Salzburg Super Saver: Original Sound of Music and Salt Mines Day Trip

Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg Super Saver combines two half-day trips into one memorable day offering great value for money. Start the morning with a tour through the Bavarian mountains and visit the 450-year old Salt Mines before spending the afternoon discovering the film locations of the Sound of Music. The perfect choice if your time in Salzburg is limited.

Bavarian Mountains and Salt Mines

On leaving Salzburg the journey takes us along the King's Lake river to the picturesque Alpenstrasse. Upon arrival at the mines slip into traditional miners' clothes and enter the mines to hear historical and legendary tales of the fascinating underground world. Using the same slides as hundreds of miners before, descend to the grottos, the magical world beneath the surface of the earth. You end your adventure with a raft sail across the famous salt lake, accompanied by eerie, mystical sounds.

Original Sound of Music Tour

Highlights of the Original Sound of Music Tour, recommended by Maria von Trapp, include a tour of Mirabell Gardens, where Maria and the children danced to 'Do-Re-Mi', and the opportunity to view the wedding church at Mondsee. In between film locations you can relax and listen to the famous songs and lyrics from the film, including 'Edelweiss', 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' and of course the glorious title song 'The Sound of Music'. The tour also takes in the historical and architectural landmarks in the city of Salzburg, as well as a part of the picturesque lake district.

Both parts were great! belongings stay on bus while in mine so plan accordingly. No photos in the mine but I bought the ones they took at the end- 5 euros- so stick some euros in your pocket if you plan to do this. Went from one activity to the next, so glad I brought some snacks. Loved singalong!

My 16 year old granddaughter and I loved the Salt Mines tour, the train into the mountain was good and the slides amazing, even though they looked challenging to say the least. Would have gone again if we could, the photos they take are only 5 Euros, which compared to anything similar in the UK is a fair price. Would have liked to have bought a guide book showing the tour, as they discourage guests taking photos, probably as lots of flashes would spoil it for other people. Would recommend this tour for such fun._br/_ The Sound of Music tour in the afternoon was also enjoyable but more crowded. Loved seeing the locations from the film and lots of back ground stories. A lot of people on our coach were reluctant to sing along which was a shame, but our guide Ana was very good and tried to get everyone involved. Watched the film on my return home and loved seeing where we had been. Also recommended for lovers of the film.

This is essentially two tours combined which does save some money. We did the Salt Mines Tour in the morning and the Sound of Music in the afternoon. Both tours were excellent. The guides were very knowledgable. We learned quite a lot about the history of Salzburg. The Sound of Music Tour is worth doing even if you never saw the movie. Both tours give you the opportunity to visit the country side and both stop in lovely Austrian villages. The Sound of Music Tour takes you out to the lake district and to Mondsee Cathedral where the wedding scene in the movie was filmed. Be prepared however for the Sing a Long on the way back.

Amazing tour! So much fun to see all the sites!

Review by:   Bridget B,    October 2017 Review: 5 star rating: Highly Recommended
After reading the many reviews I believe that what separates these tours from very good and great is the quality of the tour guide. Ours was okay but someone who gets the whole bus involved with the singing etc would make it a lot more fun. It was amazing to us how The Sound of Music is an international phenomenon except in Austria we learned! We had dinner with 3 lovely Chinese women and they were able to sing all of the the songs! It was fun to learn more about the making of the movie! The second half was a drive to the mountains where Hitler had his headquarters in WWII and a visit to the saltmines and lunch in Berchetsgadens. I was very disappointed to learn that I had signed up for the wrong tour as I had meant to go to Hallstaat but we made the best of it and enjoyed the other tour as well.

Really enjoyed the salt mine tour. Interesting and entertaining! Although my husband thought the Sound of Music tour was a little cheesy, he ended up enjoying the sites and we both thought our tour guide and driver were a HOOT! They kept us laughing! Would recommend both tours.

The Sound of Music tour was very informative and the tour guide was wonderful but I think your overall enjoyment has more to do with how much you like The Sound of Music._br/_ The Salt Mine Tour was ruined for us by a group of teenage boys who were very loud and rude throughout the whole tour. The guide wasn't much older than the boys and he did not try to quiet them. I could not wait for it to end to get away from the obnoxious group of boys

Sound of music tour was very fun and informative. Our tour lady Anna was amazing. The bus trip out to the Lake District was nice and we enjoyed a lovely lunch there._br/_ The salt mine was a little disappointing after we'd been to the salt mine in Poland

The sound of music was the best tour and the tour guide ana made it an experience to remember. She was the best tour guide for the sound of music and she sings very well, it felt like we were in the movie. Anybody who gets this tour get ana. She is not any other tour guide, every guide should be her

the salt mines day trip was great, we went through Hitler's HQ and saw the eagle's nest on our way to the salt mines. the Sound of Music tour is not for you if you are not a massive fan of the movie

Great tour of Sound of Music movie locations. Our guide was a trained singer and her singing made it extra special.

Review by:   Gillian L,    July 2017 Review: 1 star rating: I do not recommend this
I was so disappointed with this tour. The salt mines section was organised terribly. You share a bus with people doing the eagles nest tour and spend half the time driving them to and from their activities. In the first 5 hours you only have 1h for salt mines and 1 for lunch. The rest is on the bus!

This tour and the guide were amazing! When people ask us about Salzburg, the guide from this tour is always in our story. The tour was fun and happy and made for a great way to see the countryside. I would not miss this while visiting.

Kirstl was wonderful! She fit the image of Maria and led the group sing-a-long well!! Thank you so much for a great trip to see the sights of a wonderful movie and sharing your home Salzburg with us. The Salt Mine Trip was awesome! It was more than what we expected. Definitely a worthwhile trip!

The tour was fabulous! It was wonderful seeing all the Sound of Music sights, and the scenery was beautiful. The salt mine was so much fun. We loved the wooden slides in the tour. The guides were fun and knowledgeable. Walter was our guide for the salt mine portion and was fun and interesting.

I traveled with my family to Salzburg just for a couple of days and wanted to have some good local sight-seeing options. I found this Super saver to be a good deal. It was quite nicely planned. Actually its a combination of 2 separate tours, viz. Salt mines and Saound of music.

We first took the Sound of Music tour in the morning. It was a great tour for any Sound of Music fan as we were brought to many of the actual sites where the movie was shot. Even though the movie itself is more then 50 years old, it felt as if the scenes just happened yesterday. The tour took us to many breath-taking scenes in the Austrian countryside. What made the tour even more enjoyable was our guide Peter who was not just very knowledgeable about the movie and Salzburg in general. He made the tour really fun by leading us in singing of some SOM songs. This is really an excellent tour.

Myself and two coworkers took this tour and we loved it! It was so much fun to walk the areas and sing Sound of Music songs on the bus._br/_ The salt mine tour was better than I expected. Not only did we go to the salt mine, but we stopped at other locations along the way. It was very informative. One of my favourite parts was going down the slides inside the mine.

Fabulous combo trip! Enjoyed the Salt Mines immensely. Our guide was Walter and he was well-knowledgeable and excellent. The clouds weren't cooperating with us that morning but he did try hard to give us a chance to view the Eagle's Nest. The Salt Mine tour was incredible-far exceeded my expectations. The Sound of Music tour also gave the chance to see some great sites that were used during the movie. Was glad I did the combo tour but if you have to choose one over the other, choose the Salt Mines!

So I think the company needs to tell people who have booked this tour what they will not be seeing on the tour. I saved all the Sound of Music Salzburg sites for the tour, thinking they would be part of it, and the bus only stopped to point things out rather than letting us go out and see them and take photos. I saved the tour for the second day of my trip and I was leaving the next day so I had no chance to actually see the Abbey, cemetery, or festival location, because it was dark and everything was closed. Please let the people know what they have to see on their own.

Sound of Music tour was fun, but skip Salt Mines. Not worth it. Would and #39;ve rather spent my time exploring Salzburg than driving to Germany for a glorified light show. Might be funner for kids (train, slide, lights).

This was certainly good value for money. We went to the Salt Mines in the morning before returning to Salzburg for an hours break before boarding the coach for the Sound of Music Tour. _br/_ Unfortunately it was a really wet and dull day with fog hanging over the mountains for the duration of our tour so we didn't get to see the mountains or the view from them! The Salt Mines were amazing. Our tour guide took us in to get the overalls before the doors were opened to the general public which was a bonus. The slides descending into the lower levels are a must. You have the option to purchase a theme park style photo of your descent which isn't overly priced at 5 Euro._br/_ Our afternoon Sound of Music Tour was great, visiting all of the major locations used in the film. Our guide was very knowledgeable and provided lots of facts about the true story of the Von Trapp family as well as the story told in the film. We weren't too keen reading other reviews that there would be sing-a-longs but in actual fact it was great and even the not so keen joined in!

Wonderful way to see some of the sights from the musical. The Salt mine tour was a nice surprise. We thought it was a simple tour through a cave. But it was ride on a mine bucket through the mine, then we slid down a long slide, then took a short boat ride on a salt lake inside the mine. Got a taste of salt water from the mine. Certain different and fun way to learn about the how salt is mined in Bavaria.

Had an amazing day trip with Panaroma tours, even though the weather was grey and cloudy. Carlos our guide was entertaining and factual and his driving partner drove us safely up and down the mountains. The salt mine tour was fun with slides, light shows and a boat trip across the water in the cave. _br/_ The afternoon tour to scenes filmed for the Sound of Music was good too. We got to sing songs on the coach and we learnt many facts along the way. Best part was seeing the backdrop of the lake.

An absolutely fantastic experience. We were doing a tour of Northern Austria ourselves and so for the mostpart we sorted ourselves with days out however we wanted to ensure we saw all of the sights for the Sound of Music and so decided a tour with a guide was the best way to do it. We were certainly not disappointed at all. Our tour guide was very funny and so informative. We learnt so much about the film, the original Von Trapps and other intriguing facts as well including the fact that not many Austrians know about the Sound of Music! We visited all of the relevant sights with an hour stop in Mondsee where we could walk round the Church where they filmed the wedding scene and also look at the gift shops. We had Sound of Music songs on the coach as well as a documentary video on the way back. An absolute must for any Sound of Music fan!

We loved this combo trip day tour. We only had a short time to visit Salzburg and we packed 2 great tours into 1 day. We met up with the tour guide at Mirabelle Platz. Viator group staff is prompt and courteous. Our tour guide was Johannes who kept us on schedule and had a great sense of rumor. The Salt Mines are a fun, interesting tour. Everyone slips on official salt miner coveralls, takes a little train into the salt mine for a few minutes claustrophobics may get a little sketched but the train moves moderately so arriving at a platform where one can take the wooden slide down keep hands on body - not holding the rail - don't forget to smile for the camera or one can walk/carry little ones down the pathway to arrive at the next level where the narrative part of the tour really begins. Translation devices for English, Spanish and Italian ? are available. After walking and seeing vintage salt mine machines and pictures, a little boat is taken across a small 'lake' with a show of lights referring to salt creation. It's cool. It's really a splendid tour and fun for the whole family. It's a bit chilly in the mines and walking shoes are best. We had a great time! Highly recommend. In the afternoon, it was time for the Sound of Music tour. LOVED IT. We had a different tour guide this time who had a fun sense of rumor Peter. If you aren't knowledgeable about The Sound of Music movie, you will either believe everyone is knockers or you will have fun listening to those of us who love to sing along with the soundtrack! We learned that the other tour guide Ana is a professional singer, so you may really get to sing a lot on her tour. You will definitely enjoy the drive and history...perhaps even get motivated to learn about the Von Trapp family it is an interesting story after all! The scenery is beautiful - hopefully you can see it on a sunny, warm day like we did. Highly recommend, we felt we got our money's worth. We enjoyed every minute of it.

Salzburg by itself is worth the trip. The chance to see first hand some of the sites where the Sound of Music was filmed was a bonus. Our local guide Gabby provided a good bit of behind the scenes background and info. Salzburg is as lovely today as it was in the 1965 movie._br/_ The Salt Mines trip was interesting. Enjoyed the ride into the mine almost like being at Disneyland as well as the miners' slides. The crystal clear underground lake was amazing. Unfortunately, our tour guide was much more interested in explaining things in German to a handful of German-speaking guests and left his English-speaking guests who made up 90 of the tour to watch the videos at various sites through the tour. Glad I had a chance to see the mine and learn a bit about salt mining. Definitely won't look at my table salt the same now.

My partner was a bit ambivalent about undertaking the salt mine tour but now would say it has been one of the best we undertook. A really interesting experience. WOULD RATE THIS TOUR A FIVE._br/_ Unfortunately it rained throughout much of the sound of music tour. David did a great job keeping the spirits and interest up. The bus trip is a highlight given the lovely countryside. This tour would appeal to the real sound of music followers. It would help to have watched the movie in the not too distant past.
