconut candy, even the first shop where we had musical entertainment had the tip box going around . Having said that though each place was worth visiting . The tea and snacks we received were tasty .The ride in the Tuk Tuks was an adventure, hold on tight . Lunch was delicious. The ride in the Sampan after lunch was the highlight as this felt you were getting The Mekong experience so would have like that to be longer . A good tour if you want a taste of The Mekong life .

Not real setting, too stylized for the tourist. Our guide did a fine job.

The first half was too organized, the tourist trap rest stop for 20 mins ! and the activities mostly seemed to be about getting you to buy a local product. The second half was a lot better, still quite gimmicky but it was fun! The Tuk Tuk ride and the rowing boat were highlights, the food at lunch was also very nice. The guide was sweet and knowledgeable and went out of her way to please. She did speak a lot, so the trip ended up being quite exhausting as you were listing 99 of the time

I LOVED this trip. _br/_ The scenery is spectacular and all the people are so warm and welcoming. I’ve read lots of comments about the drink sellers having attitude but I didn’t experience anything like that. _br/_ Buffet lunch was great with a huge selection of tasty dishes.

This was a great trip. We were picked up from the hotel and took an almost two hour drive through the city and headed south past the rice paddy fields. I could see in the fields what I first thought were little sun shelters, but hen realised that they were graves. The guide explained to us that these were the graves of the ancestors. In some fields there were a lot of them, which showed the generations that had been in that land. We had a bot trip to Unicorn Island where we sampled some of the locally grown fruits, and were treated to some singing by the amateur singers in their native language. It was very beautiful. After a very very bumpy tuk tuk ride we stopped for lunch at a local restaurant in the middle of nowhere it seemed . It was a tradional lunch of fried elephant fish in rice paper rolls and some prawns, it was served to us by some local girls. Then another small sampan trip down the river to the big boat and back to hotel by bus. It was a very interesting trip and apart from the tuk tuk trip, which left me with many bruises on my bottom I would have given it a five.

The guide was wnderful. However, this felt more like a tourist trap than an insight into the rural life of the delta. We live on a lake so the boat ride wasnt any big deal. Having said that, it was impressive to see the how small the factories for candy and chocolate are compared to the US.

This was a very enjoyable tour of the Mekong delta. We visited 3 islands. Got to taste some honey and tea. Visited the coconut candy workshop. Took a vietnamese tuk tuk ride through a village to a restaurant. Lunch was a little disappointing given all the great streetfood we had in Saigon.

This was, without a doubt, the most amazing thing we did in Vietnam. Every stop along the way was super unique. I'd do it again and again! If you can only fit in one tour pick this one!

Our guide Tan was a wealth of knowledge and also had great sense of humor. Our tour started with a trip to the Mekong 9 Dragons with a bit of history on Vietnam and some epic family stories. We learnt about Ancestral Land, Wifi, Honda-Scooters, and even got given the best advise on how to cross a road basically just go straight!

Excellent day. We made several stops before actually boarding the boat on the river. We got to see a traditional vietnamese home and learn about their customs. Lunch was at a lovely outdoor restaurant. If you don't like fish, make mention of it ahead of time so you can choose an alternative. The springrolls were made at the table with deep fried elephant ear fish. Then we had time to relax in the hammock before taking a ride on a tuk tuk. Next we boarded a boat that took us out to the smaller boats so we can go through the smaller channels. Overall it was a fun relaxing day. Be prepared with scunscreen and bug spray

Tour group is small indeed. Guide Nancy is knowledgeable, nice and sweet. Lunch is basic if you are easy with anything goes into your mouth._br/_ Only complaint - the rowing boat ride is too short less than 5 min._br/_ Overall experiences - Passable and satisfactorily.

Our tour guide Linda was very funny and informative, and I loved this tour. It was a perfect chance to leave the busy city for a day and learn more about the countryside of Vietnam. The bus trip was comfortable and the bus itself was very modern and air-conditioned.

The tour delivered as promised, we did get to see several interesting sights - a traditional house, traditional dancing, a coconut candy farm - and our tour guide was very knowledgeable and eager - almost too much! I'd recommend she left more time for discussion between travellers. Given that the tour was only a day long, it did feel rushed and in retrospect, we should have allotted more time to the Mekong Delta although it might have suited the hurried traveller just fine.

Really great tour. Our guide Phuc was really informative and very funny guy. You do visit a honey making bar, coconut factory and fruit farm and you’re not obliged to buy anything. Overall very good experience, especially if you’re short of time!

Great tour with Phuc. It was great to see how many Vietnamese people live and understand their history and culture better. The experience was great being able to float down the Mekong Delta, see coconut candy be made, enjoy local music and fruits and have a great lunch.

Great tour and our guide was great (Tan) _br/_ hoped to see more of the mekong delta from the water. A little too much unnecessary time was spent on land and for buying things.

While the activities covered in the tour were great the time spend at some locations and over concentration on buying opportunities which were of no interest to me was disappointing. The long tail boat, Xe Loi motorised cart and sampan trips were good and the tour guide was knowledgeable and active throughout. I had been looking forward to the lunch restaurant Diem Phuong and having viewed photos and read excellent reviews on the web I do not think that the local one we went to was it, and the food while good was not great.

The first part is too commercial and annoying... the visit if the peasants house, the songs, the honey. After the cocco candies factory visit the day was better: the lunch and the final stroll in the boat was interesting. The guide (Kim) was good but needs to grow professionally yet.

A very enjoyable day out! The tour guide Phuc was great and took us to many places including fishing villages, coconut factory and more! We got to travel in local 'tuk tuk' over the island and cruise through the narrow canals in longboats. Only downside is lunch is very 'seafood' heavy, so not a great selection if you don't eat seafood, otherwise a very enjoyable day out.

Great tour! Long time in the van though. The guide was super accommodating to my friend who was already feeling ill in the car and allowed her to lay down in the seat while still wearing seatbelt which was nice, and made sure to find her a stool to sit wherever we went.

I would not bother doing this tour. One of the allures of the Mekong Delta is to see and experience the floating market. Well, we met our group at 8:00 am and by the time we boarded the bus and were on our way 8:30 for the 1 1/2 hour drive, we were told that the floating market ends at 9:30 because it's too hot after that. That was disappointing. It was nice to see the honey farm and taste some of the honey products, same with the coconut farm, but you weren't really mingling with the natives. We were basically taken to various tourist stops. The cruise along the delta was short, not scenic and not very interesting except for a few floating houses along the way, The savior of the trip was our guide Tan, He was extremely engaging, funny and informative, explaining a lot about the Vietnamese people and their customs. He made the trip worthwhile. My suggestion would be to do some overnight trip to the Delta so you can catch the floating market and get a better feel for that world.

This was a lovely trip to escape the city. Pick up at the Opera House was great._br/_ Phuc is an exceptionally knowledgeable guide with excellent English All went smoothly, and he took care when we were boarding boats and transferring to the islands. The opportunities to eat the fruits and drink the honey tea were outstanding. Recognizing that these were local families trying to make a living made it easier to understand. Lunch with the elephant fish and tamarind sauce were delicious!_br/_ A full 8 hours with great travel companions-5 singles from around the world and one couple-lots of laughs! a really fine day!

Great that the pick up was from the opera house. Mean't that we could get on the road for the good stuff without wasting time picking people up from different hotels. Bus was comfortable and there were only 9 of us on the trip. The guide was really good, attentive, friendly and informative so a very pleasant experience. Great interaction with locals in village and a very nice lunch was served up. Enjoyed the river experience on larger and smaller water craft plus tuk tuk ride. Very reasonably priced and at the end of the day we were really pleased that we had done this trip. I think our guide's name was Throng, sorry but unfortunately lost his card.
