Viking History Half-Day Tour from Stockholm
Stockholm, Sweden
Get a taste of Sweden’s fascinating Viking and medieval past on this half-day tour from Stockholm! As an expert guide unravels the country’s Viking history, absorb the views as you travel north from the capital through scenic countryside. Visit Täby to see the stones of a Viking assembly; view the runic stone at Granby which is Sweden’s longest inscription in runic stone; and admire the frescoes and inscribed stones at the church of Orkesta. Then, enjoy time free to stroll around the Viking stones and handicraft shops of medieval Sigtuna, Sweden’s oldest town. Perfect for history aficionados!
Start your tour with a pickup from your centrally located Stockholm hotel. Settle into your comfortable minivan for your journey north into Sweden’s beautiful interior as your driver-guide lifts the lid on the country’s Viking and medieval history.
Your first stop is at Täby to see the Jarlabankes bro, an ancient Viking causeway. View the runic stones here and continue to Arkils Tingstad, the site of an age-old Viking assembly. Walk around the circles of ancient stones here — they were once used as seats by parliament members when they discussed disputes and laid down new laws for the area.
Next, travel through the picturesque Vallentuna region to Granby, an important Viking settlement in around 400 to 500 AD. See the decoratively carved Granbyhällen, Sweden’s longest inscription in runic stone, and then enjoy a break of roughly an hour for lunch (own expense) at a nearby café.
Travel to the medieval church at Orkesta (Orkesta Kyrka) to see its beautiful runic stones and 12th-century wall paintings, and then on through the picturesque Lunda region to Sweden’s oldest town, Sigtuna. Established in the 10th century, this charming place boasts narrow lanes, fine churches and many relics and runic stones from the Viking age. Enjoy time at your leisure to stroll around its historical sites and perhaps pick up some souvenirs at its many interesting craft shops and boutiques.
Later, return to your minivan for your drive back to Stockholm. Your tour comes to an end with a hotel drop-off in the mid-afternoon.
Our guide was very nice and knowledgeable. We stopped at various spots to see old runes. We also made a stop at a wonderful farm, where we were given delicious homemade rhubarb pie and coffee. The trip concludes in Sig Tuna, before heading back to Stockholm. It's a great 1/2 day trip out of Stockholm to learn some history, see old runes, and hear about the Vikings.

Really awesome tour...very informative. Would do again!

Disappointing. Although the driver and guide were nice people. The guide's explanations of the history were confusing and his English could be better. We were crammed into a hot mini bus. Best part of the day was a lovely Swedish lunch in an old house and the drive through the snow covered villages at the end of the tour. The tour promoted Sigtuna - a walk in the town etc, but that didn't even happen!_br/_ Pity - I was looking forward to visiting Sigtuna the most.

Truly wonderful. I had a splendid time taking this half-day tour while in Stockholm. It was limited to a tiny group of people and our guide, who was friendly, pleasant, and incredible knowledgeable, led us to many of the most fascinating and beautiful Viking sights. I probably would not have had a chance to visit these ruins and sights in person otherwise. Highly recommended.

This was a great tour to get around the different sites to learn about Viking history. Despite the weather being rainy and cold, it was a great trip and would highly recommend!

Amazing tour! Just beware many of the stops are muddy during the rainy season!

Could be better if the guide knew more history and explain everything that happened around. We felt like hiring a chofer. Too bad because there are a lot of things to tell about the area. Sigtuna is a beautiful little town to visit longer, we know it was cold but he only took us to the beautiful church, we only saw the old rock church but he did not give us more info, the smallest city hall in Sweden and the tourist info center. The guide did not cover our expectations eventhough the area is nice, thanks God we had a written guide to know more about all around.

This tour was amazing!

This tour in my opinion was worth taking, just don't expect too much as there was really nothing spectacular about the places we've visited except the history itself. The tour guide I forgot his name was devoted to the retelling of the history/facts but we were not given enough time on our own to take photos and enjoy each sight. I actually had to sneak away silently while he was talking just so I could take photos before we'd leave every place! :o

So cool, Too bad he had so few things about the Vikings there, he wanted to see a lot more, very much. The guide is a very nice gentleman and the organization was pretty cool too, the transportation excellent.

We couldn't follow what our guide was explaining and he talked too much

This was a wonderful experience! We loved our guide, we think his name was Unger and his knowledge of the Viking history with regards to the churches, people and the rune stones. He could actually read some of the letters on them! It was great to be able to choose from several places for lunch in Sigtuna and what great views and terrific food! Excellent tour. He picked us up at our hotel and then dropped us off at a museum we talked about visiting later that day. That does not happen in many other tours.

The tour was slow, and is more towards a full-day than a half-day. The guide was at times hard to understand

Excellent. Filled in gaps in our tour of Denmark, the Baltic States, Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway up to North Cape on a Hurtigruten cruise.

Our driver collected us from our hotel and gave us an in depth account of Stockholm and #39;s history and Viking connections. Urban, our guide, was incredibly knowledgable and personable. Highly recommend although be warned there is a lot of walking and in cold weather be sure to bring very warm clothes.

This was a worthwhile way of spending an afternoon if you have already seen Stockholm. Urban, our guide, really made the experience great. We got much more than expected.

This tour was outstanding! Our guide, Urban, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We really enjoyed the fika in Granby and hiking through a field to discover rune stones. Sigtuna was a beautiful as well. If you get a chance to take this your while in Stockholm, do it.

A few weeks before this tour I received an e-mail that the tour was upgraded to a full day tour including Uppsala. The tour was great, there were only 4 of us so it felt like a private tour. Urban, the tourguide, has a lot of knowledge and shares his knowledge with enthusiasm and humour. It would highle recommend this tour!
Review by: Felicity D, June 2016
Our tour guide Urban really made this experience worthwhile! I could imagine with other guides who aren't as engaging that it could be a far less exciting day. Urban had a way of linking all the Viking history with other cultures, religions, histories to really make the information easily understandable. He was also pretty funny which is always a plus! Highly recommend

A fascinating experience. Glenn was an informative and interesting guide, leading us through Viking and Medieval sites and churches. Sigtuna was an ideal stop for lunch as it was both historical and a pleasure to walk around. Highly recommended, and based on this tour I would not hesitate to upgrade to the full day tour if available it wasn't on the day I travelled.

Very interesting tour. There were just 5 of us and it was really nice having a small group. The tour was outside of Stockholm so it was so nice to see the Swedish suburbs, which were beautiful. Our guide was very knowledgeable. He was so into the tour that he even stopped by the side of the woods, which was not part of the tour, to show us what ligonberries looked like. They were very close to the ground and there were also wild blueberries growing there. We got a taste of both. I just wish he gave us some time to have photos taken by the ruric stones, but other than that, he was an excellent guide.

This was an excellent choice. Urban was an excellent guide and taught us a great deal.

People with interest in history may do it. For party lovers it may be a time-pass till the night comes ....
Review by: Clyde P, September 2015
I enjoyed the tour a great deal. The guide was very knowledgeable and was willing to answer any and all questions. The weather was a little damp, but did not stop any of the activities. My goal was to learn more about world history in general with the Vikings being an important part of many things that happened in Europe. While I think a longer tour would have been better, given the time I had available, this tour met my goals. I would recommend this tour to anyone that asked.

Being picked up from the hotel is really convenient! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny. I'd go again in future...
Review by: Sharon G, August 2015
The tour was excellent and tour guide great. The only issue was that when we bought the tour it was to be 8 hours and go to Upsalla. The tour guide thought it ended in Sigtuna. The other members of the group also believed it went to Upsalla, so the tour guide took us and was very thorough and gracious. But not sure why there was this confusion. All in all it was a very excellent tour and I highly recommend it.

Great trip wit lots of information. However, you are seeing rocks.... so if you are looking for artifacts, this is not the trip for you go to Oslo viking ship exhibit. This trip does give you history, an idea about the vikings, great coffee stop and lunch in a small village

Small group. Excellent guide. A lot of very interesting information. They even serve us coffee and homemade pastries, it was a rainy day so it was very kind of them to do that. Great tour!

If you want to know about Vikings and the history of this area this is the tour to take. Our guide was full of interesting details and catered the tour to the interests of the group. It opened our eyes to the many artifacts that we bypass every day. The trip through the countryside was also beautiful.

Our tour guide, Urban, was exceptional. He was very knowledgeable and personable. We were supposed to take the half day tour, but ended up switching to the full day tour. I would definitely recommend it. I was a little disappointed that Sigtuna didn't have tourist shops. I had gotten the impression that there would be handicrafts but there were only a few in the tourist info building.

Great experience. Brilliant guide with a great general knowledge and engaging personality. I have done Viator tours before and generally have a very good experience, but this one was unique, largely because of the efforts of our guide who imbued very activity with energy and passion. I would recommend the experience highly.
Review by: Daniel H, October 2014
Simply amazing! Our tour guide Eric took us through the history of early Viking life and how they used the rune stones to document events. As we drove around the countryside those stones appeared everywhere, on the sides of the road and even incorporated into the walls of buildings and walls! This then lead to a history lesson of the early church followed by the effects of the reformation. Throw a few kings in the mix, a plague, some wars and you start to get a basic timeline of events in Sweden. It was well worth the time and I would highly recommend it even if you are not a history buff because you can't beat the beauty of the Swedish countryside!
Review by: Stormmoth, September 2014
This was not worth what i paid for it. Basically you're brought to see a few runestones, a square of stones that we were told was once a local parliment by a river, the foundations of an old longhouse on a farm, where they also give you a piece of cake and some coffee and the ruin of a church. We were left to "explore" Sigtuna for an hour and a half, though that only took me 15 minutes walking very very slowly. For the rest of the time, I sat there twiddling my thumbs. I went on the tour on the assumption that I would be able to see something a bit more significent than I actually did. I didn't really enjoy this, and got irate that I had wasted my money and my time. I would not recommend this trip, a first for me on viator
