Semenggok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre Tour from Kuching

Semonggok Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is located south of Kuching and is a sanctuary used to rehabilitation Orangutans which have been injured or captured. See the Orangutans roaming freely in the wild and experience their feeding time in this unique setting in the rain forest.

The best place in Sarawak to view semi-wild orangutans, who have been rescued from captivity and trained to survive in the surrounding forest reserve.

The rehabilitated animals roam freely in the rain forest, and often return to the centre at feeding time. Thanks to the successful breeding programme at Semonggok there is a good possibility of experiencing one of the most heart-warming sights in Borneo - an orangutan mother with a young baby.

The centre is a 30 minute drive from Kuching and another 20 minute by foot into the jungle. Along the way visitors pass by the ethno-botanical gardens, with their unique collection of rain-forest plants.

Semengok also has a number of short jungle trails and optional forest walks that can be incorporated into the tour.

This is a awesome tour for all ages. It is much better than the Sandacan tour unless you are staying in Sandican. You can get up close with the orangutans and do not have to trek far to do it. It is about an hour drive from town and the discription should state this. You only spend about 1 hour with the Orangutans.

It was better than going to a zoo but the orangutans are not completely wild and are lured by food to a place for tourists to see them. That being said, it was great to see two mothers and young babies, however most of the orangutans did not show up because at this time of the year most stay in the rainforest to feed on natural fruit - so there were far fewer orangutans appearing than I was led to believe.
