Southern Lanzarote Day Trip

Lanzarote, Spain

Get up close and personal to the magical landscapes of southern Lanzarote on an action-packed half-day or full-day tour. Both options include a tour of the lava-sculpted Timanfaya National Park to witness geothermic displays created by heat from the volcanic Fire Mountains. Enjoy an optional camel ride on the volcanic slopes, and visit the La Geria winemaking region to sample the fruity local wine. Upgrade to the full-day tour for trip to the coast where the Janubio salt pans, El Golfo lake and Los Hervideros grottoes await.

Book your half-day or full-day tour and start your experience with a pickup from Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, Puerto Calero or Arrecife meeting points. Then, travel south by air-conditioned coach. Your route and destinations depend on the tour option you choose. Both finish with a hotel drop-off.

Half-Day Tour:
Travel through the village of Uga on your way to Timanfaya National Park. Stop here for an optional camel ride (own expense) and follow the Route of the Volcanoes, twisting round the slopes for grandstand views. Hear about the 18th-century eruptions that formed the surrounding cones and calderas and witness geothermic experiments; you can watch bundles of branches go up in flames within seconds of being tossed into fire pits.

Head out of the park to see the vine-coated fields in the fertile La Geria winemaking region and learn how the island’s crisp and fruity wines, made from the malvasia grapes, are cultivated. Then, head for a winery to sample a glass for yourself! Afterward, rejoin your coach for your return journey.

Full-Day Tour:
After traveling through Uga and Timanfaya National Park to see the geothermal demonstrations, follow the Route of the Volcanoes to see some of the more spectacular lava formations as your guide explains how they were formed by past eruptions.

Enjoy a camel ride (own expense) and continue to the park’s lava-carved west coast where El Golfo, a jewel-green lagoon, awaits. Pause at the Janubio salt pans and see Los Hervideros, an area where waves have hollowed out craggy grottoes into the coastline.

Next, continue to the idyllic winemaking region of La Geria. See the vineyards where Lanzarote’s malvasia grape varietals are grown, and learn how they’re cultivated using the unique climate and landscape. Visit a winery to sample some wine and return to your coach for a drop-off at the meeting point.

The tour was very rushed and the music was terrible on the bus. _br/_ I got very upset at the camel stop._br/_ The camels were all chained up together and being forced to sit in their own urine and poo._br/_ The camels had sores all over their legs.

Review by:   Lucie D,    April 2018 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
We took the full day tour in April. In generally it was ok, but... I expected a little bit more of walking in the national park. Basically it was just walking 50 -100 m from the bus and than back. If I could do it one more time I would choose the half day... the lagoon and the Los Hervideros is nice, but nothing extraordinary this were the first two stops. Then we went a bit more to to the national park, via Janubio salt pans but we did not stop there. In the park we went for the optional camel ride 6 EUR/person, and it was truly the highlight of this tour, it was a real fun and experience, I recommend all to take it. After this the bus took us for the wine tasting, the area was lovely, but there was nothing to do, they offered us a little really very little amount, and only one of the dry or sweet wine sample to taste, there was a souvenir shop and thats it. After this the driver took us for lunch in Yaiza, either you could take a lunch in a local restaurant buffet for 8 EUR, it was goof but again nothing really special or you could take your time there, stop was there around 45 -60 mins. After lunch the guide took us again to follow the Route of the Volcanoes. That was really something extraordinary, unfortunately we could get out only in the area of the restaurant and all the rest of the tour was done as a sightseeing bus. To be honest if the last part would not happen, I would be really disappointed. If I can recommend, I would take only half day tour or some other tour where there is more walking in the park.

Organised from the comfort of my hotel room, online, €16 cheaper than the holiday company organised tour, but exactly the same trip. _br/_ Very knowledgeable guide. Amazing scenic tour of Timanfaya and te lava fields.

We booked for a full day trip. In the Morning, the bus picked us up at 9 o'clock in Costa Teguise. When we finished to pick up every passangers it was 11 o'clock. This is too long. It was really boring. The organizers should have figure out something for this, because in this way it is terrible._br/_ But after this, the programs were great. We really liked the El Golfo, Los Hervideros and in Timanfaya national park the geothermal demonstration. But for us it should've need more time to take photos and enjoy the places. For us it was rushing. _br/_ We've been in La Geria to visit a vinery. It is an unnecessary program and takes too much time. We could see the vineyards perfectly from the bus too. It is only because the travellers should spend money in the vinery shop. _br/_ And we hate the lunch. We booked for a buffet lunch for 8 euro/per., but most of the food was made from canned food. It was a big disappointed part for us. We tought we will get some really good pailla or some special Spanish food, but we finally get some . We felt overwhelmed because of this lunch. If someone goes for this trip, choose the lunch from the bar! Or the organizers should find a better restaurant!_br/_ The guide was very nice and funny, and he known a lot about the island, it was interesting to listen him. Thanks a lot for him!

A good and varied tour, decent value for money and a much more convenient way of seeing timanfaya than by car. Shame the trip doesn't manage to include the volcano information centre but you can't have everything

This was a pleasant and enjoyable trip. The only thing is you spend an awful long time on the coach. We spent nearly 2 hours on the coach doing pick ups, and drop offs, and people swapped coaches when they were doing different trips. We only had half hour for lunch and 15 minutes in the vineyard, yet as I say, so much time spend on the pick up. Still a nice trip.

The tour was very good, great guide and driver. The cafe where we stopped was awful.I was charged €2.50 for half a cup of coffee despite me querying this several times. It is the only place used by all the coaches so a tourist trap. Why not stop in the village ,much more pretty and too many pickups too

This was a very quick tour and if you don't mind being treated like a sheep and learning very little about the places it visited then it may suit you. It seemed like we stopped at places the guide had family at and to make a bit of money for a cafe. The visit to a vineyard was pointless as we were given a centimetre of wine to try but learnt nothing of the process making it. Ok it was a whistle stop tour but to tell you nothing was pointless. Less time at the cafe and more time learning a little more about the wine making would improve the trip.

Review by:   Shandin R,    December 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The only reason to take this tour is to be able to do the Timanfaya crater tour, which can only be done by coach. The rest of the activities would be much better done independently in a rental car. The process of getting people on and off the coach takes forever, you have to wait for people who are inconsiderate and late. The first stop wasn't great but a couple of the others were quite good. The lunch was TERRIBLE. If you book this, pack a lunch! That way you can sit outside somewhere with a view. They funnel you into a back room of a bad restaurant, you have no choice where you sit, and the buffet food is really poor, but not as bad as the watered down wine they serve.

Very friendly guide. Loved the camel ride very good value for 6 euros. Amazing scenery. One gets to see a lot more of the National Park by being on a coach as cars are not allowed to drive around the park, just up to the restaurant. This trip is a must!

Really enjoyed this tour. All stop offs were insightful to the area and the hot water demonstration at the park really good to watch. Visit to the vineyard was not as expected - ushered in, one quick sample then encouraged to buy or leave. Lunch break a little too long if you don't choose to eat at the buffet. However would recommend anyone to take this tour if looking for good insight into the natural sights of Lanzarote. Duration of the tour was good. Picked up promptly from hotel, though some hanging around when waiting at the bus meeting point and to get picked up to be taken back to Playa Blanca.

Amazing scenery, highly recommend this trip to anyone. The tour guide was friendly and funny, the coach was clean and air conditioned... Views I'll never forget and our 4 year old enjoyed it too._br/_ Take sandwiches as the lunch stop is busy and by the time you get served you'll have little time to eat.

Bus was on time and picked me up directly opposite my hotel- guide Maria welcomed me with a smile, was super friendly and even introduced me to a friend of hers who was also travelling solo - which was greatly appreciated and made the trip even more enjoyable! The national park is a must see!

Awful trip.Tour guide was hard to understand, rude and impatient. The tour itself took us to the same cafe twice, the actual volcano was a rushed experience and the final stop to the vineyard a waste of time. A 15 mins stop with no info about it, no grapes just a shot of horrible wine! Wasted day!

Very good trip with great views. The driver was excellent. The meal stop was poor as the food was not good and the staff were surly and disinterested. The wine stop was even worse! We have enjoyed some very good Lanzarote wines but not these!

The trip itself was REALLY neat! However, the tickets that I received said that we were to be at our bus stop at 12 p.m. When we called, we found out that we were supposed to be there at 9 a.m. Fortunately we had another day available and we were able to take it the next day, but we missed out on an opportunity to do any other tours while we were there since by the time we knew we missed it, it was too late to book anything else!

A very nice day spent in South Lanzarote, the trip was very well organised and all credit goes to the guide - Radmilla - she was brilliant and gave us a lot of information throughout the day.

What you see on this tour is great - camels were good fun, the volcano visit was interesting and the winery was worth a look. However, it is so rushed in parts volcano visit and winery in particular that you don't get the chance to take it in. We weren't allowed to eat on the coach fair enough but there was no time built in anywhere for the kids to even wolf down a sandwich - they ended up hungry and whining. Not good for a family tour. I would not recommend it - rent a car and do it yourself instead.

This trip was taken with our family of 4. We have two teenage boys. We were picked up at our resort and taken to the the meeting location for out bus. This was a big, double-decker bus. I'm not a fan of the BIG tour buses. I prefer the little 15-20 person van tours. The size of the tour is my only complaint about this tour, but that is just personal preference. I did not see any of the smaller tour vans while on this island so don't think it is an option at this location. We enjoyed getting info about our location and seeing the must see local sights. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable and spoke at least 3 languages. Without the info provided, we would have never guess that the vineyards WERE vineyards. They looked liked strange, semi-circular art projects.

Flawless organization. Clear and accurate information about the program and pick up point. Good contact. Only 1 shop stop - vineyard, which is acceptable for organized tour._br/_ Our tour guide, Radmila was competent, took good care of us and gave plenty of interesting information about the island. _br/_ As a person who avoids organized tours whenever possible I do recommend this one.

Very good trip!_br/_ We took this one as a shore excursion during the stopover of our cruise._br/_ If you join from a cruise, the bus will pick you up near the cruise dock. However, there are two cruise docks, and depending on traffic, you might end up on the wrong one, Be aware of that. It is not a big deal. You can solve it with a 10 taxi._br/_ The buses are comfortable. The guide is very courteous. _br/_ Our tour only covered the southern part of the island. There is a longer version that covers the north part too and I wish I would have chosen that one._br/_ The visit to the National Park was a fantastic experience._br/_ There is the option to ride camels. It is a fun experience 6 per person._br/_ I highly recommend this tour.

Good trip. Well organised, though some people were obviously on the coach a while in order to maximise occupancy and minimise stops. Coach was able to bypass the queues of cars waiting for access to the visitor centre so that was a definite bonus over doing it yourself, as was the scenic drive round the volcano on roads where cars didn't have access at all. Sunny weather helped, though take a jacket as it was very windy on the mountainside especially on the camel ride. Experiments they treat you to at the top of the volcano were well worth watching and even our 25 year son came away impressed! Tour guide very knowledgeable, fluent in several languages a little bossy about seats at times but if she's had customers argue over them before, then you can perhaps understand why. Thematic music played on the coach during the lava flow part of the park was an assault on the ears - really not necessary! Lunch stop fine. Vineyards worth seeing - they do look unusual. Wine tasting - passed the time - only got one shot glass to try, so make sure a friend or partner has the other choice, so that between you, you can try both! Value for money and a coach trip probably is the best way to enjoy the volcanic scenery, particularly if you can sit on the top deck like we did.

This was not what we expected from Viators. We expected the guide to be knowledgeable about volcanoes and the geology of Lanzarote. Instead he parroted a prepared script in three languages, not always at the point that the script applied to. The tour of lava fields was spectacular, the visit to the vineyard and other parts of the trip were moderately interesting to pointless.

Review by:   Simon H,    December 2016 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
Lively and knowledgeable guide but a little disappointed that we didn't get to stay longer at each location. Each stop was for about 20 minutes before moving on, including the vineyard which wasn't a tour just a quick tasting without any background or explanation behind its production. Seeing the volcanoes and sea of lava was very impressive and worth the trip.

The tour was well organized and the Dutch Guide was very good at explaining things. We saw everything on the programme and were allowed plenty of time to see it properly. The trip does involve getting on and off of the coach quite a few times so be aware of that if you have walking difficulty. But most of the stops were easy to get to and not far to walk from the coach. There was a luch stop which was good value at 8 euros for all you could eat buffet hot and cold with wine / water included. Next time we go back we will definatly be doing the full day Northern Island trip.

Excellent trip. Managed to see a lot of things in a relatively small space of time, camels, volcanoes, lagoons, vineyards and coastline. The guide seemed knowledgeable, and the amount of information being provided was just right in my opinion. _br/_ Not sure how suitable the trip would have been for small children or those who struggled with walking, as a couple of the stops involved walking to be able to see the sights. _br/_ Worth noting that lunch wasn't included and the 'bar snacks' were almost as expensive as doing the buffet that had been arranged as an optional extra, so if you don't want to pay out extra for lunch best to take your own.

A good Tour with a lot fitted in pre lunch. Good guide and the optional Camel ride was enjoyable. The buffet lunch was good value at only 8 euros. The short tour may be better for some as it seems to be a little padded out after lunch. Enjoyable day and good value.

The National Park was definitely worth seeing. However, the experience of working with Viator was one we will not repeat. Via e-mail, my husband had been very specific about the questions he asked so as to make sure that our needs would be met e.g. pick up point convenient to pier and specific drop off time to account for ship's sailing. Arrangements did not work out as expected and we had to pay for taxi service both to and from the bus.

The volcano tour was very good, the geezer was tourist sham. Made for good entertainment but not really needed. We also did the vine yard at the end of the day, again a bit of a waste of time. I'd do the coach tour again through the volcanic rock etc but not the vine yard.
