Isle of Skye Day Trip from Inverness

Inverness, United Kingdom

Explore the romantic Isle of Skye on a full-day trip from Inverness. Taking in spectacular Highland scenery, your tour passes Loch Ness and the ruins of Eilean Donan Castle before reaching Skye, where gnarly mountain peaks and hillsides swathed in purple heather are framed by soft, sandy beaches. Enjoy lunch in Broadford and walks around Loch Slappin and the Strathaird Peninsula. Before returning to Inverness, pass the gorgeous little island of Eilean Ban.

Leave Inverness and head southwest to Loch Ness, the legendary freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands. As you travel by minibus along the shore-side road, your expert guide will talk you through the myth of ‘Nessie’ – the fabled Loch Ness Monster. Stop at the wee village of Invermoriston to stretch your legs and see the delightful Thomas Telford Bridge.

Continue traveling through pretty glens like Glen Moriston, and then pass alongside the Five Sisters mountain range. Stop outside Eilean Donan Castle to admire its incredibly picturesque ruins sprawled across the banks of three spectacular lochs.

At the Kyle of Lochalsh, cross the famous Skye Bridge to reach the Isle of Skye itself. First stop is at the island’s second-largest settlement, Broadford, where you’ll visit a charming local inn for lunch (own expense). Then your tour of this beautiful island begins! Following the coastal road to Glen Suardal, pass the iconic Red Cuillin Hills and enjoy sweeping views of pretty Bla Bheinn (Blaven Mountain) from the village of Torrin.

Take a stroll with your guide around the banks of Loch Slappin – one of Scotland’s most photographed lochs. As you amble around this picturesque spot, your guide will indulge you in the local pastime of beachcombing – scouting the shores for interesting rocks and fossils. After walking along the shores, enjoy a steep walk up Strathaird Peninsula to reach the tiny village of Egol. Spend time at leisure here, soaking up the stunning sea views across to Rum.

Your journey back passes the little island of Eilean Ban, home to a large colony of otters and a wealth of wildlife. The famous British writer Gavin Maxwell calls Eilean Ban home, and the wildlife here influenced his best-selling novel, Ring of Bright Water. Head back to Inverness via the village of Achnasheen and the dramatic Black Isle, arriving in the early evening.

El guía muy simpático, demostraba mucha pasión por su trabajo estaba muy preparado y era muy muy amable. Lo único que cambiaría son las largar horas de autobús, haría una ruta más corta para evitar todas esas horas.

Went on this tour yesterday and it renewed my faith in coach tours! Having had a bad experience a couple of years ago in Inverness not on a Viator trip I must add this was a far better experience. I was travelling with my elderly mum and we had a brilliant day. Our guide Richard was fantastic. He was very very interesting and funny which made the 10 hour trip fly by. Would certainly recommend this trip and I will most certainly be using again.

This was a highlight, if not the best day, of my recent trip to Scotland. We had a packed bus but Alison was fantastic at keeping us all engaged and laughing and learning about Scottish history! The weather was a little cold and foggy but that just made all the places we saw that much more spectacular and made the photos more beautiful. Its a long day, but worth it because from start to finish there is beautiful scenery. Scotland is truly a stunning country. Thank you Alison for a wonderful day!

A tremendous day! It was bit rainy, but our guide, Chris, made this the most exciting and interesting of all our tours. He's a real master and obviously cares about his work and showing you what's special about his country.

I had such a wonderful time in the Highlands thanks to the tour guide, Chris. Throughout the trip, he gave geographical and historical information about the places or castles we were passing by. Since the day of the tour was sunny, he stopped in many different places for us to take pictures and enjoy the view. I really can not recommend the tour enough. I felt like the money I paid for the tour was low compared to the rich experience of the Highlands I gained.

The road to Skye is stunning, as is the island itself. Our group of five appreciated the humor and excellent information our driver , Kevin, gave us about the area. We had many opportunities to get off the bus and take pictures. The tour was well worth our time and a very good value for all it provided.

Our guide and driver were terrific! The bus was comfortable, everything started as planned, and despite weather and some slowdowns due to traffic, we got to see everything as promised. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to see the Isle of Skye and fantastic countryside.

Allison our guide worked really hard to make the trip fun and memorable. Great sights and commentary and many fun stops that we really enjoyed. I was disappointed that the mini bus was so crowded and my husband had to sit by a strange lady that talked and bugged him all day.

The description on the viator site doesn't do it justice. It was a great day with lots of excellent stops and photo worthy views. The castle was lots of fun and the info and legends provided by the tour guide really added to experience. The only drawback is that there's lots of driving around so you don't actually get to be on Skye that much or see any locations on Skye besides Portree. Chris was a great tour guide and I would recommend it to others.

I was travelling with my wife, mother-in-law and wife's aunt. First thing's first, we did not find it difficult to find the bus stop. When we entered the bus, I was welcome by the tour guide/bus driver: Alison. My first impression of her was the positive one. She was full of energy albeit an older person. As the tour went by, I realised more and more that she was full of knowledge and experience. During the trip she was telling us the 10,000-year Scotland history which was great. Then we did few stops which we played few Scottish traditional games such as throwing-sticks-into-the-river competition, practising simple Scottish dance, etc. The one we remembered the most was the feeding of the hairy bull.

Great way to see the northern parts of Scotland as it is a long drive from Inverness. We saw great views along the way and had opportunities to take pictures. We had lunch in a town on the island which was nice. After lunch we saw the Eilean Donan castle which was fun to see. On the drive back, we saw miles of Loch Ness but did not stop for any pictures and no sightings of Nessie. The only suggestion for improvement would be to have one stop to take pictures of Loch Ness.

Many hours in one of the most beautiful places in Europe. This was a day filled with heather and rolling hills and endless skies. When in Scotland, one simply must see this.

As first time travelers to Scotland not willing to drive and not keen on group tours, my husband and I were a bit squeamish about taking a full day trip. However, from the moment we boarded the bus to the last step off, we were so glad we did. Kevin, our tour guide, was amazing. He was a wealth of information, a relaxed and patient man full of entertaining stories and antidotal tidbits. Scotland is a feast for the eyes stunning shades of green with gorgeous skies. Our journey to the Isle of Skye included a stop at the iconic Eileen Donan Castle where we were able to peruse the castle and grounds at a leisurely pace. Lunch in Portree on Skye was yummy, albeit rushed due to slow traffic on the way. Kevin made many stops on the trip allowing for photo opportunities and to see to our comforts. Our favorite stops were in the Highlands to capture images of the beautiful wildflowers and hillsides. At the end of the trip Kevin gave us recommendations for dining in Inverness. We tried one Hootananny which ended the day with a 5-star rating! Thank you Kevin and Viator.

Wonderful! So beautiful, hundreds of picture opportunities. Our driver/guide Gary was amazing, funny, informative, friendly. Wish we could have ventured further around Skye, you only stop in Portree and only for an hour. Due to traffic issues we stopped at Loch Ness on the way back, and it was getting dark. Didn't actually go to the castle, which I was disappointed in, and only saw it from the road above looking down. But a great trip, long day, but hundreds of beautiful pictures.

I really enjoyed the tour and Kevin was a very knowledgeable guide. I just wish we had a little more time for exploring the little town of Portee and maybe some of the outlands, Portee was beautiful, but the stop was for lunch and if you ate there wasn't time to look and if you looked there was time to eat. I would have loved to see the Fairy Pools. The weather was what I understood is Scottish, clouds hanging low in the morning and quite chilly, some rain and some sunshine. I loved the Elean Donan castle, beautiful. I would gladly do it again.

It wasn't for Gary who's charm, wit and impressive knowledge saved the day - our trip would've been ruined. There's a misleading information on the website informing what sites visitors would see and I was looking forward to seeing Elgol and Glen Coe few other but was told there were no longer a part of the tour. My husband and I came all the way from London on this tour to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary so imagine our disappointment._br/_ Apart from that remaining views were breathtaking especially Five Sisters and Eilean Donan castle._br/_ The tour was well organised, with short photo stops and enough breaks for the hungry tourists. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on the coach and admire Highlands from behind the window.

Enjoyable trip along Loch Ness and Glen Moriston and over the bridge to Skye. Eileen Donna Castle shone out in the sun. Portree was a quaint town with good views. Return passed through spectacular scenery. A good trip to take.

The trip was great. The main focus was on Eilean Donan Castle. As for Isle of Skye, it actually stopped and walked around Portree. However, the way to Isle of Skye already had many stunning views.

Our guide/driver was good, although his information on Scottish History was not accurate. We loved seeing Eileen Donean Castle and our little photographic stops along the way, although the last 3 hours of the tour were not that informative.

This tour was a disappointment. While we loved seeing Eilan Donan Castle and Portree, we feel we missed out on things due to the mismanagement of the tour company. The had cancelled train tickets for people on other tours so we had 3 unscheduled stops in the morning and 2 in the evening. This delayed us significantly and cut down on the amount of time we spent seeing things. We must have run out of time because our tour guide never took us to see the highland cattle, which was a huge disappointment. We also got to spend less than an hour on Portree so no time to get lunch which was part of the itinerary. Had no choice but to grab a snack at the Co-op. Overall, we really wanted to see Isle of Skye and less than an hour in Portree and one stop to take photos of the Black Cullins Mountains didn't cut it.

Guide is engaging, wonderful and informative there is plenty of stops for photos and to explore. My only wish is more time on the isle of Skye exploring rather then in town. I would have like to have seen the fairy pools for example.

This was a very nice tour. I was somewhat confused in the beginning because I didn't understand that when I booked with viator I would be going with Highlands. It took sometime to figure this out at the checkin but they found us.
