Lantau Island and Giant Buddha Day Trip from Hong Kong

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Embark on a tour of Lantau Island in Hong Kong and visit the Giant Buddha Exhibition Hall at Po Lin (Precious Lotus) Monastery. On this Big Buddha tour with a professional guide, you’ll discover pristine beaches, traditional fishing villages, lush valleys, soaring mountains and spiritual enlightenment. Ride a cable car from Tung Chung with spectacular views of Lantau Island, Ngong Ping Plateau and the South China Sea. Your Lantau Island tour includes round-trip hotel transport, one-way ferry and lunch.

Please note: Cable car will not operate from Jan 1st, 2017 to May 31st, 2017 due to scheduled maintenance, you will be provided coach transfer from Nong Ping Village down to Tung Chung during this period.

Your Lantau Island tour in Hong Kong begins with hotel pickup, followed by an express ferry ride across Hong Kong Harbour. When you reach Lantau Island with your guide, board a coach to beautiful Cheung Sha Beach – Hong Kong's longest beach. From here, head to the unique Tai O fishing village, where you’ll find local fishermen's homes built on stilts.

Your scenic coach journey will take you up a winding mountain road to Ngong Ping Plateau, where the majestic Tian Tan Buddha sits near the Po Lin Monastery. Popularly known as the Big Buddha or Giant Buddha, the statue reaches more than 111 feet (34 meters) high, making it the world's largest seated, outdoor bronze Buddha.

You'll have ample time to enjoy a guided Big Buddha tour, including the colorful Po Lin Monastery and its Giant Buddha Exhibition Hall. A short walk away is the Wisdom Path, where an ancient prayer is inscribed on a series of wooden columns set in a figure eight to signify infinity.

Enjoy a traditional Buddhist vegetarian meal at the monastery, followed by an optional visit to the culturally themed Ngong Ping Village, which offers a range of regional street performances, shows and demonstrations, as well as multimedia attractions.

Your tour of Lantau Island in Hong Kong concludes with a descent down the mountain aboard the Ngong Ping 360 sky rail cable car to the Ngong Ping Plateau – a 3-mile (5.7 km) distance away. This 25-minute journey across Tung Chung Bay offers breathtaking panoramic views of the South China Sea along with the awe-inspiring Giant Buddha nestled in the lush mountains landscape.

From Tung Chung Village, return to Kowloon or Hong Kong Island by coach.

Please note:

  • This tour is NOT recommended for elderly or disabled passengers due to restricted access on and off the ferryboat and Ngong Ping cable car. (Cable car subject to operational and weather conditions)

The day we were there was cold and windy, but the tour guide did a great job guiding us through the various stops. It was amazing to see this Buddha, the monastary and the tram ride back to Hong Kong was fun!!

Great day, tour guide was great, but they will ask for a tip as well. The day was really good the only thing I would probably change was the beach stop I would probably just make that a photo stop and straight back on the bus and add the time to the Buddha stop to have more time after lunch to look at the village.

Great tour. I wish we had more time at the Buddha vs. the beach or the fishing village. Wish we could have walked up the stairs to the Buddha. I am sure others loved the fact that we got dropped off. Some of the trip felt a bit rushed, specially at the end. I can recommend this tour though.

Everything ran smoothly. The fishing village was interesting, and we definitely were given a close viewing of their lives. The area around the Buddha was beautiful. The meal was fantastic!! And the cable car was a memory not to be forgotten any time soon - spectacular!!

What a great day tour to Lantau Island from Have ng Kong. The visit to the fishing village was amazing. Our tour guide was great, meeting us at the ferry in Hong Kong. Only problem was at the end when we got the gondola to the bottom. No one seemed to be there to organise our bus trip back to Hong Kong. Some had stickers for Grayline but we had no identification and the bus driver couldnt understand that we were to go on the bus. Finally a guide turned up but not good. We and others in the group thought we were left without transport. Overall a great day.

This tour was fine, but involved a LOT of driving. The majority of the tour was spent on the road, but the stops were interesting and worth it.

Giant Buddha is BIG. We started with a bus ride to the ferry terminal, then a ferry to Lantou, and another bus across the island to Tai O fishing village. Our walk and boat tour through Tai O was fascinating. The sights, the smells, the shops, the homes, the tiny walking streets - wow - a different world. Then we went to see Buddha, and the monastery. Buddha is big, the monastery features lots of gold, and the veg lunch was excellent I'm not veg. The 5.7 Km gondola ride back to the airport town was awesome. The bus ride back to HG less so. All in all, a great day.

A great tour, very enjoyable, with a fantastic guide. The whole day ran smoothly, and we covered a lot including the fishing village, the Great Buddha and the cable car ride. The cable car ride was a perfect finish to the day, with beautiful views over the airport and land. Would recommend this tour.

While maybe not the tours fault I didnt have a great day. While the guide handled the logistics well she didnt really provide much commentary. It would have been nice to learn a bit more about what we were seeing. The stop at the beach was pointless, the buddha was so fogged in you couldnt really see it and the ride down on the tram was cold with no views at all since the fog was so heavy. The shopping at the Giant Buddha site was all cheap souvenirs so we didnt need over an hour to explore. I also would not suggest this for any one that has trouble with motion sickness - the bus ride left me completely nauseous and I dont normally have trouble with buses. I enjoyed seeing the fishing village but with no commentary I didnt learn much about it - she didnt even mention the huge fire that wiped out most of the village a few years ago.

A must do tour! Excellent guide. I will just recommend a bit more time at the actual Buddha, as the time inside was very quick.

Tour was good. Transportation to the ferry was punctual. Well organized. Sights and scenery were good. I didn't care for the visit to the Sha beach, it didn't look inviting at all. Also, at arrival time at the Big Buddha the sun was on the back of the statue which doesn't help with frontal pictures. A good day for all, even with the bit of rain we had during some parts of the day.

The Tour was very well organised and Lantau Island provides a very different perspective of Hong Kong - well worth the day trip. The fishing village in many ways is a step back in time. The Tian Tan Buddha and the Temple are both amazing. It is interesting that both have been relatively recently constructed - the Buddha just 28 years ago. The Temple - full of gold is incredible - not necessarily what one expects to see in a temple. We were told that the Temple brings pilgrims from all over the world. Our tour guide Ben was a wealth of information - you have to keep up to hear it all. The vegetarian lunch was amazing and showcases good vegetarian cooking - an amazing array of food even those in our group initially lacking enthusiasm for vegetarian food loved it. This tour is well worth it smaller buses do the hotel pick-ups and join up with one large bus before heading for the ferry.

Absolutely wonderful!! We were in HK for thanksgiving and found this lovely tour. The guide , i believe her name was Krystal, was a joy! The fishing village was a humbling yet beautiful area of the world to Experience. The big Buddha was fun, cable car had beautiful sights. The food was excellent.

Excellent tour really enjoyed it and we had a great guide with Rene if I remember correctly. Had a ferry ride to the island and then bussed it up to the Giant Buddha and we didn't have to climb the steps as entered from the top but you can climb if you wish. I really enjoyed the meal at the monastery basically fried rice, fried tofu and sautéed vegetables and spring rolls and chicken and sweet corn soup all washed down with Jasmine tea. Very fresh but there are other eating spots to eat if you wish at your own cost, although why travel if you don't want to try something different. Went to a traditional fishing village which was lovely to see the locals and learn a bit of history and had a boat ride around the area.hotel pick ups a bonus too. cable car ride was fun . Toilets on route ok and portables at the Buddha but nicer ones in the cable car area.

Really enjoyed this trip and Ben Big Ben was an excellent host with a very clear and soothing voice._br/_ Pick up from hotel on time and although a few other pick ups you have to accept that Hong Kong traffic is horrendous arrived in good time for the ferry. The crossing was fairly smooth and the visits to the beach and fishing village well timed, Ben kept the group moving at a steady pace._br/_ We were fortunate that weather was clear and the views of the Buddha excellent the coach took us to the top area so if you really want to climb the steps you have free time after !!!_br/_ The vegetarian meal was very good we are not vegies and filling, a pot of tea was included across a table of ten however additional water would have been appreciated._br/_ The ride down in the cable carry is brill you do have the option to upgrade to the glass bottom which we did and thought was worth the extra 5_br/_ Coach back to hotel waiting at end of cable car, overall time 8 am to 4.30 / 5 pm depending on drop off point

This was a great tour and a great day. Our guide, Crystal, was very informative and very funny! There was so much packed into this tour that it's hard to pick out my favorite part. The Giant Buddha was really something--very moving. The vegan lunch in the monastery was one of the best meals we've had in Hong Kong. Who needs meat? The cable car ride down from the village next to the Giant Buddha was also great. This was the best tour in Hong Kong that we had.

Fantastic day out._br/_ Picked up on time ferry to lanai island lovely knowledgeable guide. Very interesting walk round old fishing village then to Buddah. We were left to our own devices to walk around take photos etc until meeting at monastery for lunch which was so much better than being guided.

Our tour guy was not great. He didn't provide much details on the history. He also needed a microphone so it when he did talk, you couldn't hear him. He would give us free time but give us vague instructions where to meet back up which caused lots of confusion. The tour overall was cool, although there were a lot of transport transfers so be prepared for that.

A full day tour. Ben, our guide was great, kept us on time and informed. Keep in mind there is a lot of travelinga ferry, 3 buses. The lunch provided was inedible and the last hired driver, who spoke no English took us on a not wanted joyride as he forgot our hotels assigned and didnt understand as we spent an additional 45 min trying to tell him our hotels! Seeing the big Buddha, of course was the highlight.

Great tour! A MUST! Pick up was on time. Ferry ride to Lantau island pretty quick. Stopped at a beach for some pics, learned about history of the island and got to see Tai O fishing village. Took a sanpan to see the houses on stilts. Amazing to see how the people live there. Then the moment of awesomeness when you come face to face with the Giant Buddha. WOW! It's grandeur just blows you away! The views from the Buddha looking out at the surrounding area was breathless. Po Lin Monastery very humbling and the vegetarian lunch at the monastery was just absolutely the best tasting food even though it was all veggies, there was also fried rice. I'm not a total vegan or anything but did enjoy those dishes they had for us. YUM! After lunch, had time to walk around the Ngong Ping Village which has a bunch of shops for souvenirs. Then to culminate the tour, a ride aboard the Ngong Ping 360 sky rail cable car to the Ngong Ping Plateau which takes 25 minutes. But soak up the views! Spectacular!! Very highly recommended!

This tour was everything I asked for plus more!_br/_ The beginning and end were a little rushed because they had a lot of pickups from different areas, but once we got to Lantau Island we had a blast! There isn’t much time for shopping/gifts at the Giant Buddha unless you skip lunch. A must do in HK!

Very good tour. Our guide was excellent. We saw quite a bit of the island, stopping at a beach, the monastery, the Buddha and had free time as well. Only thing that I didn't like was that we had to go around and pick up other people before the tour.

The transportation, guide, sites, and overall experience were excellent. My one complaint would be that at times we simply ran very short on time and it felt rushed, but do not hesitate to purchase this wonderful experience.
