Small-Group Brunello di Montalcino Wine-Tasting Trip from Siena

Siena, Italy

Brunello di Montalcino, a collector’s favorite, is internationally recognized as one of the best Italian red wines. On this full-day guided tour from Siena, discover the cellars where these incredible wines age, meet the local producers, and learn about the passion that goes into making this wine. Enjoy a traditional Tuscan lunch at a winery and spend time relaxing at your leisure in the village of Montalcino before exploring the mystical abbey of Sant'Antimo. Visit a total of three wineries in the region, tasting unique creations at each one.

Numbers are limited to eight people on this small-group tour, ensuring you'll receive personalized attention from your guide.

Leave Siena in the morning and set off in a comfortable, air-conditioned minivan toward the famous wine hills of Montalcino in Italy’s Tuscany wine region. The first stop is at a small, traditional winery, where you'll walk among the vineyards, explore the cellars, and enjoy your first Brunello di Montalcino wine tasting of the day.

Next, arrive in Montalcino, the hilltop town that gives its name to the region and its wines. Here, you'll have the opportunity to walk around the walls of the fortress where brave soldiers of the Republic of Siena made their last stand to Florence during battles in medieval times. Explore this captivating town independently and visit the town’s stores, taste the famous Brunello wines, or simply enjoy the incredible views overlooking the valley below.

After your visit to Montalcino, continue your drive to a family-run winery, where you’ll be introduced to the owners and winemakers themselves. Visit the farm before sitting down to enjoy a traditional Tuscan meal (included) accompanied by delicious wines produced in this region.

After lunch, consisting of antipasti, pasta or risotto, desert, coffee and wine tastings, visit the stunning, ancient Benedictine abbey of Sant'Antimo, a special place radiating tranquility, set in a fabulous landscape. With your expert guide, explore the inside of the abbey and learn about its fascinating history. You may get the chance to witness the monks singing Gregorian chants as you enjoy the serene natural surroundings.

In the afternoon, head to a third winery, where you'll get a detailed explanation of the wine-making processes, learn about the tools used, discover how the vines are cared for, and learn about the long aging process in oak barrels that gives these wines their distinctive flavor. After visiting the cellars and getting to know the winemakers you can sit down for a last tasting of this 'Nectar of the Gods', before enjoying a relaxing ride back to Siena.

I signed up for the tour as I really wanted to get to the vineyards and enjoy the amazing panaromas of the region. Stafano, our guide, brought us to Montalcino. He gave us insights into the wine making and shared his knowledge with us. It was a small group that day and we all blended well. The stop at Montalcino itself was short, but it was super hot that day, I guess we disndi mind returning to the air-conditioned van. 3 very different vineyards, each unique in their own ways. I didn't feel we were rushed or hurried. But have enough time to ask questions, chill and take in the scenery. It was great!

This was our highlight in Siena. Domenico our guide was wonderful, we felt like family when the day was over. The wonderful wineries and the Tuscan lunch at the winery was perfect. Wines were delicious and we got so many beautiful pictures of the hills and vineyards. Definitely worth the time and the money

What an easy way to see the wonderful countryside, drink good wine, have a great lunch and learn many new facts about wine and the area from a great tour guide Danielle._br/_ There were 5 of us on this tour, very comfortable minibus and a great knowledgeable guide in Danielle, he certainly knows his stuff and made the day a pleasurable experience._br/_ All 3 wineries we visited were interesting experiences and though not all wines were great we enjoyed everywhere we went and would not change anything we experienced.

This tour was extraordinary. Every single detail was a beautiful surprise. Te wine is excellent and all the views around the Toscana are like heaven. Of course this tour would’ve not been that great without the espectacular guide Daniel. His knowledge was fundamental to catch our appreciation. :)

This was absolutely by far the best day we spent in all of Tuscany! Our guide Danielle was amazing! He was so passionate about the entire process of wine making that his enthusiasm was transferred to our group of 4 that were in his van! We visited 3 different wineries. They were all very unique with various specialties. Before each arrival, Danielle gave us background that was excellent to prepare us for the upcoming experience .I might add that he was quick to take my husband by van as close as possible to the area we would gather since my husband has a knee problem. At the second winery, we had a home cooked Tuscan lunch that I enjoyed as much as anything I had in my entire trip! It is possible to purchase wine if you wish...and of course, we did! The Tuscan countryside that we saw along the way was unbelievably beautiful and golden....just what I expected. For those of you wondering about bathroom stops, the first leg of the trip was about 40 minutes and then we stopped at an Abbey that had bathroom facilities. The wineries were only 20 minutes apart and bathrooms were available at those, also...so not a problem! I can't recommend this tour highly enough! Danielle was absolutely the best guide ever!

We just recently took this trip and everyone in my party thought it was excellent! David was wonderful and the wineries were great. We learned a lot about the wines on this tour and had an incredible lunch. The countryside is beautiful and can't wait to go back. I would highly recommend this trip. It gives you the opportunity to learn about wines, oils and see the countryside!

This was easily one of the best tours of my entire two-week trip in Italy. A lovely drive though the tuscan countryside to visit three top-notch vineyards and to taste Brunello di Montalcino wine. What could be better, except perhaps a home-cooked meal at one of the stops - a feature that was ALSO provided for. Couldn't ask for a better wine-tasting trip. It even included a few brief stops to see a couple of non-wine related sights and to let us stretch our legs.

Milo was our guide for the day. He took us to 3 wineries for tastings and tours. Lunch at the 2nd winery was in a typical winery farm house. . The food was freshly prepared and very tasty. Along the way he was very engaging and provided us with information on the area. There were only 8 in our group which was very nice. Milo was a fantastic guide!!

I highly recommend this tour! My husband and I were staying a couple of days in Siena during our 2 week honeymoon in Italy. Daniele was our guide, and he was absolutely fantastic. He was extremely knowledgeable, and had a personal relationship with each of the wineries we visited. He gave us so much information about the way the grapes are farmed, that I would have never otherwise known. The wine was delicious, and so was the authentic lunch served. Cannot recommend this enough, definitely so much value for the money. Thanks Daniele!

Fun, fun, fun!!! Great tour, highly recommend. This was one tour where I felt we were given an insiders view to the three wineries we visited. Not your standard wine tasting tour. The guide really knew his stuff and added to the enjoyment of the tour with background stories surrounding what we were seeing and eventually tasting. The tour description is bang on!

My wife and I did this trip while staying in Siena. It was really brilliant and we got a great insight into wine and its production. Daniela our guide was informative, engaging and fully involved. The lunch in one of the vineyards was simple Tuscan cooking and delicious. It's a trip really well worth doing.

Great trip with good wine and knowledgable guides. Only tweak would be that we ended up with 10 people in the tour - it wasn't an issue as we took 2 vans but a bit larger than expected.

Daniele was incredible. Believe in me, this will be the best tour you have ever taken in your entire life. The passion that Daniele feels for wine, and the wine making process, is hard not to feel. We would come back and do this tour every year if we can, and we will try. Thanks Daniele!!!

This was truly a special experience. From the start, our guide and driver Elena - like Helena without the H was amazing. So very very knowledgeable about wine, tuscan history, wine making, art, etc - she was GREAT! We started at 1 very small winery and were blown away with the knowledge of that winery, the age and the wine. So great! Then we did a stop at an Abbey for a quick look. Very impressive. Then we did a stop in Montalcino town - super cute! And a stop at another winery that was great, where we were served an amazing lunch to pair with the wine tasting. The wine was delicious!!! The group was a great mix of awesome people from all over the world!! Loved this tour!!!

Great guide and itinerary. Danielle was phenomenal, so passionate and considerate of the party's preferences, interests, and time. _br/_ The only disappointment and hence minus star was the lunch, which was a bit light, not the rustic meal we were anticipating. It consisted of a plate of 3 bruschetta olive oil, tomato paste/spread, olive tapenade, a ratatouille-like veggie dish akin to spanish pisto, and a scoop of sausage and leek risotto which was a bit undercooked not just al dente. Dessert was some nice yogurt w strawberry gelatin. While the veggies were locally sourced from the grounds, everything was cooked down, so it was difficult to really appreciate the freshness. Maybe it was an off day? it was a Sunday, or as foodies we expected too much. That said, the wine was spectacular my fave out of the 3 wineries, the ambience was lovely, and everyone at each winery were wonderful. _br/_ We also lucked out w only 3 ppl in our party, so it really felt like a private tour. All in all, it was a wonderful day, and I highly recommend!!

Wonderful tour of 3 wineries, selected by our guide as very different in their approach but all high quality wineries. Our guide grew up in Tuscany and had deep expertise and experience in the wine industry. I cannot imagine a better experience. We have toured through wineries from Napa California through Oregon Pinot Noir country and Washington for many years. This tour is excellent and includes a great lunch as well! If you purchase wine, the wineries will ship it for you...or take some with you. Enjoy!

Our guide Elena was funny and incredibly knowledgeable. We got to see a good variety of wineries, from tiny home vineyards to state-of-the-art ones. Dont expect super old wines - we only got 2012 (the most recent brunello). Highly recommend to anyone with an interest in Tuscan reds.

We had a great day out with Danielle and our fellow travellers. He is extremely knowledgeable, took us to 3 smaller vineyards where he clearly knew the producers well, meaning we were very well looked after. The lunch provided was the most delicious homemade lunch with local produce. Excellent trip!

Review by:   Ana Maria B,    February 2017 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Tour was well conducted and driver/guide very good. The wine, however, left much to be desired. At the first stop we tasted four wines, only one of which was a brunello. None of these wines, including the brunello, were even moderately attractive. The other two stops were better, but this is not saying much. This tour was by no means an introduction to quality brunello. I will note, the scenery was special, but after all this is Tuscany.

There were 8 of us on this tour and we all thought it was fabulous. Though we didn't know the wineries we would tour, it didn't matter. One member of our group, said it the best, Our wine guide was certainly one of the most knowledgeable I've run into, but what was most enjoyable was his obvious passion for the subject of Italian wines. He exhibited this passion with just the right amount of interesting detail, no small trick when it comes to talking about wine! His choice of the three vineyards he took us to was impeccable, highlighting some of the more obscure examples of the art and science of wine making. The fact that the third vineyard was serendipitously the wine maker whose wine I had served at my daughter's recent wedding could not have been a better ending to a truly memorable tour.

I am late in posting my review, but this is one of the best days I had in Tuscany! All of the wineries were outstanding, and the lunch served was mouth watering. I like one of the wineries so much, I ordered wine to be delivered to my house for Christmas! I would recommend this tour to any traveler.

Amazing day spent learning about the different wines of Montalcino, including several tastings of the world famous Brunello. Even on a rainy day, there was nothing to complain about. The guide was terrific and entertaining and the wineries were small family owned and welcoming.

It was fun to visit the wineries around Siena! The time in Montalcino is very short, maybe 30 minutes, so if you want to explore that town this trip might not be the one for you. All three wine tastings were good, the first two winery tours brought you to the vineyards and explained their processes, while the third wine tour was very short. The small group environment was a lot of fun and our tour guide was great. Overall would certainly recommend!
