La Gomera Day Trip from Tenerife

Tenerife, Spain

Visit the island of La Gomera on a day trip from southern Tenerife, and experience its sights, culture and food with a local guide! A haven of peace with dramatic terrain, the island is often considered as the gem of the Canarian archipelago. Discover landmarks such as Columbus House in the capital of San Sebastian, ogle the views from Mirador de Las Carboneras, enjoy a 2-course lunch in a quaint village, and then watch a ‘silbo gomero’ (local whistling language) demonstration.

Start your day with a pickup from your southern Tenerife hotel, and then travel to the island’s west coast to board your ferry to La Gomera, the island known as the jewel of the Canary Islands. Relax out on deck during the 45- to 60-minute crossing before hopping onto dry land at San Sebastian, La Gomera’s capital.

On a walking tour, see a collection of the city’s historical sights. Admire the façade of the Church of the Assumption (Iglesia del Asunción), stop for photos by the Hermitage of San Sebastian and see Columbus House — built on the spot where Sir Christopher Columbus is thought to have stayed on the island.

Continue by minibus to one of the island’s best-loved vantage points at Mirador de Las Carboneras, and gaze out at sights of the Hermigua valley and town, framed by a seamless blue void of sea and sky. After soaking up the panoramic sights, travel onward through Garajonay National Park, and stop along the way for a stroll to stretch your legs.

Lunch beckons in the town of El Cedro, so stop at a traditional Gomeran restaurant for your 2-course meal. The menu often changes, but typically your lunch starts with a dish of fresh bread with Canarian herb sauces — known as mojos — followed by a main course of salty local potatoes with either chicken or beef goulash, both prepared with local herbs and spices. Savor the food and enjoy up to half a bottle of local wine, too.

Head to the nearby village of Las Rosas next and explore its pretty streets with your guide. Stop to watch a demonstration of the famous Gomeran whistling language, known locally as silbo gomero, and learn how the ‘language’ was used to communicate across the island’s deep valleys and ravines.

From Las Rosas, make your way back to the port at San Sebastian, cross the sea by ferry, and finally finish with a drop-off at your southern Tenerife hotel.

Please note: Occasionally, lunch may be eaten in Las Rosas and the stop in El Cedro will consist of free time to explore.

It starts really early in the morning, and the tour was pretty much just Germans, I was the only American haha, but it was fantastic, got to practice my German a lot, and the lunch was amazing. I really enjoyed seeing the Silbo Gomero and seeing the remains of ancient Canarian Amazigh culture, the wine was simply delicious! I would so go on this tour again!

We were picked up outside our hotel at 0715. A pleasant young lady dealt with the administration. After about an hour of pick ups she got off the coach without a word to be replaced by a rather scruffy man who simply said hello and sat down.

Oliver was our excellent tour guide and our visit to La Gomera was well worth the very early start.

This was a fantastic tour!! We were a group of four and we all agree that our guide Ildefonso made the whole day so interesting. His knowledge was endless and his delivery of the information was so professional...no notes whatsoever.Very impressive!!_br/_ The demonstration of the Silbo language at the lunch stop was incredible and so pleased to hear that this language is being to taught to schoolchildren so that it will not disappear...what a unique and wonderful heritage._br/_ A seamless tour and well worth the early start from the hotel in Tenerife.

Awesome trip. Stunning scenery. Saw dolphins and turtles on the ferry over, added bonus! Whistling demo was fantastic. Would recommend to anyone!

This was a full day tour. My only disappointment was that there were not enough opportunities to take pictures of the breaktaking views.

wonderful day, although an early start. Be aware it is a lot cooler on the island. Very interesting day.

Everything was the way it should be. The guide was amazing and skilled at languages, there were many stops to take pictures at viewpoints. We were provided with interesting info about the area. The included meal was delicious too. Highly recommended.

Definitely a worthwhile trip. It visits key locations and gives you a good taste of what the island has to offer. The guide Oliver was both informative and entertaining though we had to repeatedly listen to 4 translations of all the information and some people - Germans I think - talked too loudly when it was not in their language. Organisation of transport hotel pick up ferry island tour was excellent and trouble-free. The lunch was simple, but not bad in terms of value for money, and included wine. We were unlucky not to sit at a table with any English-speakers. The tour was a bit rushed at the end, with very little time to look round San Sebastian, because of the imminent ferry departure

Interesting tour round and round the mountains. Unfortunately the nature reserve was shrouded in cloud with misty rain so weren't able to appreciate the view. The meal in the cafe was disappointing though the demonstration of whistling, fascinating._br/_ When we were picked up at our hotel, the Arona Gran, our guide Bernard informed us that when we returned to the port after our trip we were to walk back to our hotel, over a mile, so we were not impressed!

Tour was overall very good and a fascinating day at La Gomera. The vistas and views of local flora are amazing. The only small challenges was the very early pickup time with lots of stops at the start of the tour, and the multiple languages which made for repetitive narration.

Good tour only down side was the ferry was extremely late making it a very long day. Excellent guide and made sure we got back to hotel very quickly

Good tour of the Island but a lot of time spent on the bus. Guide was very informative however as there were many different nationalities on the tour the guide spent a long time repeating the information in at least 5 languages which was a bit off putting. Lunch was far better than previous reviews. More time in San Sebastion the capital would have been appreciated.

I enjoyed the actual trip to the island although I found the guide a bit authoritarian. The purpose of the day, for me, was mainly photography and it is a bit demeaning to be treated like children and continually being told to pay attention when trying to take photographs._br/_ I would also question whether it is necessary for a guide to talk continuously for what seemed like every minute of the trip. _br/_ However, he was probably only trying to be helpful - he just needs to tone it down a bit and remember that we are paying customers.

Excellent tour for the money paid, picked up and delivered back to our hotel front door. Great day out seeing most of La Gomera. Lucy was served too. Lots of information given by our guide throughout. Great ferry journey from Los Christianos. Well worth considering. Last the whole day.

View of island was nice. Trip was rushed and mainly had Russians on bus so tour guide spoke more Russian than English. Not to much to view on the island.

Lovely day trip to La Gomera. Beautiful scenery and well organised. The only criticism was the time spent in picking up and dropping off customers before boarding the boat.

Enjoyed this trip to La Gomera immensely although did not manage to see any of the lizards that inhabit the island. The coach drivers are amazing, taking a car round the roads was an experience in itself. The whistling demonstration was great.

it's a good way to see the island but not the highlight of our trip.

This was a very inexpensive way of touring another island, which one would not normally get to see. It is the 2nd smallest of the 7 Canary Islands, and is an ancient volcano as are the others. We toured all the way round, stopping for lunch, which was OK, although not particularly inspiring. The whistling demonstration was interesting, and especially that young people are being taught the art, to prevent it dying out. We finished with an hour in the capital it was siesta, so not a lot to do, but all in all, a worthwhile day. Oliver was our guide again, and he is brilliant.

Interesting island, coach trip a bit long and lunch very basic. Town had plenty to explore, rainforest was brilliant but not enough time there. Roads hairy but coach driver was brilliant.

I agree with Vilma G.--the trip was amazing! It was 5 of us traveling and we had the best time because of the great guide--Joaquiam. Weather in November was great and mountains looked breathtaking. If you visit the Canaries, you definitely must take this tour.

It is a long day and requires a lot of energy with only minimal return, but still worth doing if you have the time.

If you want to see La Gomera, this trip is well worth it. Very well organised and a good day out. The only downside was the lunch - herded like cattle into the cafe and the food was dire.

A stunning island! Defently a must see if you come to Canarian islands. Amazing views of green valleys, fruit trees and lovely cosy villages. Very interesting and leaving a very good impression trip. Local wine and food was delicious. Also very interesting to see how the locals speak their language - whisle. Great trip, a very professional guide and unforgetable memories!

This was a well organised trip with a very well informed and genial guide, Joaquiam. I was lucky the weather was fine and sunny and was able to fully appreciate the island. It was astonishing value too! Pick up, sail to La Gomera, island tour and lunch. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Tenerife.

Interesting to hear why La Gomera is a World Heritage site from an experienced guide, good food at the meal stop and the whistling demonstration was impressive.

We really enjoyed this tour. I am not a big fan of bus tours, but this was really good. Our guide was great, really knowledgeable and very friendly. It was a nice day trip and we got to see a beautiful island we would not have seen otherwise

The trip to La Gomera was okay. It was a good way to see one of the neighboring islands and learn about the culture. The whistling show was interesting. The tour guide was very nice and the scenery was stunning. My biggest complaint was the lack of direction from the local service provider. They gave us the wrong meeting point to catch the bus and we ended up missing our tour and having to rearrange our itinerary to fit it back in. It was disappointing, esp when viator states that bus pick up from the hotel was included, but you actually have to walk to a local bank to meet the tour bus._br/_ I do recommend this trip, but I would wait until you get to the island and book it from a different local travel provider. They have local providers all over the streets of southern Tenerife.
