Applecross Peninsula Day Trip from Inverness

Inverness, United Kingdom

Visit the land that time forgot – the magnificent Applecross Peninsula – on Scotland’s wonderfully windswept west coast. Remote and isolated, yet only a couple hours’ drive from Inverness, the area boasts dramatic Highland scenery and an abundance of wildlife. Travel over the steep Bealach nam Ba pass, spend time at leisure in Applecross village and head through Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve on this must-do day trip from Inverness!

Set off from Inverness by luxury minibus and drive to the dramatic Applecross Peninsula, passing a scenic stretch of land known as the Black Isle. The journey takes a couple of hours, so you’ll stop on the way in the charismatic village of Lochcarron – one of the gems of the northwest highlands –to take a stroll around and explore.

Continue on to Arndarroch village for breathtaking views of Loch Kishorn, and then climb the steep Bealach nam Ba (Pass of the Cattle) – Britain’s third highest road – in your minibus. Reaching 2,000 feet (610 meters) high, the summit of the pass boasts incredible views over to the Isle of Skye.

At the heart of Applecross Peninsula is the beautiful village of Applecross, located on a sweeping bay. Here you’ll have time to spend at leisure; perhaps get some lunch, enjoy the spectacular seascape or learn about Highland history at the Applecross Heritage Centre (lunch and entrance fees at own expense). Wildlife is plentiful in the Applecross area, so watch out for red deer, otters and pine martens – one of the rarest British mammals.

After discovering Applecross’s charms, meet your expert guide back on board your minibus for a drive along the banks of Loch Torridon to the town of Shieldaig, where you can walk around. Travel on through Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve – Britain’s oldest – where you can expect to see golden eagles soaring above the ancient pine woods.

Return to Inverness, passing the picturesque Highland villages of Kinlochewe and Achnasheen. You’ll arrive back in Inverness in the early evening.

This is absolutely amazing day trip. The best of the ones I did while in Inverness - we did not have to cover huge distances, the party was not huge, we had a guide and a driver who were just fab._br/_ The scenery is fantastic, if you are into mountain landscapes of course - I am. _br/_ We were told we were lucky with the weather, and seeing Isle of Skye, Outer Hebrides and other smaller islands was not a problem. _br/_ One of the highest located paved roads in the UK Applecross pass Bealach na Ba is gorgeus, I must admit. It's something I always forget about Scottish mountains. They don't seem very high, but then you must remember you start your journey from the sea level._br/_ The only downsize was a guy in front of me who was taking pictures all the time and so it was his hand with a camera in it that obstructed my view a little bit _br/_ Thanks to Vicky and Kevin for being such fantastic guides

Our driver and guide was very good. Gave us a good history lesson. We made numerous stops along the way to do photo shoots or take care of needs. The scenery was beautiful along the way and I was glad the driver was doing the driving over the cattle pass._br/_ Lunch was a delight at the Walled Garden. Fish and Chips excellent._br/_ The only negative it was a long day. 930 am to 630pm.

I cannot rave enough about our Tour guide! I believe his name was Michael and he was so informative and friendly the entire day. This tour was by far the highlight of my vacation with stunning scenery and so many opportunities to stop and take photos and ask questions. If I ever go back to the area I would definitely take this tour again!

Another fantastic tour, which I would definitely recommend. Malcolm was an excellent tour guide, with a wonderful mix of humour, history, and information about the region, in a relaxed and approachable manner. He made lots of stops, which was great, as the scenery was amazing and everyone wanted to take lots of photos. The tour group was a nice size - about 12 people - with a good mix of people. I really enjoyed this day.

Guide was very experienced with the rd to Applecross. Two things can be improved though- less time could be spent lounging at cafes and more time taking pictures or stopping at good spots for photography. Guide also needs to control the things he say as he tends to be abit careless with his words.

Scenery was breathtaking. Morning stop for tea/scones not good. They were not prepared for a bus of about 20 people. Tour guide bonded too much with one passenger and forgot to detail what we were seeing.

If you have only one day to see landscapes of western Scotland you should consider taking this tour over the Skye trip. Skye needs more time, but you can cover a lot of Applecross in a day and the scenary is fantastic! There are no castles on this trip but the wet desert landscape more than makes up for it. Here one really has a chance to experience the desolation of the Scottish Highlands. The mountains are rugged and the terrain is generally steep - here the vistas overwhelm even the most wide angle of lenses._br/_ Our guide, Skye, really knew her geology and plants, which was a bit of a treat as most trips are culturally based.
