Tenerife Shore Excursion: Private Teide National Park Day Trip

Tenerife, Spain

Leave the beaches behind and enjoy a full-day shore excursion exploring beautiful Teide National Park with a private guide! Admire some of the inland’s most stunning scenery on a journey through the lava-filled landscapes of La Esperanza to the slopes of Mount Teide — one of Spain’s tallest volcanoes. Visit the summit by cable car, if you wish, and then walk around the area known as Las Cañadas, where enchanting rock formations have provided movie settings for ‘Clash of the Titans’ and more.

Leave the Tenerife port by private air-conditioned minibus, and travel to Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that surrounds Mt Teide, a volcano located at the heart of the island. One of Spain’s tallest volcanoes at 12,198 feet (3,718 meters), Mt Teide makes for an impressive visit, and its views over the island are incredible.

Gaze out of the window as you listen to your guide's commentary during the drive through La Esperanza, an area made up of volcanic lava. After traveling to a height of around 7,776 feet (2,370 meters), stop for photos and soak up the views. If you want to continue to the summit, take a ride on the cable car (own expense) and ascend on your own to discover panoramas that stretch over the whole island.

Leaving the volcano in the early afternoon, make the journey to an alpine-esque area of the park known as Las Cañadas. Walk around the trails with your private guide and marvel at the landscape, with its rivers of petrified lava and eroded rock formations, broken up by colorful wild flowers. Hear how the area is used as a filming set for TV commercials and movies such as the 2010 Clash of the Titans, and learn how the area has become one of Tenerife’s top visitor attractions.

Later, return to your minibus and travel back to the Tenerife port where your shore excursion finishes with drop-off by your guide.

Our driver, Angel, a Tenerife local, made our trip a memorable one, I am handicapped and wheelchair bound, and I was unable to access the first vehicle provided. The van would have been perfect for anyone able to step up a foot or so, but I cannot. Another vehicle was obtained, and our tour began. I had no idea of th size and beauty of this island prior to the arrival of our cruise ship. The city is large and modern, with very colorful buildings dotting a vast hillside. A short drive took us out of the city of Santa Cruz and immediately to higher elevations. We reached a forested highway with many viewpoints where we were able to view the city from above. Continuing on, we rose higher and the temperature dropped significantly-I would recommend a jacket. The trip continued through the National Park, where we stopped for many views of Tiedre, the towering volcano rising some 12000 feet above sea level, There is a cable car ride available that takes you near the top of Tiedre, but we did not do this. As it was we drove to over 7000 feet and viewed an extensive volcanic landscape. All the while, Angel provided interesting info on the cities, the forests, and the volcanoes of the Island. We took a different route back to the ship, and viewed more of the cities before ending our tour. Highly recommended and enjoyed by all of our party, this trip is well worth the time and money.

Had a pleasant day touring on foot the city and then getting into a van and going up to the national Park. It is quite lovely and many different changes on the way up as far as the trees. We also had stopped before going up to the park to a lovely Village and got to walk around there as well and see some of the architecture. Would recommend this tour Highly.

Excellent experience! Our guide spoke very good English (originally from England). She listened to our desires of seeing local things. Stopped for a traditional coffee at a local petrol station, saw the volcano, and had a wonderful traditional Lunch.

The Canary Islands are surprisingly different, and Tenerife has an astounding area of climatological zones - forests, deserts, volcanic landscapes, soaring evergreens, verdant coastline. It's an environmental treasure. Unfortunately, our guide, while friendly, had rudimentary English skills which deteriorated as the day progressed. We have a complaint into Viator and the tour operator about this, which has not been resolved at the time of this review.

The scenery was beautiful, but our guide was just OK. She did not pass on as much knowledge as other guides we've had. Still worth doing to see the scenery.

This place is beautiful and I was mesmerized the whole day. My tour guide, Angel, was waiting for us when we disembarked the ship and our day could not have gone any better than it did. Angel was so kind and informative. I am disabled and was traveling with my 82 year old mother and he took really good care of us. I was on a three week vacation and this by far was my favorite part of the entire trip. Thanks Angel!!!

We were met right outside the ship in the pouring rain by our driver and guide. We then had to take a shuttle from the ship to the city center where the driver fetched the mini-van. The driver informed us that the north roads into Teide National Park were closed due to snow and ice, so we drove down the east coast of the island to the south road, but unfortunately that road was also closed. So there would be no visiting Mt Teide or Las Canadas for us. The driver then decided instead to take us to Masca, a picturesque village on the west side of Tenerife, but that road was also closed. So he took us to the cliffs at Los Gigantes. They were very lovely, but I didnt get out of the min-van due to the pouring down rain. At that point, I asked if we could just keep going around to the north shore of Tenerife so we could just do a complete circle tour of the island. We ended up making a stop at Puerto De La Cruz, and since it wasnt raining in that town, we got out of the mini-van and walked around. The guide showed us a black sand beach, an old castle, typical canary island houses etc before continuing on back to Santa Cruz, where it was of course still raining. We made a quick stop by the cathedral in Santa Cruz, which unfortunately is closed in the afternoons. Our guide would have continued to show us more of Santa Cruz, but by that time it was nearing 3:00 and we needed to be back on the ship by 3:30. After waiting in line for the shuttle, we made it back to our ship right before 3:30, so there was a chance we would have been late had my husband not spoken up and said it was time to get back to the ship. I will say it was supposed to be a 6 hour tour and we got 7 hours. The guides have no control over the weather and were really trying to make the most of a very wet day. I am not sure what the cruise ship shore excursion to Mt Teide ended up doing, but despite being disappointed we didnt get to see Mt Teide, we had a very nice circle tour of Tenerife!

Angel and Ivalu were fantastic tour guides. We had a spectacular time touring Tenerife and seeing things like locals. The commentary was good and the information very helpful. We also were treated to a delicious lunch and very much enjoyed the company. Getting back to our cruise ship was a very close call but in the end, we made it safely on board. I would highly recommend this tour but perhaps next time, leave a bit more time to return to the ship.

Our tour guides were Angel and Ann.... sorry not sure how to spell her name. They were on time, informative, friendly and have a passion for the Island. Wonderful private guides! Tenerife is amazing. If you go, the cable car to the summit area is well worth the money and the time.

Best tour on our whole trip. Angel was our guide, super knowledgeable and accommodating, he didn't take us to a single tourist trap. Mt. Teide is spectacular. You encounter desert and snow, and beautiful views. Everyone back at the ship were envious of our pictures. Highly recommend, and ask for Angel to be your guide.

We enjoyed this tour very much even though we did not get to go the Teide National Park as the road to Mount Teide was closed due to heavy snow the night before. Our tour guide was very resourceful however and planned alternative sites for us to see instead, which included our going to a small town to tour the town, with its spectacular views of the valley below, and a family owned restaurant where we ate local food family style!
