Eagles Nest in Berchtesgaden Tour from Salzburg

Salzburg, Austria

Visit Kehlsteinhaus, better known as the Eagle’s Nest, on a half-day tour from Salzburg. Journey through the spectacular scenery of Königsee River Valley and the Bavarian Alps to Obersalzberg, and then continue to the clifftop Eagle’s Nest by shuttle bus and elevator. After bypassing the crowds with a skip-the-line ticket, tour Hitler’s former retreat with a knowledgeable guide, and soak up the alpine views before returning to Salzburg.

Meet at Mirabellplatz, and travel from Salzburg to the Bavarian Alps. Your route takes in idyllic scenery alongside notable sights, so gaze out as you travel to see Hellbrunn Castle, the Königsee River Valley and mountains dotted with farmhouses.

Stop at Obersalzberg, a mountainside hamlet near Berchtesgaden. Then, relax on a 20-minute shuttle bus journey and admire the surrounding alpine beauty as you snake your way up a cliff-clinging pass. Worry not: your bus has special brakes to cope with the terrain.

Cast your eyes across to the mountain of Hoher Göll, and then step aboard a brass elevator, which was built to shuttle Hitler’s guests through the cliffs to Eagle’s Nest. Hop out at the top to head straight inside with your skip-the-line ticket.

As you explore with your guide, see the spots where Hitler hosted his meetings and learn all about the site, which was built for the Nazi leader’s 50th birthday. Perched at an altitude of some 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), the Eagle’s Nest boasts handsome views and your guide will point out the finest vantage points.

After an hour, return to your coach by elevator and bus. Stop in Berchtesgaden for lunch (own expense), and then return to Salzburg.

This tour was really good, just to see a piece of history, all be it not pleasant history. It is worth doing just for the views.

This is a really good tour and an easy way to see Eagles Nest from Salzburg. It is a big bus tour, but it still gets the job done and the tour guide offered excellent insights while on the bus. We benefited from a lovely day, and going to Eagles Nest is really about the amazing views rather a deep dive into history. The lunch stop in Berchtesgaden was also great and we had just the right amount of time for both stops. Definitely a worthwhile tour!

It was a rainy, cold and moody day but it couldn't have been more beautiful. Highly recommend hiking a bit around the Eagle's Nest. The bus tour up the road was great too and it was nice to be out in the countryside. Lunch in the little village was delicious.

amazing day tour from Salzburg. The views of the Alps are absolutely amazing from here and the history of Eagles Nest provided by our guide was informative.

The drive up was good and the town stop on the way back but it was so foggy we couldnt see 3 feet in front of us! Unfortunate but Im sure it would be great on a better day.

What a place to visit and what a lot of history._br/_ We went here on a very wet day. We saw nothing of the view but that was preferable to vertiginous drops. The gentleman manning the lift from the bus parking area to the Eagle's Nest was straight out of Nazi Germany, a dangerous character who gave visitors a push to urge them out of the lift at a faster pace._br/_ Our guide was an older man with an Australian accent. He was unhelpful and authoritarian, like a teacher taking a class on a school tour. I noticed another tourist explaining to him that she would not tolerate his attitude. A well versed, respectful guide is necessary on a paid day excursion.

The trip was well organized. Tour guide was interesting and knowledgeable. _br/_ Booking was simple. Highly recommend the tour! Check the weather forecast when booking if possible. The view is spectacular. A cloudy day will diminish your enjoyment of the surrounding mountains.

Great tour! Don't even think of leaving Salzburg without visiting the Eagle's Nest. WW2 history aside, the views of the Austrian/German Alps is breathtaking!

Didn't go bad weather up the mountain

Great trip, extremely interesting. Unbelievable scenery as well as a very strong sense of history. The fact that snow was lying at the top added to the experience, though any more and the trip would have been cancelled.Very well organised and well looked after by our humorous guide! I would definitely go back and would like time to look around the area where the Berghof once stood.

Well worth a visit and would have been better in a smaller group. I would have liked much more time to explore on the mountain itself. A little rushed to soak up the ambience of the brass lift and the building.

You can do this tour in 1/2 day - which I liked. We were lucky to have amazing weather in mid October. The views are breathtaking and our guide was very informative. Once on the top of the mountain you have some time to wonder on your own and take advantage of photo opportunities.

Got lucky and had beautiful weather, especially considering snow closed it a few days previous. The guides were very entertaining and made the trip go far too quickly. :-

Tour guide and bus driver were great. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the bus driver was funny. The weather on this day was not great but that is not a factor into the lower rating. The Eagles Nest itself was a bit of a let down. 80 of the building is now a restaurant so the history of the building is only really shown in a handful of places. If you go here for the views then it will go above and beyond what you are looking for, if you are a history buff then it will be a letdown. Berchtesgaden was pretty much shutdown for the day because it was a German holiday. With that in mind I think they should have not offered this tour on this day or modified it. We spent in hour there with not much to do.

We liked the tour. It was a little quick could have almost made a day of it. The Eagles Nest was really neat but the weather didn't cooperate. It was cold and raining with sleet but that is not the tours fault. Would have like to have seen more of the area around the Berghof but we quickly drove by it. Would have like to explored Berchtesgarden more. We had only an hour and had to rush lunch.

The tour of Eagles Nest was truly amazing. The bus ride was exciting but very scary with the narrow road and how high into the mountains we travelled. The scenery was beyond anything I have ever seen. However, the guided tour was not very guided. Once we were up on the Eagles Nest we were left to ourselves to look around without a tour guide.

The tour guide was very information, we were able to walk the grounds however, the weather was cloudy and it was a dreary day, therefore, it was not as enjoyable as it could have been. No fault of anyone. I would take this tour again, on a sunny day. The views would have been amazing to see.

Convenient and easy to find tour starting point in Salzburg. Guide could have been better. Showed personal pictures on the ride back to Salzburg and we would have rather had more information on history, etc. Buses were clean and tour was early in the morning so we beat a lot of the people coming up for the day. In other words it was less crowded at the top. The time spent at the top was less then expected. it was only a little over an hour which doesn't give you a lot of time to explore but it was still fascinating. Lunch was held in Berchtesgaden. Town is nice and it was a nice place for lunch. It is not covered in the fee though.

Very good tour and very informative. Our guide was insightful and entertaining. The whole thing was very well organized. The group was very large so if you’re ok with large tour groups you’ll be fine. I’d say there were over sixty of us and didn’t expect the group to be that big but it was very good

The tour was great. Walter was a great tour guide, and kept everyone one schedule. You don't have much time to view the sights at Eagles Nest but going with the tour did keep us from having to wait in very long lines, which was well worth the euros. That said, it seems if you don't go with the tour, you have to pick a time to return, as the elevator and shuttle travel needs to be regulated. The day we went was beautiful and sunny and we could see for miles. Still would recommend the tour.

unfortunately for myself, after waiting most of my adult life to visit this unique place, the night before they had the first snow storm of the year and the road to the Eagles Nest was blocked. i was offered a full refund or another tour on that morning and we decided to visit the salt mine, it was ok and the guide John was knowledgeable. we realize it is nobody's fault but it was still most disappointing.

A well-organized and informative trip. Our tour guide, Walter, was entertaining and knowledgeable. The bus ride was a pleasant drive up to the base where we transferred to smaller shuttle buses for the last leg. A solid brass elevator that Hitler himself used took us to the top. Once up in the Eagle's Nest, we found it was important to view the photographs and read about the events that took place there. This made the viewing of the various rooms and locations much more meaningful. Although there was some cloud while we were there, the views were still breathtaking. On our return trip, we stopped at a lovely little town, Berchtesgaden, for lunch. Overall, a very worthwhile and historical tour.

Eagles Nest was impressive and the mountains were beautiful. Our tour guide and driver were very friendly and informative. We were there early ahead of the long lines. It was a brisk day but the clouds were only on the tops of the mountains so the views were wonderful.

Bus ride to Eagles nest. Very much depended upon the weather. The town of Berchtesgaden was nice but it felt like we did not have much time in the town

Loved this tour. The historical insight was priceless. The views from the terrace are too beautiful to describe. The coach ride was very pleasant and the stop for lunch gave good choices for excellent food. There is an absolutely incredible Bakery close to the restaurants. Don't miss it. This tour is well worth the price.

We met the bus at the Mirabellplatz in town, a full size bus not a shuttle. Really knowledgeable guide who pointed out places of interest on the way and provided great information at the site. When we reached the base of the mountain we switched to other full size buses which made their winding way up the mountain. At the top we walked into the mountain where there was a large polished brass elevator, which the guide informed us could hold about 50 people, but because Hitler was claustrophobic he only allowed 3 or 4 others and the highly polished brass made the space seem bigger. Fortunately the weather was good and not cloudy. They close this tour in Oct or Nov depending on the weather. At the top the view was phenomenal. The building is stone on the outside with beautiful woodwork inside. There is a restaurant inside also. Outside there is a huge patio, places to sit and a small hut where you can get hot chocolate and souvenirs.

The day that we booked the tour was canceled due to road conditions, but so glad that we opted to stay in Salzburg longer the next day and take the tour. Walter was a great guide and the weather was beautiful. I personally would have like to stay in Berchtesgaden for more than the hour lunch stop. 1.5-2 hours would have been perfect to eat and then explore a bit, maybe shorten the time at Eagles Nest by 30 minutes.

I can't give a very accurate review of this tour because of the poor weather we experienced. The guide was well informed and gave us lots of information on the Eagles Nest so that part was excellent. However it was raining and started snowing right as we got to the top so our view was nil. Would like to do this tour again in the summer when the weather would be better.

Beautiful views enhanced by perfect weather. The site is very crowded but they have developed an excellent system for handling the crowds. Somehow I expected there to be more evidence of Nazi history but a conscious decision was made to not turn the site into a museum. The visited to the village of Berchtesgaden Sunday was pleasant. Our guide was very good and had a very good sense of umor,
