Skagway Shore Excursion: Liarsville Gold Rush Camp, Gold Panning and Salmon Bake Combo

Skagway, United States of America

While in port in Skagway, discover what Alaska’s exciting Gold Rush era was all about on this unique two-hour tour. In the historic village of Liarsville, you will dine on authentic Alaskan fare (including wild Alaskan salmon), visit authentic gold-mining exhibits and learn how to pan for gold – keep everything you find! Full of charm, Liarsville Camp gives you the chance to go back in time to an interesting period of Alaskan history.

At the foot of Alaska’s majestic White Pass, nestled next to a waterfall, you’ll discover Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp, so named for the journalists who wrote tall tales from this location when they were sent to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. On this Skagway shore excursion, find out what the Gold Rush was like as you explore Liarsville.

Your Gold Rush adventure starts with an all-you-can-eat alfresco feast in the forest, including wild, Alaskan-caught salmon grilled over an alder-wood fire. After you eat, walk on over to the Gold Rush-era trail camp. Here, admire the pretty waterfall and the authentic exhibits of Liarsville's past. Then head to the Hippodrome, where a cast of 'sourdoughs' and 'dance hall girls' will entertain you with a hilarious melodrama and a poem by the “Bard of the North,” Robert Service.

Next, learn the art of gold panning before you are set free in the Liarsville gold fields to pan on your own. You are guaranteed to find that precious metal that drove men and women crazy with gold fever!

When you've made your fortune, enjoy some free time to stroll through the camp and visit the Fancy Goods souvenir store, the historic bordello and the laundry tents to view the antiques and vintage clothing left behind by the miners and the ladies of the night. This is the perfect time to have your picture taken with one of the dance hall girls or the camp's popular mascot, an Alaskan malamute (a type of dog) named Denali. Complimentary cookies and apple cider are available.

Worry-free Shore Excursion:
We will ensure your timely return to the Skagway port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. This was a terrible excursion!!! If I could give them no stars I would!!! Don't waste your time or money!! If we weren't bused in we would have left!! The bus picked us up at the cruise terminal and drove us to the location which was supposed to be a brothel. We were greeted by a woman pretending to be a prostitute at least I think she was pretending. She directed us to the picnic area for the salmon bake. The food was terrible and the salmon was DRY! After lunch they took us to this outdoor stage where the other actors all dressed as prostitutes performed a short musical. Every visitor was clearly uncomfortable. After the show they led us to the area to pan for gold Each of us were given a pan of sand and shown how to find the gold. Needless to say, noone left with more than a fleck of gold. Don't waste your money!!!!

The grandchildren all loved this tour, especially panning for gold. They thought they were all going to get rich, and then quickly realized how hard it was to search for the little flakes of gold in the water. The staff was very patient and nice, especially since one grand child is very ADD and asks a million questions. Every question was answered with good humor and the staff never acted annoyed at the rambunctious antics of the children. The food was so so, but we weren't really there for the food, just the experience.

Food was excellent! They used a saloon style show to tell you about the history and gave her a lesson on how to pan for gold before trying your own luck. There was time to look around at the tents and equipment used as well as shop in the Goods store.

A brilliant trip and would definitely recommend it - a light hearted view of days gone by and just the right sort of tour amidst a heavy touring holiday schedule._br/_ We were picked up near where our ship docked promptly and driven out to Liarsville - we were the only passengers. There we were met by Miss Molly - a 'lady of the night'. She gave us a personal tour of the camp as other guests had not arrived yet. _br/_ We saw the tents laid out as they would have been during the mining days, saw the different types of activities the miners experienced, together with tools of the trade. We visited the gift shop which was well stocked, When the other gursts arrived by bus we went straight over to the BBQ meal. This was amazing - so much food - chicken, salmon, salads and veg. blueberry cake for dessert to follow. During the meal a man played the guitar and sang folk songs. Soft drinks were available but alcoholic ones could be purchased from the saloon at a reasonable price._br/_ Following this we were entertained by the 3 'ladies of the night' together with a man on a guitar - this was quaint and funny. We were also showed how to pan for gold._br/_ Then it was our turn - it was more difficult than I thought but did eventually find a very small amount planted prior to our visit!! which we were allowed to keep. We were told it had the value of a Mars Bar.!!!_br/_ The rest of our time was spent looking around further and chatting to Miss Molly, who told us that a grizzly bear had walked into their camp 2 weeks prior. It was eating the dandelions there and then wandered around drunk!!_br/_ All in all a very enjoyable experience - definitely recommend it for all ages if you want to have some fun. Good value for money.

It was a great experience overall. The food was delicious. The performance was entertaining. Panning for gold was a little difficult at first but the employees were eager to lend a hand. The camp setting was picturesque. The only disappointment was that there was no malamute. I know the description says women OR the dog...so it wasn't a guarantee. The driver was kind, funny, and helpful with my mom's power scooter.

tour was ok...nothing to write home about.Food average ,shows were good ,gold panning ,not what we expected

Review by:   Jackie A,    August 2014 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Overall experience was okay. After the buffet there was a lot of down time before the actual show which of course meant time to look through the gift shop but nothing else. Panning for gold was too short. Would have been nice to let the kids have a couple of "pans" rather than just one turn.

The tour was very good. There was some confusion abour the pick-up point as two locations were specified. We had tried to confirm the booking on the phone number given but each time (at least 3 times) were put through to what sounded like a recorded message of a child talking non-stop. We were eventually picked up and taken to join the group._br/_ The food at the salmon bake was very good; the gold rush camp was really interesting and good fun; the gold panning was also good fun. Would recommend this tour

We were travelling as a family. Myself, my husband, young daughter, and both my parents. We all went on this excursion and all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our favourite parts were, in no order: Panning for gold and getting little "bits" to take home, the salmon bake was phemonenal. The ?Huskies or ?Malmuts wandering around the camp really thrilled our 5 yr old, who absolutely adores animals! The "ladies of the camp" were extremely funny and a funny part of the tour. Our favourite person for all 5 of us was "Buttermilk". He was our bus driver, but he was incredibly funny, personable and kept everyone aboard his bus really enthralled in his history and stories. He's a true asset to this excursion. We all said after leaving his bus upon return that we could have driven around all day with him just listening to his stories about Skagway. Thank you again and definitely, THANKS BUTTERMILK!!!!!!

Setup was very much like it was in the Gold Rush days and food was very good. But I think that it was a bit too expensive for what was offered. The guide was very knowledgeable and had lived in the area all his life.

The Gold Rush Camp itself was excellent - great food (great sauce on the salmon!), great atmosphere (despite it being a rainy day), great cast of actor/interacters. My regret for the day was that we were the first group to arrive, so we spent a lot of extra time waiting for later bus arrivals to finish eating before moving on to the show and gold panning. Thus, our time to try gold panning was greatly abbreviated as our bus had to head back to town first. So, more of a scheduling issue than anything.

We enjoyed the trip and narration of points of interest by the driver. We were fed a delicious meal soon after arrival. We then toured the grounds at our leisure and were informed of different things in life of those old time gold miners. We enjoyed a short performance and then made our fortune gold panning by finding about 3 thin flecks. The history of Liarsville was explained along the way. Great scenery.

Everything was wonderful - good transportation and commentary, good food, fun show and plan to retire on all the gold we panned!!

As a whole, the excursion was good. We were picked up on time and the driver was funny, informative, and friendly. The best part was the play; it was very entertaining and the actors were fantastic! The cons were the food and gold panning. The food was only average and the gold panning was a bit of a disappointment. We thought we would really pan for gold, instead it was a makeshift area that was planted with gold flakes. If we had known that gold was never mined in Skagway, we may have chosen a different excursion. Overall, it was good value for the money.

It was a very cool experience. The Salmon Bake was fantastic. The entertainment was good. The gold panning was not what I expected at all. If you are really wanting to know more about gold panning, don't go to Liarsville. All in all was a good experience, would go again.
