Tuscany in One Day Sightseeing Tour from Rome

Rome, Italy

See the very best of Tuscany on a full-day trip from Rome! Traveling to the stunning Val d'Orcia region, south of Siena, you'll be introduced to a beautiful landscape where medieval towns cling to sunny hills and rustic farms adorn the countryside. With an expert guide, you'll visit Montelpulciano, Montalcino and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Pienza, sampling fine wines and local delicacies as you go!

Heading north out of Rome by luxury coach, your Tuscany day trip first takes you to Montepulciano, famous for its vino and views! Nestled in southern Tuscany, Montelpulciano is a Renaissance hill-town, famed for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a red wine. With your guide, take a walking tour and see the Florentine-style clock tower, the Etruscan city walls, medieval wine cellars and the interestingly unfinished Duomo.

After a stop for photos, get back on your coach to travel west into the heart of Tuscany, to the area surrounding Montalcino. Here you'll visit the gorgeous Sant' Antimo Abbey, where the stone walls ring with the sound of Gregorian chants, before admiring the views over the town's vineyards.

The rich Brunello di Montepulciano red wine is produced at these vineyards, and you'll sample a glass over a three-course lunch at one of the area's traditional farms! Featuring produce grown on the farm, your lunch allows you to dine in true Tuscan style before enjoying a wine tasting of each of the wines grown on site.

Spend part of your afternoon in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Pienza, where you'll have approximately 45 minutes to explore at your leisure. The town's layout was designed by Pope Pius II in the 14th century, as he wanted to transform the look of his birthplace. As you explore independently, soak up the serene ambience that stays true to the Pope's vision, and marvel at the town’s beautiful ancient architecture. Be sure to look in the shops for Pienza's most famous product – Pecorino cheese!

As your day comes to an end, meet your guide back at the coach for the relaxing return journey to Rome.

Our tour guide was Andy but we were combined with a couple of other tour groups for the bus ride and for most of the day. The large size of the tour was unexpected and it was sometimes difficult to manage the crowds but the tour guides did do a good job of herding everyone and keeping to schedule. The tour itself was amazing stopping by a hilltop medieval village, learning the history and touring the square. After the village we stopped by a famous monastery then had lunch at a winery. The food and of course the wine were amazing! A final stop before heading back was a village with some free time to do some shopping and take in the sights. At each stop and throughout the bus ride there was plenty of opportunity to take in the gorgeous Tuscan countryside. Throughout the tour our guide was great at giving us some history of the region. On the way back to Rome he stopped by everyone's seat to give recommendations for dining in Rome from the perspective of someone who has lived there for years. We tried most of his recommendations and they were spot on. Overall we would recommend the tour just for the views of Tuscany alone but there is so much more to see and experience throughout the day on this tour.

Such a well spent day! The sights and villages visited were gorgeous, and the food and wines we had were divine. Our guide Andy was extremely knowledgable and made the tour even better. Thank you for a great day trip!

Great tour. Guide was very knowledgeable. Time was too short for this area but what we saw in a day was great. Lunch at the winery was very good. If you are limited on the amount of time you can spend in Tuscany, this is the tour for you.

If you only have 1 day to see Tuscany while you are staying in Rome, this is the tour to take! We met at Piazza del Popolo, which is a very central location not far from the Vatican, and boarded our buses between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM. We rode on the buses comfortable seats and air-conditioned for about an hour and a half before stopping at a rest stop where we were able to get coffee, pastries, etc. After that, we drove to Montepulciano, where we had a 1 hour guided tour throughout the quaint town our guide, Claus, was excellent and very informative! The next stop was Montalcino, where we had the opportunity to see the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, which is a beautiful French style church surrounded by Tuscan landscape. Luckily, the church was only a 5 minute drive from our next stop, where we had our lunch and wine tasting. The tasting consisted of 1 white wine, 3 red wines, and a dessert wine, and lunch was composed of a board with some cheeses and meats, lasagna, and cookies and cakes for dessert. It was delicious, and the room where we ate was surrounded by barrels that stored the wines we tasted, including the famous Brunello. We had free time to walk through the vineyards after to take some pictures, and we also had the opportunity to buy the wines for a very affordable price. Finally, our last stop was the small town of Pienza, known for its honey and pecarino cheese. We had 45 mins. of free time here, which felt a bit rushed, but it was nice to be free of the group for a little while. All of the towns are incredibly picturesque, with tons of small shops pottery, leather, cheeses, etc.. On our way home, we stopped at the rest stop again for chance to buy some of the local foods and try some more wine, and then we arrived back in Rome around 8:00 PM. Our guides, Peter and Andy, were absolutely top notch, and I could not recommend them enough. They gave us so much background info about the wines we would be tasting, the region itself, and lots of great advice about places to eat back in Rome, how to avoid being taken advantage of as a tourist, and they helped many of us plan the remaining days of our trip. My only gripe with this tour is that the bus ride through the small towns involves a lot of twists and turns on hilltops, and at times it was a bit nauseating. If you get car sick easily like me, this may be something to think about, otherwise it is a very peaceful ride with great scenic views. Other than that, this tour was very well organized and I could not have asked for a better day in Tuscany!

Claudia was a perfect guide I also liked the local guide, Sarah. This was my favorite part of my trip to Italy. We had a delicious lunch at the cutest vineyard. Highly recommend.

The trip was fantastic. Since we do not rent cars and drive around Tuscany, it is a great way to see the towns that are not easily accessible. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. I would take this tour again.

We thoroughly enjoyed this one-day tour, led by Jonathan. As an American who has lived in Rome for many years, Jon relayed history and culture and the land in a way that showed his love of and respect for Italy, as well as a great sense of humor. This was a great addition to our Rome visit, providing a relaxing day out of the city and the opportunity to soak in some beautiful countryside and wine!. We would have liked to have explored each stop a little more, but the tour made the most of 12 hours and we highly recommend it.

This was hands down my favorite experience of all our Rome trip! We had Claudia as our tour guide and she was marvelous. Extremely personable, funny, knowledgeable and she genuinely wanted everyone to have a perfect time. Tuscany is more beautiful than you could possibly imagine. The 3 town stops made wrre all incredibly picturesque! There was ample time to explore and enjoy. The lunch/wine tasting was a joy! My only wish was that there was more wine to taste we bought a bottle of the white we liked it so much. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Rome, it was worth every penny!

What a wonderful excursion. Would highly recommend it. Have been to most places, on own previously, but with theViator professional guide at the helm it made the experience all that much better. Here knowledge, humor, presentation and tips where beyond expectations. What made it memorable was the guide spending time with each member/couple personally. She made the trip very personable, as if we were the only ones on the bus, then on to the next couple. Was great.

This tour is the culmination of my recent trip to Rome. Our tour guide is so knowledgeable about the history of Rome. Tuscany is the place to go if you are overwhelmed with the tourist in the City. One of the stop is in Montepulciano which my husband and I enjoyed most inspite of the hilly climb on the cobbled streets of Montepulciano. We also enjoyed the cheese tasting in Pienza. Our tour bus broke down after our lunch at a winery but our tour guide Kylie was so quick in taking care of the problem. This tour is highly recommended.

Our tour guide was Andy. He was the most amazing tour guide! He was knowledgeable and humorous! He made the tour. He knew EVERYTHING about all the stops AND in between! Andy also helped with Tourist Tips, other tours, and any questions you had regarding this tour or any other tour offered in any part of Italy, not just Tuscany. We took 5 tours in Italy. Andy made this tour the best! If you take this tour, hope Andy is your tour guide.

Very good tour. Beautiful towns, visited Multipulciano, Monticatini and Pienza. Would have liked more time in Multipulciano. Lunch and wine tasting was great in Montecatini. Views of the Valle d' Orca we're magnificent. A lot of walking in Multipulciano -uphill. I recommend these bus tours have a step stool available to make getting on bus easier. Very high step. Pienza was nice but not much going on.

The tour itinerary and guide were excellent. It was a wonderful day away from the crowds of Rome. The guide was exceptional providing so much information well beyond expectations. There was one negative on they day. The bus transportation was not good. The seating was extremely cramped. It was a long day tour, and the lack of leg room on the bus made for a very uncomfortable ride.

Review by:   Charis L,    November 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Montepuciano is beautiful. The shopping looks good but we were not given any time to shop. Not at all. Just herded on in order to cover some spots with some history. Stopped for some time at Pienza later in the day but the shopping is a far cry from what's available at Montepuciano. The itinerary should allow for those who wants to spend their time shopping to meet at a designated location at the end, instead of being forced to follow the group.

A full day but a wonderful day. Small group and informative guide. Transport was comfortable for a day trip. A great way to experience the countryside outside Rome even though we had been to Tuscany before. Visited places we had not previously been to and of course the scenery was spectacular. Recommend this trip for anyone who has not been to Tuscany or just want to quickly revisit the area .

This was one of the best tours we've been on, as our Guide Anna and the local guide were just terrific, allowing for time and yet kept the excursion on track with a great deal of history of all facets of Italian culture. We loved every minute of this trip and have recommended this highly to our friends that will be traveling to Italy!

This was amazing. After 5 days in Rome, we went on this tour. It takes you by a luxury coach with huge windows so you can see everything without straining. We left bright and early, meeting at Piazza de Popolo, which we got to by cab. They were on time and Annlin was so warm and welcoming. She learned our names and who was in our party so she could be sure we were seated together during lunch. We stopped a number of times for bathroom breaks when they were needed. The first town is quite a hike 20 minutes up a hill, through the town and then down the other side. Great for medieval history buffs. They were filming the day we were there so many people in costumes for us to enjoy. This evidently happens frequently there. Beautiful views. We drove through the Tuscan countryside Under the Tuscan Sun was filmed here. We missed the sunflowers but the hillsides were still beautiful with the mountains as a backdrop. Lunch was at a private estate, where we sat at tables in a room full of wine barrels. We had wine with each of the courses of the meal. They were exceptional and we left with 4 bottles, one from each of the courses we had. The tour guide is so knowledgeable about food, wine, history, languages, church history, political history of the area, etc. There wasnt a question we could stump her with. She made recommendations for avoiding tourist traps and where to find good food where the locals eat. She taught us about the habits of Italians and how foods vary depending on where in Italy you are. After this tour, you should be able to avoid getting ripped off by non-local items. The last stop was another small town. Then back to Rome after a long day. The bus driver was fantastic also. Lots of windy roads that he knew how to handle safely. I would highly recommend this tour. We left at 7:30 am and got back to Rome 8 pm. The tour says it is not wheelchair accessible, but if you can get on and off the bus using steps, there is a place for storing a collapsible wheelchair for use off the bus. It would have been helpful if we had brought the wheelchair for my mom for waking around the towns. The first one she waited in the bus for us. Enjoy!
