Masada and the Dead Sea Day Trip from Jerusalem

Jerusalem, Israel

Discover two of Israel's must-see sights on this memorable day trip from Jerusalem. You'll explore the legendary ruins of Masada and King Herod's palaces, and enjoy a therapeutic visit to the famous Dead Sea. This unforgettable day trip also passes the setting of one of the New Testament's most famous parables, the Good Samaritan.

Your day tour begins with a descent into the Judean desert, a barren wilderness in the heart of the Holy Land. En-route, you will pass the Inn of the Good Samaritan, before ascending by cable car to reach the mountaintop site of Masada. The cliff's remoteness and difficult approach made it a perfect fortress, and it was here that King Herod built two fortified palaces over 2,000 years ago.

After exploring the archeological ruins of Masada with your guide, you will continue to the Dead Sea past the Ein Gedi oasis and the ancient settlement of Qumran. Here you'll have the opportunity to view the many caves where approximately 900 parchment documents of religious significance were discovered - the fabled Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Dead Sea is the next stop, where you'll have approximately two hours to relax on the mineral beach and enjoy the surreal experience of floating in the salt-rich water, 400m (1,312 ft) below sea level! Don't miss the chance to have a mud bath in the world's richest source of natural salts. You will also have the opportunity to purchase Dead Sea skin care products at duty-free prices from the famous Ahava laboratory.

The drive back to Jerusalem along the Old Roman road which links Jerusalem and Jericho, and see Jericho from the distance.

Combining ancient and natural wonders, Israel's top day trip is not to be missed!

This was an excellent day trip to Masada and the Dead Sea. The tour guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Time was allotted well and we did not feel rushed or bored. The only reason I didn't give it 5 starts was that I had thought I was booking a large coach bus (the kind that seats about two dozen and has a toilet at the back) and instead it was a small bus that seated about a dozen. The bus was comfortably air-conditioned and had USB power sockets, however, as I get car sick, I prefer a larger coach with bathroom facilities.

We’ll run tour from pick- up to drop-off. Definitely recommend and would use again. Our guide explained everything including history of Masada, sites from windows as we drove, politics of the region without being political, and even best practices for preparing for the Dead Sea experience. We made two stops that weren’t advertised but added to the day: a sea level marker on the side of the road and the Ahava shop. Van was well air-conditioned and even had WiFi. We were a multi - generational group of six and all were very satisfied!

This was a great trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and you could tell he really cared about the history. This is a longer trip and at times we felt rushed — we moved from station to station at Masada with little to no time to take pictures in-between. I would’ve preferred more time at the Dead Sea and less at Masada but that was just my personal preference. Again, the guide more than made up for any shortcomings.

The guide was knowledgeable but the group was large. He forgot us on the way to deliver the tour members to their hotels so we sat on the bus for a very long time while they had to drive back around to drop us off. It made for a very long day.

The tour was absolutely worth it. The guide, Dan Porges, told us with great passion about Israel, the past and the present. We learned a lot!

We enjoyed a wonderful day on Massada and a swim in the Dead Sea. Our guide was excellent, witty and very informative. I was picked up on time at the hotel and dropped off there again. I would most definately recommend this trip.

It was suppose to be an English tour, but the guide was mixing between French and English. He was giving short information on both Languages insted of having av dialog With the Group. This was disturbing and gave a feeling that we missed out on information that could have been given. But the guide was friendly and service minded.

Travel company B.H.needs to reconfirm hotel pick ups by email. Seemed disorganized and had to call to remind them to collect me. They sent a taxi. Other than that, trip was okay.

This tour was amazing because of the tour guide. He was able to eloquently describe the sites and histories when traveling to and from the sites, and while touring the sites. He embraced all of the touring group and answered all questions and provided rich histories of each site. This was the BEST Viator tor that I have been on. Kudos to this exceptional Tour Guide !

Excellent tour but would recommend not going in the middle of the summer. If you have to go in the summer, bring an umbrella as there are limited places to stand in shade. I was the only one with an umbrella been to Masada before so knew shade was limited.

This was a wonderful tour, with a tour guide and bus driver anxious to please, ready to stop for a surprise appearance of wildlife. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about both Masada and the Dead Sea, and location of where the Dead Sea scrolls were found. And you cant beat the site and views from Masada. I was so looking forward to this tour, excited about going into the Dead Sea water at Kalia Beach and wasnt remotely disappointed. FABULOUS day!

This was a great tour - however - be prepared for going to the Dead Sea. The beach that is on this trip the bathrooms and showers are not clean. Pack bottles of water to drink as well. It’s easy to get dehydrated at Masada and water is not cheap to buy. The tour guide was fabulous.

The tour has its ups and downs. Masada is a great site to visit and the time spent there during the trip is valuable. But the Dead Sea stop is too long and boring, especially in the winter time. Too much time is wasted in stops at shopping sites. And the information given by the tour guide is often vague.

Amazing tour only drawback is that we got to the Dead Sea a bit late in the evening and got limited time to enjoy it....but all in all an awesome experience!

Very informative with stunning views along the way and at Masada and the Dead sea. Only downside was the hard sell for Dead Sea cosmetic products and would liked to have had more free time to roam at Masada. Still, it was a great escape ftom Jerusalem for a day. I had been to Masada/Dead Sea 35 years before and it was amazing to see the difference in both.

Fantastic day! Surely a highlight of our trip. Dan our guide, shared so much about the history of Masada. The Dead Sea was an experience everyone should have. Brilliant! Well organised tour.

Great tour. Our tour guide Uri and driver Salakh were very accomodating. The camel ride was the highlight. Make sure to eat breakfast and bring snacks, slippers, swimsuit and towel if you don’t want to buy or rent. Make sure to ask if you stay on the same bus or transfer.

What a great trip!! We were able to see historic site and also swim in the Dead sea! There are places to change to bathing suit and you can have about 1.5 to get this Dead sea experience. Recommend this one

Excellent full day trip to Masada and Dead Sea. Picking up all the people from different locations in Jerusalem took about 45-60 minutes, which seemed to long, but we were allowed plenty of time to enjoy both locations. Tour guide was good.

The guide needs to be good, also don't fall into the shopping trap, most of the places suggested by the guides are over priced , and they tend to make a fool of unassuming tourists_br/_ I suggest carry your own food too or snack_br/_ Dead Sea is great but it can get chaotic with too many tourists

The tour was wonderful and informative. The bus ride was wrong but Masada was worth the trip even in the heat!_br/_ I found the Dead Sea portion a bit rushed and the location not what I would have chosen myself. Our next trip to Israel would probably include doing these tours separately . We would select a different location for the Dead Sea Trip.

The tour is very interesting, and the guide was helpful. But working with Viator is a nightmare. They're extraordinarily disorganized, e.g. regularly missing morning pick-ups. We booked five trips with Viator and each time we had a huge problem. They'd forget to pick us up, then send a frantic taxi to get us, as we went careening through the streets in the cab while other the other tourists already on the bus waited for us to arrive. Another day they told us the wrong start time so we missed the tour entirely!

It's a good trip and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Israel. We saw lots of interesting wildlife on the drive and Masada was a great experience definitely hot and sunny, so dress appropriately. I was not as impressed with the Dead Sea spa that we visited which was crowded, worn and not really clean. But the tour operator does a pretty good job and our guide Arnator? was great!

The guide was great ,not his fault Masada was unbearably hot that day 42 degrees which made me lose interest in the guide, all I could think about was getting in the shade. The time allocated at the Dead sea was not sufficient...every thing was so rushed and I am sorry to say the food was terrible there. Overall an experience, but not great.

On the day of the Masada and Dead Sea trip we missed our bus by a few minutes and the Bein Harim Staff were very kind and assisted us with joining our group at the next pickup location. The tour itself was very inspiring, our guide was very knowledgeable and his presentation at Masada was very touching. We were able to see where the dead sea scrolls were found in Qumran and also take the cable car up to Masada. Also the dead sea experience was very interesting. I would recommend this tour.

Overall a good tour. Our guide Youvel was good. The food at Masada was OK - it was a buffet with a choice of hot meals or salads. Not sure why but we ended up being fairly rushed at the Dead Sea and were only given 30 minutes at the site. This was rushed and we were kicked off the beach as it was closing time. Would have like longer time there to have a more relaxed experience. Masada itself is an amazing site and well worth the trip!

Climbing Masada at sunrise rocked. It's the best time to climb it, unless you want to do the cable car, as its nice and cool. It was a bit of a hard climb if you're not in the best shape, it took about an hour and half for me to make it but I stopped often definitely doable. The view when the sun rose was incredible! The Dead Sea stop was fun, in my opinion the Ein Gedi stop wasnt really worth it. Also, note this is more a chauffeur then it is a tour as it is self guided at every stop and the only included ticket is for the Dead Sea, all others you must pay for. We didn't even really get the history of the place from the driver between stops.

Not a bad tour. We had 40 people on the tour so that made it a little difficult to things moving. Masada was excellent and Eli was very knowledgeable. It was too long of a stop at the rest stop where the AHAVA outlet store was located. We've could've used that time at Masada. The Dead Sea was good. We spent 1.5 hours there which I think was plenty of time. I would take the tour again but maybe a smaller group tour.

Masada Dead Sea trip, loved our time in Masada._br/_ Our tour guide was a retired Colonel in the IDF and as such was very knowledgeable of all things Israel. Second generation Israelite, he knew the areas very well. The tour of Masada was very interesting, we stayed together as a group. Dead Sea good.
