Porto Walking Tour

Porto, Portugal

Get to know the history of Porto on this 4-hour walking tour with an expert local guide! Explore the city’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic center, seeing Baroque churches and the incredible Porto Cathedral. Hear of Moorish invasions and see some of the city’s more modern highlights, like the wine cellars where its famous Port (fortified wine) is aged, and its iconic iron bridge – Ponte de Dom Luis I.

Meet your guide in Porto's Sé neighborhood, and set off on a walking tour around Porto’s historical center. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient city dates back to the 4th century and its rich history is set in its stones.

Hear how it originated as an outpost of the Roman Empire, growing to survive Moorish and Castilian invasions, before being largely destroyed by the French in the 19th century. See influences left by its different rulers as you walk around, admiring beautiful old palaces and Baroque churches.

See Porto Cathedral in all its Romanesque glory, and walk past the Church of Santa Clara – a gorgeous Baroque gem. Stroll along Aliados Avenue to see a monument to King Peter IV – a monarch held in high regard in Porto -- and soak up the bustling ambiance of Liberdade Square.

Alongside Porto’s historical sites, see some of the city’s more modern attractions like Ponte de Dom Luis I – a double-decker iron bridge that was engineered by an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel. Admire the classic Rabelo boats (flat-bottomed cargo vessels) lined up along the quay, and then walk past the Port cellars where the city’s famous fortified wine is aged and bottled.

After 4 hours of walking around town, continue on your own from Ribeira Square, where your tour finishes.

Our guide Renato, just had the right balance of history and culture supported with anecdotes and facts. Our tour focused on the area round the Se, Liberdad Square and back down to the river. It gave us a good grounding of the layout and where to go to continue our exploration of Porto. Renato was passionate about Porto and Portugal and he passed his enthusiasm on to his group.

A very well done tour even on a rainy day. The guide loved his city and was full of tips and advice for the rest of our trip. He introduced us to the culinary delight that is pastel de nata.

The tour is not as exhausting as one would think looking at the layout of Porto and there's a water bottle provided by the host :_br/_ It's really a bargain especially considering that a coffee/tea, a pastry and a port in a chocolate cup was also included. Thankfully the tour is kept very small so that you get a much more personal feeling._br/_ Renato was an awesome guide and could tell us a lot about the history of Porto and Portugal in general. He was very open and easy to talk to.

Agnes did a great job of showing us the city. We did a lot of walking and it was well worth it. We got to know Porto in an intimate way and enjoyed all of our time on the tour from the knowledge shared to the port wine tasking - it was a fabulous tour. Ask for Agnes.

Viator and Bluedragon Tours never cease to impress! I had taken the walking tour last year with Sara. This year, my daughter and I took the small group tour with Andrea.

This was a great way to be introduced to Porto. Our guide showed us the highlights sprinkled, with history and ample useful information. He catered for all age brackets. And all with a smile and a laugh.

Great tour! Our tour guide, Michael P., was very knowledgeable and excited to share his love of Porto with the group. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the meeting location was difficult to find. It would have helped to have been told to meet in front of the cathedral instead of the Se' neighborhood. If you take this tour, know that Se' means cathedral!

The tour was a good introduction to Porto, its history and culture. It provided a good base from which to explore Porto further and the recommendations of places to get good food was very helpful.

I enjoyed the tour, we could cover a lot of Porto's major touristic sites in a few hours. Our guide, Andrea, was very friendly and helpful and gave us a lot of information about the city. The only downside was a few discrepancies between the advertised inclusions and what we actually had, for example we didn't have the cod dumpling or port wine tasting. Our guide gave us money back to cover the issue, but still going on a Porto tour and not tasting port wine as promised was a bit of a let down.

I did the Porto Walking Tour and it was a great experience. Our guide Renato was enthusiastic and fun. We learned a lot of interesting historic facts and also many details about day to day life in porto. The stop for Natas cakes was very tasty as was the Porto wine on a chocolate cup. A highly recommended tour if its your first day in Porto, since it gives you a nice feeling of the city. Renato then sent us via e-mail recommendations of places to eat and shop which were incredibly useful.

I loved my walking tour with Renato of Blue Dragon tours. It was a bargain, esp. considering it included a stop for coffee and pastry, a nice little taste of port and a bottle of water! 3 - 1/2 hours, plus, and a very small group. The pace was great, and I loved that it included Renato's recommendations for dining, drinking, etc. Renato was knowledgeable and congenial. It was so great to have a tour that was limited in size.

Very good tour. Vera our guide was excellent describing each place we visited plus talking about the history of the city. The only very minor negative on her side was that it was a fast pace walking tour. On the Viator side, they should provide better meeting location add with more points of references. Our taxi driver did not know where the place was and to get there we had to ask 5 or 6 different places to find it. Then it was more than one group in the same place so we had to ask many different people who was Viator guide, very frustating a way to star a tour.

This was a great introduction to Porto and our guide gave us a lot of local knowledge. The walking was enjoyable as too was the treat at the end of the tour. We visited places we may not have found on our own.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour which was led by our guide, Renato. Renato was very friendly, enthusiastic and had an amazing wealth of knowledge. It was great to wander the streets of amazing Porto and learn about its history, culture and sights. The tour was very relaxed and informative. Renato was very generous with his knowledge and time and even took the time out to show us on the map where we had walked and to give us some additional recommendations for restaurants etc. Would highly recommend this tour.

This walking tour was really nice. Walking through porto and #39;s beatiful alley was indeed a very enjoyable experience. Also, our guide, Vera kindly answered our questions, even though it was a trivial one-which made this tour more pleasant to us. We highly recommend this tour :)

The tour was good the information provided was misleading. We didn and #39;t bring water because it said water provided but we were told the website was out of date. Would have liked more historical information rather than personal bias.

I loved this tour. The guide was knowledgeable and I was with a small group of people who could walk. The views were incredible and the little café where we stopped for a break served the absolute best cappuccino. The only drawback was that the tour broke up outside the tour office and I had to find my way back to my hotel.

Our Porto walking tour with Virginia was most enjoyable! She is indeed, a great guide....very professional, informative, knowledgeable, and fun! We did persevere through the cold rain and wind, and Virginia made the best of the uncontrollable situation. We have gone on numerous city walking tours in other countries and can say that Virginia was one of the top guides we have been with. It seemed almost like meeting a new friend after just moving to a new city....rather than meeting a travel guide just giving out details of facts, dates, etc as part of their work day. Virginia was engaging throughout the tour, answered all of our questions, and did it in her own unique style making for a most relaxing day while learning more about your great city. Adding her own comments and experiences made the story of Porto even more interesting. Thanks for offering this outstanding service to help visitors learn more about a wonderful historic city with lots of charm.

Excellent tour. Virginia was a great guide, very knowledgable and happy to share great recommendations on places to eat. We started at 9:30 with a small group and covered at lot of places in three hours. It was great to see inside the churchs, cathedral and the food market. I would recommend this tour for those who want to know more about the city, its culture and history.

The walking tour of Porto was excellent! It covered all the major attractions except the St Francis church by the river. Walked through quaint streets which we would not have known of on our own. Sao Bento station with all the beautiful blue tile scenes on the walls and the Se Cathedral are breathtaking. Enjoyed the visit to the local market and a short break at the cafe next to it. Our guide Sid was excellent, informative, and gave us enough time to enjoy all the sights-did not hurry us even though we went over the allotted time of the tour!

Brilliant tour of the city with our guide Virginia. We were very fortunate as there were only three of us on this tour as two of the participants did not show up. We met up with Virginia at 9.30am and had over three hours with her. She toured us to all the main sights and gave us a thorough tour and history of the city and all the sights. Virginia was very knowledgeable about the city and great fun to be with. I would have no hesitation recommending this tour to friends and family. It was incredible value. Thank you Virginia for such a great day!

We booked this tour two days out and it was worth every penny. Virginia showed myself and two others around another couple didn't show up and it was easily one of the best walking tours I've been on. Virginia was not only personable but extremely knowledgeable about Porto and it's history - it was excellent to hear from someone who was passionate about the work she does telling the story of Porto and Portugal without us knowing much about Portugal's history, Virginia did a great job of context-setting.

I highly recommend this local company for tours and bike rentals. Even in the rain, it was a wonderful tour of the city and a highlight of my stay in Porto. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and able to provide information about the sights, as well as make suggestions about other places to visit. The staff were friendly and accommodating.
