Johannesburg Combo: City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off and Soweto Tours

Johannesburg, South Africa

Enjoy a 1- or 2-day Johannesburg combo that includes a City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off tour and a comprehensive minibus tour of Soweto! Enjoy commentary from an onboard guide as you explore the notable area of Soweto, home to Mandela House, Orlando Towers, Kliptown Open Air Museum, FNB Stadium (Soccer City) and more. Use the hop-on hop-off tour ticket to explore the rest of Johannesburg by double-decker bus. See top Johannesburg attractions including Constitution Hill, Gandhi Square and the Apartheid Museum, and hop on and off to explore by foot.

Create your own sightseeing itinerary and explore at your own pace with a 1-day or 2-day ticket that can be used for both a Johannesburg City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off tour with audio commentary and a Soweto minibus tour with an onboard guide.

After first use, your ticket is valid for either one or two days, enabling you to create your own itinerary and sightsee at your own pace. The tours do not have to be taken in a particular order.

Soweto Minibus Tour (2 hours):

Your Soweto tour departs from the Gold Reef City bus stop in central Johannesburg. As you travel by comfortable minibus, enjoy an insightful, narrated tour of this urban area of Johannesburg, one of the city’s largest and most vibrant townships and the site of some of the most pivotal events in South Africa’s history. Listen to the commentary and have your camera ready for several photo stops along the way.

Pass FNB Stadium, which is South Africa’s largest stadium, and learn how Diep Kloof has become an integrated community over the last few decades. See Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, built during World War II and the biggest hospital in the world in 1997. Across the road is Bara Taxi Rank, one of the largest and busiest taxi stands in Johannesburg.

Stop to stretch your legs by Orlando Towers, and then drive past Orlando Stadium, a site said to be the first sports facility that was built for black South Africans in a residential area. Hop off at Hector Pieterson Memorial to learn about the historic event here that catalyzed the Soweto Uprising in 1976.

Walk in the footsteps of South Africa's most beloved leader, Nelson Mandela, at Mandela House, where he and his family lived from 1946 to 1962. Your last stop is Kliptown Open Air Museum in Walter Sisulu Square, where some 3,000 people came together in 1955 to adopt the Freedom Charter. Your tour finishes back at Gold Reef City.

City Sightseeing Johannesburg Hop-On Hop-Off Tour (1.5-hour full-loop duration):
Your ticket includes a Johannesburg city tour by open-top, double-decker bus, which takes you to all the must-see attractions around the city center. Enjoy audio commentary available in 16 languages on the 1.5-hour loop, and hop off at any of the 12 stops to explore by foot. See the Itinerary for a list of hop-on hop-off stops.

Visit top Johannesburg attractions including Constitution Hill, Ghandi Square, the Gold Reef City Theme Park and the Carlton Centre skyscraper, with access to the ‘top of Africa’ viewing platform. Take a walk through the downtown mining district, visit the city’s many museums — including the Workers Museum and Apartheid Museum — or visit the SAB World of Beer.

Great way to see Johannesburg and Soweto all in one day. Only regret was that I didn't have time to go into Nelson Mandela's house.

The tour in Soweto was well done. Good guide and driver. The major issue was the timing and the stop we was told to get the minivan. The tour was supposed to start at 10:05 at the bus stop of Gold Reef City. We went there on time but see no vans. So we asked for help at the gate and then they send us to the Appartheid museum bus stop. Nobody knew where to take that van and when. We decided to wait and asked the Red bus tour driver. He finally give us the appropriate information and the van came 1 hour later, at 11:15. A lot of confusion for us. Please send appropriate direction and schedule when booking.

Well worth the money. The bus was always on time, the assistants on the bus extremely helpful and I felt very safe all the time. The side trip to Soweto was also very pleasant and worth the visit, although there was not enough time to actually go inside Nelson Mandela's house. One would have to pick up the next bus in order to do that. As the hop-on-hop bus goes only in one direction, one needs to truly plan ahead what sights they wish to visit and allow enough time to do it.

Good tour, had a particularly good guide on the shuttle to Soweto Van and a good on-the-ground tour guide in Soweto - we took the option to walk from the stop before to the Mandella home with the local guide.

Outstanding! The red bus tour was great. I loved the narrator and the view from the top of the bus was excellent. The tour of Soweto was good and the tour guide was interesting, but I felt that aspect of the tour lacked a little as our guide left us for a few minutes in the hands of a stranger. We were also nervous about taking a taxi to and from the drop off point. It was 400 rand each way and we had heard scary stories about taxi drivers in Joburg I would pay extra for a ride from the hotel to the drop off point. Over all great!

The Soweto minibus trip was the highlight - it costs extra but is well worth it.

The hop on hop off portion of the tour was pretty good. But the Soweto tour had a detour due to protesting and rioting that resulted in us not be able to see one of the main attractions.

Definitely do the Soweto add-on... we had a FANTASTIC tour guide, whose name I can't pronounce but who enjoyed sharing it with us. Plenty to see and do, and a good way to see Jo'burg in one day. Leave time for the Apartheid Museum for sure.

Hop-on Hop-off door Johannesburg is leuk, maar niet bijzonder. De Sowetotour Tours daarentegen was zeer de moeite waard. Indrukwekkend! De gidsen zijn deskundig en weten veel te vertellen.

Our tour guide was great. Got to see Nelson Mandela's home and Bishop Desmund Tutu's home. Saw how the people of Soweto live.

Good tour but guide needed to know a bit more and give us time to actually go into Mandela's house which would have only taken up a few minutes out of the tour.
