Perched Villages of the Luberon Day Trip from Marseille

Marseille, France

Explore picturesque medieval villages deep in the Provençal countryside on this 9-hour tour through the Luberon region from Marseille. Travel by minivan with your guide to the Luberon villages of l'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Lourmarin and Gorges. Wander through the bustling open-air markets of Bonnieux or Roussillon and perhaps browse the stalls for souvenirs. Learn how lavender — the symbol of Provence — is transformed into luxurious essential oils and beauty products and, in the summer, make a photo stop at Sénanque Abbey to admire Provence’s beautiful lavender fields in full bloom.

Meet your guide in the morning near Marseille’s port, then hop into your air-conditioned vehicle to begin your tour through the Luberon region. With medieval villages nestled among rolling lavender fields and rugged hills, the Luberon is widely considered the most attractive corner of Provence.

Travel with your guide along countryside roads in the foothills of the Luberon mountains to the town of l'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and enjoy free time to explore at your leisure. Duck into antique shops along the canal side or soak up the sunshine on a local cafe terrace. Then, head onward to the hilltop village of Gorges.

Admire the Roman Pont Julien bridge on route to Bonnieux, a picture-postcard Provençal village dominated by a 12th-century church. Wind your way through the picturesque Combe of Lourmarin and stop for photos in Lourmarin, famous for its Renaissance castle. There, enjoy more free time for lunch at your leisure.

In the summer (June 15 to July 15), visit Sénanque Abbey — founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th-century — and take a moment to capture the blooming lavender fields on camera. Wander through open-air markets in local villages such as Roussillon and Bonnieux, and perhaps pick up a souvenir or two along the way.

Stop at the Lavender Museum’s shop (closed in January) and try out an exclusive line of natural cosmetics made from the fragrant essential oils of the region's most famous plant. Then, head on to the village of Roussillon, perched beneath ochre-colored cliffs. When your journey through the Luberon region comes to an end, travel back to the port in Marseille with your guide to conclude your tour.

Please note: As the markets only take place in the morning, the order of sites and villages visited may change.

Beautiful, comprehensive tour which allowed plenty of time at each location. A must do if you are in Marseille.

Amazing trip and a beautiful day through the small villages. Our guide stopped to see some of the lavender fields at our expressed interest. Our guide was also very attentive, kind, and informative. Great day trip... small shops, quaint villages, antiques and flea market, beautiful views.

This was a tour that was well worth the money, Guide Benjamin was fun, informative, and flexible. Lavender had been harvested the day before our trip ,but he went out of his way to find one for us and to take our pictures. Number of villages and timimimg at stops was very good. Just a perfect day!

This was the absolute most beautiful day. I traveled to France for my 30th birthday alone and this was the tour I chose for my actual birthday. I have never experienced such beautiful sights, and we saw a quaint street market where I made several purchases for myself and for souvenirs. I recommend this tour to everyone who considers France!

A very enjoyable tour overall visiting a number of hilltop villages, very picturesque and beautiful views. It was a small group tour, 6 people plus the guide, who was very knowledgeable, approachable and spoke excellent English. We had sufficient time in each location, except perhaps where we had lunch as there was really only enough time to have lunch, another half hour on the lunch stop would have been good. Pick up was on time. Only thing I would say is I thought it was a little expensive for what it was, but if you're happy with the price I would certainly recommend it.

Our guide arrived punctually at the pick-up point. She explained where we going and what we would see at Isle-sur-la Sorgue, the Lavender Museum, Gordes, Roussillon and Lourmarin. Her English was good and she would answer any question posed during the day. At every location she would drop us off, allowing us time to explore at our own pace, and then she would pick us up at a pre-arranged time.

Great trip and Cedric was a great guide - good humoured and unflappable despite having to cope with horrendous traffic jams resulting from a forest fire, and having to rearrange our schedule. He really went the extra mile for us - literally - to make sure we were all happy! Thank you cedric for a great day.

Very very pleasant. Many of us were there more to see the lavender fields and our driver tried diligently to find us some. Due to the hot weather it had all been recently harvested. but he did try and ended up stopping at some sunflower fields for us._br/_ a little more history would have been nice, but all in all a nice day out and some gorgeous and delightful places to be shown.

Our guide, Violet, was great. Very knowledgeable of the towns and the history. The views were amazing and we had just enough time to see everything we wanted to without feeling rush. A great day.

It turns up to be a private tour of two. Instead of cancellation the tour still depart as normal. Should have 100 confidence to book

The day was very enjoyable and we got to see some lovely villages. There was quite a bit of walking up and down hills so you would have to be fairly fit to go on this tour.

Great day trip! The markets at Isle sur la Sorgue were amazing and I only wish I didn't have a limit on what I can take with me on my flight back home. Gordes, the Abbey, and Roussillon were also amazing, and it was great to have someone who knows the area to take us to these places and give us a little background/orientation before we got to wander around on our own. Cedric, our guide, was very friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic about the area.

The tour met all my expectations and your descriptions of what we were to see as far as driving thru and stopping to view and poke around were spot on. Many times what you read and think you are going to see and experience are 2 different things which result in disappointment. I was happy that this was not the case.

With the Luberon day tour we had such a great time with the tour guide, besides, the other people had cancelled and it was just my wife and me. The agency was Agencia Provence Tours the tour guide was Granier Laurent better known as Paco as a matter of fct i wrote the agency giving Paco a very good commendation he really-really deserved it. He was funny, extremely serviceable, very knowledgable, polite and he went above and beyond for us to have a good time. The villages visited all four in total were a paradise each one in its own way. The scenery out of this world and the knowledge we received that day was excellent. Overall it was an excellent day. Again Viator knows how to pick it's agencies.

Reno was a gracious and knowledgable guide. Beautiful villages, each unique, with lots of free time for wandering and sampling regional food and wine and historic locales. Friendly fellow travelers in our small (5) group.

Our guide was friendly and the towns we toured were simply gorgeous, filled with lots of little lanes and medieval streets to explore. The market we visited was also a great experience. However I would have liked more historical background information and anecdotes about the places we visited. Our guide was really more of a chauffeur than a guide.

Fabulous day. Thank you Viator. Our tour guide Marina is an angel and went out of her way to give us information and help with things we were interested in. I truly wish all tour guides were "marinas". Would make life wonderful. A great day to remember. Thank you

Just fantastic. Our guide was great. Very friendly and knowledgeable. We visited spots that would have been quite tricky had we tried on our own. The tour itself was also a nice mix of photo stops and time in the towns and surrounding areas. The Luberon proved to be a perfect day trip from Marseille for us. We'll definitely be looking for similar opportunities on future trips!

Nice trip. Beautiful villages. Especially Gordes and Roussillon are nice villages. I would recommend doing this trip in the second half of June because of the lavender fields. Note, however, that the villages have cobblestone streets that are rather steep (not fit for disabled people)

This trip was the highlight of our 10-day France vacation. This is the countryside scenery and beautiful old small towns that I was looking for. We even did a little shopping in one town. It was much better than one of those huge bus tours, and the guide even went a few miles out of the normal plan to stop by an abbey with a lavender field after I asked if the one shown in all the Provence tour books was nearby. The van picked up and dropped off right at my hotel in Marseille.
