Bavarian Mountains and Salt-Mines Tour from Salzburg

Salzburg, Austria

Explore the underground world of a centuries-old Bavarian mine on a half-day tour from Salzburg. Choose from a morning or afternoon experience, and travel along the snaking Deutsche Alpenstrasse through the picturesque Bavarian Alps. With a skip-the-line ticket, head inside Berchtesgaden Salt Mines to explore with a guide and see its underground sights by foot, mini-train and boat. Return to daylight for a short tour of Berchtesgaden before your return to Salzburg.

Choose from two start times and make your way to the meeting point in central Salzburg. Leave the city by coach and travel along the Deutsche Alpenstrasse, a magnificent road that cuts through the Bavarian Alps. Admire the backdrop of alpine scenery as you pass alongside the banks of Königsee River, and then stop at Obersalzberg where Berchtesgaden Salt Mines await.

Head inside the centuries-old mine, and get changed into a traditional miner’s uniform, which is provided as you enter. Hear some of the history of the site, and learn about the salt mining traditions in Berchtesgaden that date back to the 12th century.

Using the same slides as hundreds of miners before you, descend to the grottos of the mines with your guide and explore the subterranean salt world by foot and mini-train. Watch a short film to learn about the origins of the salt deposits, and finish your underground trip on a high note with a raft cruise around the lake.

Return back to ground level, hand back your miner’s uniform and travel onward to the town of Berchtesgaden. Take a short tour of the town before your return to central Salzburg.

Really great trip, Walter the driver/guide was excellent, had to relay all info. in two languages, he gave us so much info. on route. Scenery on route to the mines was beautiful. Trip round the mines was interesting, exhilarating on the slides and beautiful going across the water with the light show. Well worth doing.

Good times! Loved the wooden ramps we slid down!

The kids enjoyed this one. Dressing up as a miner, taking the train, and the slides were all fun to do. It was also a fun way to learn about the mining operation. Native German speakers have an added advantage of having the tour guide speak - all others have a device to listen to.

The experienceog going down the slide was fun but the actual tour was boring. The lighting was almost non existant and you spent a large part of the time making sure you didn't trip over. In the cave with the lake we saw some yound children playing the recorderd which was pretty but I think this was only there as it was Christmas Eve. It was advertised that we would visit a village on the way but we only were given a toilet break there. i don't beleive it was worth the time or money.

The tour was a lot of fun. Taking photos is not permitted, but they take photos which you can purchase for 5 euros on the way out. Lots of walking required, not for the faint of heart!

Was a lot more interesting than I expected. The drive to get there is beautiful also. They say no pictures but many people were taking pictures and wished I had. Might be a little overpriced but we did skip the lines and I didn't really want to spend an hour in the small town prior to going to the mine.

We enjoyed the Salt Mine Tour. There were some issues with the communication technology but that did not hamper the experience all that much. Would return.

The Tour is very good at Christmas time especially the stop at Berchtesgaden. The salt mine is good too, but beware, they do not allow you to take any of your own photos, or video in the mine as they use safety as a reason. But frankly I think its more to do with selling you the photos they take as you go round....

This tour was a lot of fun. The guides were funny and I think I enjoyed the drive through the mountains with them more than the salt mine tour itself!

One of the most interesting places to visit where the beautiful sights are below the ground instead of towering to the sky. A must see location when visiting Salzburg.

Our guide, Wolfgang, was the best. We really appreciated his personal spin on things. His English was excellent and, he went out of his way to make our tour as good as possible. His explanations were very detailed. The weather wasn't the best for sightseeing but, he managed to find good vistas for us anyway. The tour of the salt mines was very interesting but, a little hokey at times. I got the feeling they were trying to sort of Disneyland it. Still, very informative and lots of fun, especially the slides.

This tour was just okay. I was expecting to see salt and learn more than I did about the mining. This tour felt rushed. The best part was the coach ride through the countryside to get to the mine.

Loved this tour first time I did it in 2012, so went back again 2017. Slides in the mine are great fun.

Very nice tour - unless one is claustrophobic. Unfortunately you are unable to take any pictures underground and they only take one of you during the visit. There is NO reason why photography is not allowed.

My family and I would highly recommend this tour to any and all! We traveled to Salzburg from Germany and stayed for two nights. We decided to do the Salt Mine Tour not fully realizing that the actual mine was in Germany! An oversight on my part, but it had zero impact on our enjoyment of the day. The checkin process in Salzburg was easy and simple. The tour bus clean and safe. The tour guide and driver were delightful. The mine staff too were awesome, efficient and friendly. The mine tour itself is very well done, you left feeling like you learned a little about history and culture while having a little adventure at the same time. The tour is appropriate and engaging for ALL ages. After the salt mine tour, our tour guide provided some recommendations in the little town we stopped at for lunch. We took his suggestions and had a lovely lunch before heading back into Salzburg. It was well worth the money spent to have the bus take you to the mine and have the tour guide get you right to the front of the entrance at the mine no wait. And the lunch in the town of Berchtesgaden was an added bonus, capping off a delightful day!

Had a blast. I love caves so this was up my alley. The slides were so much fun. The only complaint is that they could do without the weird laser show that is shown on the wall of the salt lake as you boat across it. Would have preferred lights in the cave to see the formations as we boated across.

This was one of THE BEST tours we went on while in Europe! Our Salt Mines tour guide was Irish Bavarian so you can imagine the cheekiness of him! We laughed a LOT, but the tour was very informative too - I was worried it would be a boring history/information class but no...a few slides down the mines - what a hoot! We didn't really see much of the mountains really as we were picking up and dropping off people on other tours - but enough to enjoy the view.

The Tour was enjoyable but the Guide in the actual Salt Mine was not very good or personable. Visiting Berchtesgaden was wonderful but more time here would have made this a whole lot more enjoyable.

Our group of 8 had a fun afternoon of driving through the beautiful Bavarian Mountains to the salt mines. We felt the tour was a lot of fun. The information you learn about salt mining was really cool! The kids also enjoyed the small train ride down into the mines. We definitely felt a little rushed to stay on schedule but understood that they want everyone to get the full experience in a timely manner. Once down in the mines, you get to ride on a couple slides and then boat across a very small and its dark lake. Ended with a little taste of the salt and back up on the train. I would recommend this tour. Our group enjoyed the learned information and the sights to and from the mines, on the bus, were breathtaking.

Enjoyable trip. Knowledgeable tour guide Walter. We went through some very scenic routes towards Bavaria, hearing a lot of history and tips. We and our group were the first to enter, properly dressed as miners. No photography allowed. But they take photos which are later offered for sale. Great.

Fun experience. One concern is the coveralls that you have to wear into the mine. My wife wound up with a rash we suspect from the coveralls that they probably don't wash very often. Enjoyed the brief chance to grab refreshments in the quaint town. Also, don't even think about eating on the bus!

Great trip, well organised fun and informative. The taxi picked us up close to our hotel and took us through some lovely countryside across the boarder into Germany, we glimpsed the Eagles nest which was the highlight of the trip for me as this was somewhere I wanted to visit but it doesn't open until May. The mine was great with the little train which takes you down into it and the slides are great fun too. The best bit is the mirror lake which you cross in a boat, not something you would expect underground. Definatley recommend this trip well worth the money too.

Beautiful tour with great guide! We lucked out and it was snowing during our drive through the mountains, so that made for some breathtaking photos. Cutest little towns along the way, too. Very interesting. The salt mines tour was great. Best part was the slide!

Great tour as the salt mines are impressive. My 13 year-old also loved it. If you are comming from Austria, it is recommended to take your passport and the mines are in Germany.

Luciano our tour guide was very knowledgeable and really went out of his way to give us a good tour. He was amazing and made the experience, the salt mines were ok and would be fun for children but i am a bit claustrophobic so it was hard for me in some ways. However I did the slides, the boat and the funicular back up to the top so it wasnt that bad! The journey there was wonderful and very scenic so thankyou! also credit to the staff at the booth .. very helpful and friendly!

Not your typical tour - train ride into the mines, wooden slides to get you down into the mines, a boat ride and it was educational of the actual mining of salt. Fun had by all

We did the salt mines tour and absolutely loved it. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable in all facets. They were extremely adept at handling tour members who were always late for departure and very good. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone including families with children.

It was good. The most enjoyable part was going to the small town on the way back from the mines. There were Xmas markets, little cafes etc and it was a nice experience. There is a graveyard there which looks magical in the snow.

Fun 1/2 day tour away from Salzburg. The only thing is they combine 2 tours on the bus Salt Mines and Eagle's Nest that can cause confusion. The bus drops off the Eagle's Nest tour at their gathering point, and then continues on to Berchtesgarden for the Salt Mines Tour. This tour includes a mini train ride and 2 slides deep within the mountain - all kids would enjoy this part.

Could have used another hour in Berchtesgaden. The video on the bus on the way back to Salzburg was nice, but it looped over and over again -- boring.
