Neuschwanstein Castle Small-Group Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

The enchanting old-world town of Fussen lies in the foot hills of the Alps, framed by one of the most breathtaking natural settings in the world. Traveling by rail on small group guided tour from Munich, you'll tour the ethereal Neuschwanstein Castle, be taken to the best vantage points; the lake, the postcard-perfect aerial view of the equally beautiful Hohenschwangau Castle and to the waterfall gorge.

This glorious folly was built in the 19th century by the famed "mad" King Ludwig II, a man intoxicated by myth and who himself became a legend. The shimmering white towers of the castle among the clouds are instantly recognizable to many and is the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle, and is also famous as the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Castle. To visit it is to step inside a fairy tale.

Your guide will tell the engaging story of King Ludwig's renowned and tragic reign, of his turbulent times, and of the obsession that drove him to build his fantasy castle in the mountains and ultimately destroyed him. Take an exclusive internal tour of the king's private chambers with a specialist castle guide.

Entrance fees to the Neuschwanstein Castle are not included. A supplement of 12 euros (per person) is payable direct. This guided tour includes advance booking so you can skip long lines and gain quick access to the Neuschwanstein Castle. Don't waste time waiting in lines on vacation!

The journey to Neuschwanstein takes approximately 2 hours by train. Germany's rail system is world renown and this journey to the Alps is no exception. Offering spectacular views, trains are clean, comfortable and equipped with washrooms. Feel free to walk around and chat to your fellow travellers as well as your guide, who can answer any questions about Munich and Bavaria.

Jovo was our guide and he was excellent. The small group setting made our tour very personal. The cost was exceptional for the overall experience. The castle is exactly as it has been described..... a fairytale. The most beautiful countryside, landscape and castle. I would most definately recommend this tour. About a 2.5 hour bus trip from Munich, but the coach was luxurious, the commentary funny and interesting and you had the entire day to explore the surrounding grounds, lake, paths, bridge and waterfall and of course the castle. I loved every minute!

Came with my family to see this castle, i was amazed by the history of the Bayern dynasty as well as the architectural prowess achieved by Ludwig II, the fact that Wagner is involved in all of this makes even more thrilling and epic everything the paintings the music makes this an unique experience. I was lucky to have Luis Lopez as spanish guide who was very enthusiastic and eloquent about the history of the castle and it's inhabitants back on 1800.

We enjoyed ourselves, despite the rainy day. The tour bus was very comfortable and everything was very easy. Veronika was our guide and she did a great job. We also loved the freedom to do some of the tour independently, not needing to always be in the larger group. The only trick at all was finding the tour, which we did by asking around at Hoptbanhof. Do be aware you need to go to the back of the ground-level train area to find the Radius Tour office to check in!

We had a great day with Jax, our tour guide on this tour. He broke up the 40 minute walk up to the castle, by stopping 5 times and explaining the history of the castle and King Ludwig. Some free time to enjoy the area too.

I am giving this 3 stars because I am comparing it with my previous years ago, when you can walk around the castle comfortable and have the luxury of taking your time marveling at the details of the eccentric taste of King Ludwig. Because again, now there are loads of Chinese bus and now the bus goes all the way up, unlike before you walk uphill to get there _br/_ But even if I already visited this many years ago it was still interesting for me as I have learned new things, thru our guide Justin, he was great with all the facts and stories he shared about Ludwig and the castle thru his witty and unconventional story telling style.

AWESOME!! I would highly recommend this one, I believe our tour guide's name was Adam? He knew a lot of background information and was knowledgeable on King Ludwig II.

Guide was great, very knowledgeable. Trip was well worth the expense and time. Much walking unless you use the horse and carriage. Only problem worth noting is that we had to change trains on the way back to Munich which made the entire trip over 10 hours.

Our tour guide was both, knowledgeable and fun. Very funny, to be precise. The castle is stunning, the inner tour was rather too short and the castle’s own guide (not the same as the tour guide) was just ok._br/_ Tour recommendable for families with teenage kids and individual young travelers.

Great tour. _br/_ Definitely a must see._br/_ Best part was out guide - Jeff._br/_ Very knowledgeable and entertaining._br/_ Had a nice trick for keep the train car as private as possible from daily commuters._br/_ Comfortable train ride with not too many stops._br/_ Be advised a lot of uphill walking for those not accustomed to long walks._br/_ The tour runs like a German train. Basically 5 minutes in each room of the tour_br/_ Very efficient, but very little time to explore or study the artifacts inside.

We booked the trip to the castle at the end of March. It was a mistake. We could not do the mountain path to get the famous view of the castle due to snow on the path. Petra the guide was helpful. Unfortunately trip was disappointing as we don't have any lovely photos of the castle for keepsake. Can't blame the tour operator for the weather but perhaps to advice visitors what to expect prior to booking.

Our tour guide Verena was excellent. She was raised in Munich and had a tremendous amount of knowledge, she shared great information on the history of Neuschwanstein and King Ludwig. She interacted with everyone in our group and connected with everyone on the train ride home to answer all their questions. She was simply the bestrecommend highly!

Neuschwanstein Castle was the highlight of our trip! It was a dream come true for me...something that has been on my bucket list for years. Dan and Thomas were our tour guides and they were awesome! We split into 2 groups of 20 which was a perfect number for each group. They were extremely knowledgeable with the history of the castle. I am a very slow walker and I told them before we hiked up the steep hill. They gave the option of taking the carriage, but I opted to walk later regretting it. They took numerous stops along the way and filled everyone in on more history as we all caught or breath. The last bit was the hardest for me, but Dan always made sure I was not forgotten even when I had to lag behind a little. We tipped him at the end of the tour but most people walked away and didn't even thank them. Please, please be considerate of your guides and at least thank them if not give them a little tip. I would highly recommend this trip and this company. If I ever get the chance to go again, I would use this company and request these 2 tour guides. Thank you so much!

Amazing experience to visit this place. Again, the guide was wonderful. The train journey, the bus and then up to the castle. the castle is interesting, but definitely more magical to see from a distance. All in all, a very exciting visit.

Great tour, Jax was very knowledgeable and a fun tour guide! It had snowed the night before our tour which added to the beauty of Neuschwanstein Castle and its surroundings.

This was a great day trip, we were very luck as it had snowed the day before and made the castle seem even more magical. Money well spent. A long walk up or you can take the horse and carriage which was good.Good Guide.

We were lucky to do this trip when the place was covered in snow. The tour guide was excellent and told us the story of the castle and King Ludwig on the train journey there. Highly recommended.

The only good thing was to skip the line. The guide was lost and confuse. He misscalculated the number os persons, almost made us lose the train connection, wasn't able to explain before what we were doing on the way to the castle and gave historical explanations for just part of the group. Terrible

Absolutely loved this tour with our guide, Chris! He was so knowledgeable, intelligent, and funny, yet professional and respectful to everyone. One can see how he's passionate about his work and respects German history and culture. I was traveling solo, but the group was big about 15 to 20 people from what I recall. We definitely all had seats on the roundtrip trains, though, so not one problem. Very comfortable and scenic trip. And it wasn't tiring at all because we opted for the bus to take us up to the castle. Don't bother walking that! You can save that energy for the walk downhill, which is quite a stretch. Trust me, bc I was the one in the tour group who almost delayed everyone not once, but twice haha. Chris and the group laughed with me so it's all good : So happy I took this tour because honestly Chris really made it fun and worthwhile. Definitely opt him as a guide!

Suzanne was an amazing tour guide. She was especially kind to me (being 6 months pregnant) and also to an elderly woman on our tour; she was continously searching for ways to ensure everyone was well taken care of. Lovely tour, the hike was not nearly as bad as reviews made it seem!!!

It was a long day with a two hour train ride there and another two hours back. Then only a 20 - 25 minute tour of the castle. Our tour guide was good and full of information.

Great memorable trip. The weather is important to be able to see the fabulous views. Roland was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Organisationally the short bus trip back down had unpredictable timing leaving us worried. Recommend the bus up but suggest walking back down.

The guide was excellent and the village was very charming. Neuschanstein is spectacular but not a very long tour. My only feed back is that there is a long train ride to get there, 2 hours each way and the tour itself was less than 90 mins. Please note that there is a tremendous amount of walking including stairs and uphill-not recommended for those who have difficulty walking.

The best part was the ride up. Our guide was really great on giving us information about the history at the time. The hike up to the castle was not so easy due to the steep incline. Take your time and you should be fine. Felt bad about taking carriage ride and making the horses do all the work so we hoofed it ourselves. _br/_ The castle itself is amazing, but the tour is lacking. The groups were too big and we felt rushed through the rooms that they show you. Long day for sure, but the train ride was nice.

Good way to see the castle while staying in Munich. Beautiful train ride and very organized. Plenty of time to look around, eat and get back to Munich. Only complaint is that we booked a small group and it was not a small group.

Our guide was awesome! He was so knowledgeable and made the trip even more fun. The Neuschwanstein Castle was beautiful and after a hot day of walking we were able to swim in the most gorgeous lake I have ever seen right by the castle.

Our tour guide was Jake. YOU MUST TRY TO GET JAKE AS YOUR TOUR GUIDE. He is an American guide and he is the main reason this tour was so incredible. Jake is fun, charismatic, witty, funny, informative, knowledgeable, passionate and helpful. He taught our group a lot of history about the castle and made it fun to pay attention to. As for the other factors of this trip, the train ride to the destination is a little over an hour, but it is a very comfortable and scenic ride through the countryside. The actual castle is stunning, though there isn't a lot of opportunity for pictures from the outside. And you cannot take pictures inside the castle so be prepared. The actual tour of the castle is very quick approx 30 mins but it is still fun. Again, I cannot recommend Jake enough. To put it into perspective, I have been traveling and studying abroad for 3 months, going all over Europe, and this tour with Jake is easily in my top 3 highlights of my time abroad. Thank you Jake!

Awesome trip. Great train ride to the country side. The entire experience with the guide Suzanne who was very delightful. She was full of energy and immensely informative like a history professor in narrating the strory around Lugwig and his obsessions with the Architecture and Claasical Music by Wagner. Overall full value for the money.

Great tour - one of the highlights of our tour to Munich. The guide knew her history and was fun to listen to. She made sure that everyone got the most out of the tour. We went by bus instead of a train and that was a good option. The castle is one of the most beautiful in Europe and the view from Marienbrucke is definitely worth seeing. Takes a bit of a walk though and we almost missed the bus. Would have been nice to be able to visit Hohenschwangau as well but the schedule is packed. Some walking required and that is good. Amazing scenery.

The tour was my idea and my husband and son agreed to go because sometimes, we have to do what mom wants. We both agreed that it was a great day. At the end of the day, everyone agreed that it was the highlight of our trip to Germany!! Our tour guide made it fun and interesting and we were smart enough to listen to him. He told us not to miss the ice cream and the donut balls and we didn't. The donut balls called something in Germany were the best I've ever eaten. Even my super picky teenager, who's never tried a donut, ate one and thought they were amazing!! The tour was shorter than we had expected but the view of the country side and the story made it fun. We had a lovely day and look forward to staying in that area on our next trip. It is breathtakingly beautiful.

Excellent tour, the guide Austin has awesome, knew the history and kept on time for everything. On the train ride back he sat with each of us and answered any questions, history, where to eat / drink, etc. Would book another tour with him any time

Nice short day tour using the train instead of all charter buses. The tour guides were excellent and the advance purchase tickets for the castle well worth it. The train ride from Munich is very nice. There was time to walk down from the castle to the village before the bus back to Fussen. Some in the group were able to tour the castle and stop at the nearby lake for a swim before meeting the bus.
