Mallorca Day Trip to Majorica Pearl Factory and Caves of Drach

Mallorca, Spain

Discover some of Mallorca’s top attractions on a day trip to the Majorica Pearl Factory and Cavern of the Dragon (also known as Caves of the Drach or Cuevas del Drach). Head to the town of Manacor to learn how the famous Majorica pearls are made, and discover the fascinating 1.5-mile-long (2.4-km) Cavern of the Dragon, which has an impressive height of 82 feet (25 meters)! You’ll also enjoy a boat trip on Lake Martel (one of the world’s largest underground lakes), listen to a live classical music concert and watch a spectacular light show! Finish the day with a panoramic sightseeing tour of Porto Cristo and a liqueur tasting in Manacor.

This exciting and comprehensive day trip on Mallorca starts with a drive in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. Head inland through the beautiful villages of Santa Margarita and Petra as you make your way toward the town of Manacor. Here, visit the Majorica Pearl Factory to see how its famous man-made pearls are crafted. Note that if you choose the transport option from the northern part of the island, you will visit Perlas de Mallorca factory instead.

Next, discover one of Mallorca’s best natural wonders, a series of caves called the Cavern of the Dragon. The caves, mentioned in Jules Verne’s book Clovis Dartetor, were discovered around the year 1338. In total, they are 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long, but only half of that is accessible – enjoy a one-hour guided tour along the 0.75-mile (1.2-km) route. While you’re in the cave, enjoy a 10-minute live performance of classical music.

At Lake Martel, one of the world’s largest underground lakes that’s hidden within the caves, watch a fascinating light show that imitates the sun rising over the lake, and enjoy a short boat ride. Alternatively, you may continue the Cavern of the Dragon tour on foot and join the rest of the group outside the caves.

When you leave the caves, head to Porto Cristo, a fishing village on the east coast of Mallorca, for a panoramic sightseeing tour. Porto Cristo is located on a sheltered bay with beautiful sandy beaches, coastal caves and shallow water. You’ll have some free time here to take a lunch break (own expense) in the center of town, which offers a wide selection of bars and restaurants, or walk past Porto Cristo's 15th-century watchtower.

Then head back though Manacor, the birthplace of top tennis player Rafael Nadal, to your original departure point.

enjoyed the caves of Drach but the pearl factory I felt was just pushed in to sell us things. Basically just dumped for 45 minutes in a pearl selling establishment.

The caves of Drach had me saying wow especially with the beautiful formations. Sitting in the dark listening to music as a beautiful addition.

The caves were amazing was a shame you're only there for a short while. The orchestra playing on a boat rowing around the lake was quite good but due to the music not being amplified became hard to hear due to young children talking throughout. The pearl factory wasn't really my thing but interesting if your into that kind of stuff.

Was nice but too many people for my taste.

First, my mother and I were told to meet at a bus stop at 9:20 with no other info. There were about 15 buses there and we did not know which one was ours. Finally someone explained that the bus was late and gave us the bus after walking up and down with my 83 year old mother trying to find the bus. The tour says we go to a pearl factory but it is only a pearl store, the caves were awesome, the best part of the trip. We were also told we would get a in depth tour of Porto Cristo but we were dropped off downtown and told to meet back in 2 hours. If we would have known we could have broth our bathing suits to spend a little time on the beach. Very disapointed.

I will say this, this makes getting there easy and for me that's worth it. However, the pearl factory is a jewelry store and the facts you learn, hard to take in when the guide talks about it in four different languages one after the other.

Review by:   lyanta,    August 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
This could have been a lot better if there were less people and there was more of a context of the caves presented. It was a very good example of mass tourism where money is the main objective. Our coach tour guide was amazing though.

I would highly recommend this trip, the caves are breathtaking and the concert is a lovely experience. Thanks also to Angela, a wonderful guide and very knowledgeable.

We loved the caves of Drach and our short visit to Porto cristo both very beautiful places to visit._br/_ The English tour was booked, however the tour was also in 3 other languages, this was very difficult due to the speed the tour guide was talking and moving quickly from one language to another. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and had lots of information to share._br/_ Travelling on the air conditioned coach was a nice luxury.

Great but don't believe you will be touring a pearl factory. The caves are amazing and manageable for almost anyone who can walk even short distances.

Great tour! Mixture of both a natural wonder, shopping and visit to a lovely harbour. Only couple of quibbles I have is that the tour felt very rushed, would have liked more time in Porto Cristo. A guide in the caves to tell us more information about them would gave been good.

Cavern of the Dragon was really nice....not so much the shopping at the pearl store. I did find a pair of very small and cheap pair of pinkish orange earrings for my 10 year old granddaughter.

Ahhh absolutely beautiful! I would recommend this to everyone who is planning a trip to Mallorca. The tour guide was great, told us about the history of Mallorca, the different city and also took us capture very beautiful places. A must do trip when you are at Mallorca.

Juan and Fernando were the best guides ever! Juan was so funny and kept the whole tour entertaining and interesting. I loved all the little stops we made along the way. It was nice to see more than just the highway going to the caves. Fernando was an excellent driver. I felt very comfortable with the entire ride. i would highly recommend this tour as well as these guides. I learned a lot about the island as well as some fun facts about California that I did not know.

It was nice to get out of Palma and see more of Mallorca. However the Majorica Pearl Factory tour is really a factory outlet with a self guided tour reading how the pearls are made with a demonstration by a worker applying the coating to the bead. The sales staff were a little pushy trying to get you to buy pearl jewelry. Upstairs is a clothing and leather outlet. Our next stop was some caves that were not included on our tour. We did not even know we had an option to go to additional caves. We were taken to Puerto Christo and had almost 2 hours of free time. We enjoyed walking around Puerto Christo and had a nice lunch along the waterfront. Then back on the bus to go to the Cavern of the Dragon. We had to wait in line almost 30 minutes to get into the caverns. We were not given a brochure by our guide. I noticed that other tourists were using them to find out more about what they were seeing. It was very crowded in the cavern and we were hearded through to the viewing area. The concert was over in 15 minutes and the boat ride was less than 5 minutes.

Great they picked us up at our hotel. The underground caves were quite interesting, and the boats with live music were an experience. But it was short, only walking through the caves, the music boats were far in the corner of the lake, the pearl and #39;factory and #39; was just shopping in the store.

Firstly, please note that it's at least a 15 minute walk to the coach which for some reason picks up at the entrance to the port. We were not aware of this which made us slightly late as I had my elderly mother who could not walk at pace. Though the guide was professional he had to translate in four languages which made the tour rather laborious to listen to. He also seemed disinterested as he was reading a script. _br/_ The Pearl Factory in my opinion seemed a waste of time and only good as a toilet stop, but the Caves were stunning especially the orchestral boat procession which sailed across the lake.

The pick up was late, thus did not know if we were at the right place to be picked up since there were no signs indicating that the pick up place was correct. for our particular tour. Th tour was given in Spanish and English. Difficult to understand the tour guide's english.

Caves were amazing. That was about it. Tour company was horrible. Had to walk 1/2 mile from ship to outside of port and weren't told this until via email after we had already embarked in Rome. Luckily we had wifi access to receive our email. Another group on our ship had no idea, but luckily they ran into us. Then we boarded a bus, that took us to another location where we waited for another bus. The Pearl Factory was a joke. If you can figure out how to do the caves tour without the fake pearl factory, then do it. The bus driver didn't speak English so you couldn't communicate to find out what was going on. We booked an English speaking tour, but the 'tour guide' repeated everything in three other languages and talked the entire bus trip to and from about an hour or so each way. Other that all that, the caves were amazing and worth the trip.

Loved the Dragon caverns. We also could not get over how beautiful Porto Cristo and the coastline was. Water so blue. I could have done without the stop at the pearl gift shop.

The pearl factory wasnt that exciting. The Cave of the Dragon was great, especially with the boatride and ochestra on the lake at the bottom of the cave. Nice day, except I got in trouble for being the last one on the bus. Toni, our guide, was a bit scary. Apart from that, a nice tour.

Review by:   Susan T,    June 2014 Review: 3 star rating: Worth doing
The cavern and visit to the port town was a great part of the tour, but the "so called Pearl factory" was nothing more than a outlet mall. Need to rename this tour to be more appropriate or consider touring an ACTUAL pearl making facility. Worth doing for the caverns.

The excursion was not so interesting and time was wrong organized. We lost two hours to visit the cavern because waited the small group visited other cavern first and nobody offered to join.

Apart from Cavern of the Dragon I hated this trip. Pearl Factory - a BIG CON to get you to shop - there is no insight into the pearling industry on Palma Mallorca - it is a shop to buy pearls downstairs and leather goods upstairs - all of which I found very expensive and rude assistants for non buyers.

We werent told a specific meeting point and just had to wait and keep asking tour guides if they were there to pick us up. Our bus was 25 minutes late. It was also quite irritating listening to the narration in 4 different languages. MUST have a moderate to high level of fitness for the caves.

Review by:   A C L,    November 2012 Review: 3 star rating: Worth doing
I went in the morning to the meeting point but the bus didn't have the tour company name displayed and there was a lot of buses so there was a bit of confusion to begin with. The tour is conducted in English, Spanish, German and French. The peal factory is actually a pearl outlet shop (I expected to see the pearls getting made) but still very beautiful. Porto Cristo was gorgeous and we had lots of free time. The caves were amazing. We stopped at a shop with olive tree souviners and the time spent there was a little too long. Some other people on the tour went to a second cave but it wasn't included with this tour so I missed out on that (a bit dissapointing). The tour is cheap and gives you a good overview of the island and the cave and Porto Cristo is truly amazing. I noticed the tour company I went with actually advertised the tour cheaper on their site.

Fantastic day trip and well worth the money. I really enjoyed the Pearl Factory (however I missed the liquor tastings as I didn't see them). I felt soooo moved by the symphony in the Cavern of the Dragon... it was one of the best experiences on my entire trip. Highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Mallorca.

The trip was ok. The guide was going on non stop in all the languages which became a bit too much. He could have used long sentences instead which would have helped._br/_ The pearl factory was a total disappointment and so was the handcraft showroom. The caves of dragon were nice however Viator did not have the option for the other caves. _br/_ The small village was good fun to shop and go around._br/_ Overall very good caves and boring pearl factory makes it an average trip.

Review by:   Loraine W,    September 2012 Review: 1 star rating: I do not recommend this
It was a horrible experience. On this trip we took seven excursions in seven different ports. Six of them were above average to excellent. Only the Viator excursion in Mallorca was horrible. First off, the pick up point was not at the port where my ship docked. We had to take a taxi cab from our ship to the place assigned for us to be picked up. Secondly, the tour bus was more like a public bus because we had to make a stop ten minutes after starting to switch buses. The guide on the bus translated what he was saying into six languages each time he spoke. It was very difficult to stay focused until your language came up; and, by then, you were well past what was being spoken about. Because of the "public" route the bus took, we almost missed our boat leaving the island. I would not recommend this tour company to anyone.

It was OK tour. Instead of spending time at Pearl factory , which was not a factory but just marketing, i would have been better if we had some more time at famous beaches of Mallorca.

Bus was a little hot and so I deducted 1 star, but the experiences were wonderful. So amazed by our tour guides ability to speak 4 different languages. There was plenty of time in a small beach village. Wow, all the sites in 1 day and to get us back right on time was amazing.

Sorry, not so good. Had a feeling the guide was getting kickbacks for all the places we visited...many not included on the itinerary....difficult to understand, as he was working 3 languages at once. Would NOT recommend this trip, which is unusual for a viator tour (we've been on more than 20)!
