Los Haitises National Park Sightseeing Cruise from La Romana
La Romana, Dominican Republic
Discover the natural beauty of Los Haitises National Park, a remote and protected coastal sanctuary that includes dozens of islets on San Lorenzo Bay. Admire the spectacular landscapes of the subtropical forest; travel by boat through mangroves; visit prehistoric caves home to indigenous petroglyphs; and spot a variety of native birds like the frigatebird, royal tern and brown pelican. Hotel transport, lunch and drinks are included.
After hotel pickup in La Romana and Bayahibe, travel with your local guide to Los Haitises National Park, located on San Lorenzo Bay. This protected sanctuary of subtropical forest, including the dozens of rocky island hills called mogotes, is home to a variety of reptiles, crustaceans, virgin vegetation and many species of birds.
When you reach the national park, your first activity is a boat ride down the river to see the magnificent mangroves, both red and white, which are teeming with sea creatures. You’ll also see some of the tiny islands that dot turquoise San Lorenzo Bay, such as Cayo de los Pájaros (Bird Key), known for the frigatebirds and brown pelicans that inhabit it.
The variety of trees and other plant life that make up the dense forest will be explained by your guide. Look for cupey trees, a dominant tree species with horizontal branches full of birds; the wild banyan tree, also known as the shortleaf fig; the tropical almond tree; and flowers such as delicate orchids.
Continue your eco-adventure with a visit to the caverns on Cayo Levantado, which the region’s first inhabitants (who are believed to have possibly predated the indigenous Tainos) marked with petroglyphs. Then cool off with a swim under the waterfalls, relax in a hammock and refuel with lunch and drinks.
Your eco-tour ends with the drive back to La Romana and Bayahibe for hotel drop-off.
I cannot given any rating for this tour. We arrived at La Romana the day before this tour. The hotel staff contacted the company to confirm pickup time. The tour company staff spoke very little English, they apparently had no reference to our booking for this tour. Eventually I was told tour was not going to be offered and I was to book for another date. This was not possible as my remaining days were booked. Word of advice to anyone considering this tour. Don't. I had phoned Viator's international telephone number and was assured they would look into this problem and email me. Received no email. On my return to Australia I phoned Viator in Australia and eventually I was credited the cost for this tour
