Juneau Shore Excursion: Whale-Watching Adventure

Juneau, United States of America

While in port in Juneau, spend some time on a 48-passenger sightseeing boat spotting humpback whales in the picturesque Auke Bay! Admire the expansive Alaskan mountains in the background on this exciting shore excursion as your guide teaches you about the surrounding marine life. Keep your eyes out for whales leaping out of the water! You may also spot sea lions, harbor seals, porpoises, bald eagles and even bears on shore. You may even see Mendenhall Glacier on a clear day!

While docked in Juneau, head to Auke Bay, where more than 65 humpback whales migrate every year. These beautiful creatures will be the highlight of your 3.5-hour shore excursion as you float around the bay. Additionally, you may also be joined by Auke Bay’s other residents: bald eagles, harbor seals, porpoises and more!

The 48-passenger jet boat is built for sightseeing, featuring extra-large windows and an exterior observation deck – perfect for whale watching! As you cruise around the bay, your captain will announce when whales have been spotted! For an even closer look, you’re welcome to use the complimentary binoculars on board.

Worry-free Shore Excursion:
We will ensure your timely return to the Juneau port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. This was a really good experience though we were told we would be also be heading to an island to see sea lions as well which we did not do.

Even with all the rain it was a great experience. My one suggestion would be to pull closer to the dock for those that are handicapped or need more time to get to the boat. It was a long walk for my mom uses a cane, and I felt like we were holding up the rest of the group.

This excursion and boat is highly recommmended. The naturalist onboard is very knowledgeable and excited about the humpback whales. We had the unique experience of seeing multiple whales working together for food. It was an amazing excursion, and a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch multiple humpback whales move through the water, and even a rare double breach. The captain was knowledgeable about the area and even took us out a little further than usual to ensure we saw the whales. The boat was comfortable with both indoor areas with large windows and a back open-air deck. Beautiful scenery and backdrop with the Mendenhall Glacier and other snow-capped glaciers and mountains. Highly recommended!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Our family had an amazing experience watching humpbacks at close range mostly fluking and Stellar Sea Lions on a rocky bar also at close range! Thanks to Captain Terry and especially Libby who was our guide and naturalist for making it meaningful and special! Highly recommended!!!

Great guide and boat captain! We had fantastic weather and saw a double breaching of whales.....that was literally a once in a lifetime experience. Boat is smooth and very tolerable for those who get seasick.

Best crew - best experience ever! Incredible luck on this date. We saw a pod of Orcas. We saw multiple humpbacks. We even saw a humpback breach! Look at additional reviews on this date - there was a video of it. Simply amazing time! Money well spent - everyone had the best time. Don't bother with the cruise lines. Best deal - best experience! Book this on your own!

FANTASTIC!! There were 27 folks on our boat which was brand spankin' new. We motored quickly to a site where whales had been sited earlier in the day. We were fortunate enough to see a once in a lifetime event--continuous whale bubble netting OMG, the 6-7 whales must have surfaced together 10-12 times. It was amazing and beautiful. The seagulls would fly around in a tight knit circle. The closer they got together and to the water signaled a bubble netting was imminent--it gave you time to get camera ready. I have done whale watching all over the world and this was a first--and probably only--such viewing. Even the Captain and crew were ecstatic. Captain Ben and crew Jerry and Emily S. did a great job. They were very informative. Without a doubt we will take their boat on the next Alaska trip!

A wet cold day @53 degrees and teaming rain welcomed us to Juneau. We were loaded into a yellow school Bus and driver AL gave us a private tour of Juneau. Pointing out numerous Eagles on lamp posts in town,a field with several Eagles just standing there.. and a beach with another large group standing there. A variety of Information, History and Humour as we travelled to Scatter Bay Marina.. There we all huddled under a canopy for some cover from the elements as 2 other groups were getting on separate buses. Our tour was with Alaska Travel Adventures, our Captain Pete with Naturalist plus the only deck crew Amazing Sarah. She ran about our Whale-Watching boat from side -to-side calling out the many Flukes, and sightings we had that day of these magnificent humpbacks. A huge group of Sea Lions entertaining us with their vocalizations and Smell!_br/_ It was very exciting and informative a must see and do. Book your Tour before you leave home using local people and Tour company._br/_ Had a beer before heading back to cruise ship @ The original Alaskan Hotel, Circa 1931..looks just like it did then!

Our captain was Terry and naturalist was Libby, very informative. We saw several whales blowing and surfacing and a few tail flukes. Never was very close, just not in the right place. It was still awesome to see those tails come up. The best part was watching a seal playing in the whales wash. Great trip.

Staff was knowledgeable and courteous. We saw several whales and learned a lot. Comfortable boat and seats with an outdoor deck for better viewing

Unfortunately it was raining that morning and the sea a little choppy. We did see some whales but not close enough to really enjoy the experience. We did see some sea lions though. The guide and boatman were pleasant enough and kept us informed of facts and other information.

We chased and saw many whales. The naturalist on board and the captain worked well together. We had the advantage of only 11 tourists on a boat that held 40 people. Small bottles of water for guests are on board, so you don't have to pack and carry your own.

We saw a one whale in the harbor and then saw a mother and baby whale further out. We were headed back to port, when the mother and and baby suddenly came within 50 feet of our boat. What a sight! They actually startled the captain and he had to turn off the boat engine until they moved further from us. You know you've had a special treat when the captain and naturalist are as in awe of the sight as the guests are. The boat was clean and the crew were very accommodating you can tell they love what they do.

amazing tour. i never get tired of whale watching and this is one of the best i've been on. our guide was knowledgeable about the marine life and environment as well as whales. we even went a little longer because the watching was so good that day. i was surprised at the number of whales we saw as this was the end of the season and many had already started migrating.

This excursion was incredible! This is probably my 7th whale watching excursion, as I've done others in Alaska, Victoria and Mexico. I've never seen so many Orcas in one day. They were everywhere! We didn't know where to look first because pods were all around us. The captain knew exactly where to go and the naturalist on board was excellent. Highly recommend this excursion.

It was really good whale watching adventure. It was a smaller boat which made it easy to find and follow whales. We followed 2 different groups for quite awhile. Other boats were too big with too many people on board.

We went in the late afternoon. There were only 6 people for this tour due to some cancellations. It was great! We saw about 6-8 different humpbacks, but mostly watched a sea lion play with a mother and her calf. It was amazing! Captain Tom and Libby were very knowledgeable. I recommend this tour!

Awesome tour! The tour narrator was great -- very knowledgeable and amusing! The CAPT was great too. We saw plenty of whales! The boat was sized for about 45 people, but there were only 15 passengers, so it was easy to move around quickly as whales were spotted. That didn't matter much since they were plentiful! So glad we did this!! Could not have been better.

This excursion was great! Both the captain and his asst. we're very knowledgable in the area, the whales, etc. They both made sure that the group on board would see whales and we did. Best experience ever for my husband and I.

Orca Enterprises does an awesome job doing whale watching tours in Juneau, Alaska. They are knowledgable, fun and very accommodating, not packing up their boat so that you can't move around. I can't imagine them not finding whales and other sealife. Capt. Larry actually "counts" how long the whales are down after diving and puts you right on the spot when they surface. The boat is very accommodating with great views inside or out--enclosed windows all the way around to keep you warm and wind free. Or you can go out back and up top for even more incredible views. Our highlight of the cruise.

Great trip. The boat was almost brand new and the skipper worked hard talking to us about the whales and their habits and getting as close as safely possible without disturbing them. Lots of pictures of water and one whale flume! However plenty of sightings to enjoy.

I started out pretty upset because the bus was late to pick us up and we ultimately missed the bus. However, they offered to put us on a later outing and it turned out to be better weather than the one we missed. The whale watching was amazing and I loved the small boat and the crew was spectacular. Our driver was so friendly and accommodating! I would definitely recommend these folks with no reservations and would certainly book with them again.

The sightings this day were only ok. There were several Orkas, but not much else._br/_ The boat was new and the people providing the tour did the best they could. Just sorry we didn't see more.

We were so impressed with the beautiful scenery, the calm waters and yes, whales who would follow us around and blow every once in a while. The entire excursion went very smoothly, from pick up to drop off and the enthusiasm of the narrator was infectious. Thank you.

What a great family trip. We set off in a brand new boat. We saw orcas in the harbor and hump backs right away. We even saw a hump back breaching. There were plenty of eagles and seals. The captain and guide were very knowledgeable. It was a great trip for the entire family (our kids are 5 and 8). I would highly recommend it. Viator also had the best price, hands down!
