Eat Like a Local: Kuala Lumpur Hawker Center and Street Food Tour by Night

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Get to know Malaysia in one of the most satisfying ways – on a food-tasting tour! With an enthusiastic guide, drop in to three or more hole-in-the-wall restaurants and food stalls at a Kuala Lumpur hawker center or off-the-beaten-track neighborhood that features the best of Malaysian cuisine. As you enjoy the delicious food and meet friendly locals, your guide will ensure you have an epicurean adventure that can’t be beat. All food tastings – no matter how much food you eat – are included, so come hungry!

After meeting your guide at a central Kuala Lumpur location, easily accessible by the city’s Light Rail Transit, your small-group food tour begins as you board an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive to the KL neighborhood of your guide’s choice (the neighborhood(s) you visit are up to your expert guide and will vary based on the day of the week).

One such neighborhood you may visit is the Bangsar area, which boasts a wide array of food spots like mamak stalls serving traditional Tamil-Muslim cuisine, South Indian banana-leaf restaurants serving delectable treats on a banana leaf, and Malay warungs (small family-owned establishments serving both local and Western snacks). Or, you might head to Petaling Jaya, where you’ll visit a ‘round-the-clock hawker center (open-air food court) to try food from select stalls frequented by locals. Another possible destination is Brickfields, a popular hawker center famous for its South Indian restaurants and Chinese coffee shops serving traditional Chinese fare like dim sum.

No matter where you end up, rest assured that you’ll have a vibrant KL experience. As you follow your guide’s lead, you’ll weave through alleys and around food stalls with ease, knowing your guide will order your food and make sure you taste the most delicious dishes of the day (or night). Try nasi lemak, a fragrant coconut rice with chili paste, anchovies, peanuts and vegetables. Or maybe you’ll have stir-fried Chinese noodles; an assortment of Indian breads with chicken, fish and mutton curry; or Malaysian desserts such as ondeh ondeh, rice balls with palm sugar and coconut shavings. As you are introduced you to local favorites, you’ll experience interesting Malaysian customs with the comfort of a guide who knows all the ins and outs of KL’s food culture.

At the end of the tour, you’ll be driven back to the original meeting point.

This is a very late review as I actually completed it in July last year, but this is quite possibly the best food tour I have ever been on! Even now I dream of Malaysian carrot cake, it was that good! We tried a whole variety of Malaysian foods with roots in Indonesian, Indian and China, and we would never have seen or tasted half of this food if we'd been out alone. The markets and hawker center was amazing and all of the food was prepared in front of us. We were the only two people on our tour and we must have eaten for about 50 people! Do not eat before going on this trip as you need room to try everything. You will not be disappointed! Charlie was very informative too and knew all of the vendors at the market we went to and were all very happy to show us how they were cooking and preparing food and pose for photos! I would go back to Kuala Lumpur just to do this tour again I loved the food that much!

Highly recommend this tour. Farah our guide was the best, her food and cultural knowledge amazing, she was hilarious and we had a lot fun!!_br/_ Good instructions for the meeting place, lots and lots of food and drinks. Anything we liked Farah would order more. Detailed explanations of what we were eating. We drove in Farahs car to 3 significant local food eateries and then she drove us back to out Hotel._br/_ A must do if you're in KL

Wow! Probably the best money I've ever spent on a tour. Charlie, our guide, was so enthusiastic about the food, history and cultures of Malaysia. He showed us three different areas of Kuala Lumpur while taking us to three eating places and then through a street food market while having us taste samples of noodles and fruit. He then drove us to our respective hotels as the metro was closing. This is a must do for visitors of KL and I hope you have Charlie as a guide. You won't regret your decision!_br/_ Beverly Bradley_br/_ USA

Good to get out into the suburbs and be taken to three different eating places to experience Malay, Chinese then Indian food. Ken was an enthusiastic guide and the conversation was stimulating. Gave piece of mind to try new dishes. A great night.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Gerry and Jo were phenomenal hosts! Our group was small and the setting was intimate. It really felt like Gerry and Jo were long time friends who happened to take us out and show us where the locals hang out and eat. It was such an amazing experience! Highly recommended! This food tour is not to miss!

This tour was a gastronomic and really fun experience from beginning to end. Our tour guide Ken was fantastic, with excellent local knowledge and a lovely sense of humour. We visited three food markets - open air Malay and Chinese, and an Indian restaurant. The food and local drinks were divine fragrant goat stew, melt in the mouth skewers of marinated chicken and beef with satay sauce, delicious coconut rice with boiled egg, crunchy peanuts, and spicy sauce wrapped in a banana leaf, local vegetables cooked in scrumptious spices, melt in the mouth banana coconut pancake, spicy dips with roti, and much more! Not only was the food amazing, but the opportunity to eat with the locals in the atmosphere, colour, and buzz of the food markets was a delight in itself. Plus, learning how and what to eat set us up beautifully to enjoy the local cuisine for the rest of our stay in Kuala Lumpar. Being dropped off at our hotel after the tour was much appreciated. Don't miss this!

What a full stomach tour. The guide has taken us to taste the local delicacy of KL the local way. We were 2 traveller al together, if not join the tour, we wouldn't be able to taste all those local food Chinese, Malay, Indian dish all in one night. The tour offer a pick up and drop off service, so we didn't need to walk too much.

This tour attempted to take us to try the different ethnic cuisines around the foodies heaven that is Kuala Lumpur. In the end the experience was somewhat disorganised with the guide spending rather more time talking than getting us around the city. This came to bear particularly when we came to return to our hotel - very late.

Farah is an interesting and knowledgeable tour guide, and she infuses her introduction to the local culture with her own experiences. The food is good, and I especially loved the satay, which was surprisingly the best I have ever tasted. I would have given the tour a full five stars if the price of the tour was a bit lower. But other than that, I highly recommend this tour.

What a wonderful evening with Fala, our food guide, as well as Geraldine and Lois from NZ! Sampled the 3 different main types of cuisine around KL and was given the background and history of Malaysia - had a great laugh, soaked up the atmosphere, ate and drunk lots of different things we wouldn't probably have had the nerve to try on our own - it gave us the confidence to try some other dishes later on. We would thoroughly recommend this trip as a good way to experience Street food.

I would recommend this to anyone interested in all things foodie - we would never have sampled any of the fantastic food without the guidance of the fabulous Charlie. For anyone wondering we ate everything and weren't even the slightest bit sick afterwards so go for it!

Great food and very authentic places. Charles took us in his very comfy van to the different areas. It was a great choice to do a night tour as the temperature was much nicer to go from one place to another and eat outside in the street. Highly recommend it.

A good introduction to the different types of Malaysian food. We were slightly disappointed that it was very much a tour of the Hawker Centers, rather than proper street food around the city. And we found our guide a bit much - she didn't make it a particularly relaxing experience, I think she was just trying a bit too hard to fill all the silences and keep us entertained!

Charles by far provided us with the best experience in Malaysia. From the moment he picked us out of the crowd as the tourist that he would be escorting around to the moment he graciously dropped us off at our hotel instead of the meeting place like we thought. He provided us with the opportunity to taste the culture of Malaysia. I thought as a vegetarian, my experience would be slighted, but he took care to include dishes that I could partake in. He was kind, funny and we felt safe. In addition to being a vegetarian we had our toddler with us who was in a mood. She was being rather unfriendly and if I were the tour guide I would have ignored her. Instead, it appeared that Charles made it his mission to win her over which he did by the end of the night. We enjoyed the food, was never forced to eat or try anything and the food was plentiful. We were forced to wave the white flag as Charles was prepared to keep the food rolling in. We sampled fish head curry, nasi lemak, roti, satay, fried chicken and fried ice cream just to name a few of the dishes. It was truly an experience to remember.

We were quite late setting off as there was some confusion over how many in the group. Transfers between the 4 food locations was by air conditioned mini van. It was great to try so many different foods although the portions at the 1st stop should have been smaller to allow room for the final stop. Farah was an excellent hostess.

Excellent value food tour of food from the three main ethnic groups in Malaysia - Malay, Chinese and Indian. Very much off the beaten track and all the better for it. We visited places and tasted foods which we would not have done otherwise. Farah was an excellent, informative and enthusiastic guide.

The tour leader was informative and funny. Unfortunately the food tasting was too limited, especially in the food market. we were hoping that we can taste more food. Also in the Indian restaurant, we were hoping to get some decent meatand rice for dinner, not only Indian bread and drink. We were kind of disappointed because we were still hungry after the tour ended.

This tour is a wonderful introduction to Malaysian food. Farah was our guide and she did a great job in telling us about the food and customs of the different ethnic meals we sampled. We began with a Malay meal at a popular Malay hawkers covered eating place. We tried food that we would never have considered tasting. It was delicious. From there by car to a semi covered popular Chinese eating place. A meal tasting a variety of their favourite dishes. Finally to a large And busy Indian hawkers eatery for a taste of their curries and naan bread. All the food was tasty. We loved this tour and would recommend it as a must-do.

My husband and I joined this group and had a wonderful time! The various restaurants:_br/_ Malay where the locals were happy to real off our entire Cricket team once they realised we were Australian was a lot of fun, we tried our hand at making a rice dish in a leaf which was also good._br/_ Chinese was at a "Milk Bar" where we tried sting ray which was a first. It was interesting to see the various stall holders at work and the food was delicious. _br/_ Pancakes on route to Indian were delicious, fresh off the hot plate - yum!_br/_ Indian was amazing with curry and rice and then a beautiful cone shaped delicacy which stood about two feet high, just break a piece off and enjoy - wow!_br/_ This tour is a must do, our guide the food and the experience of being out of town in suburbia was interesting and enlightening. It is on our list of things to do when we visit KL again._br/_ Doug and Nancy Tear_br/_ Australia

Would recommend for any one visiting KL who love there food. If you like nice restaurants then this isn't for you.
