Nikko National Park Day Trip from Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

Explore the scenic shrines and breathtaking countryside of Nikko National Park on a relaxing day trip from Tokyo. Famous for its stunning beauty amid natural surroundings, Nikko has been a center of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship for centuries. With an informative guide, visit the ornate complex of Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site decorated with wood carvings and gold leaf. Upgrade for a Japanese lunch, and then take in more sights at Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. Enjoy round-trip coach transport, including hotel pickup.

Board a comfortable coach at Hamamatsucho Bus Terminal after morning pickup from your selected Tokyo hotel. Then enjoy the drive to Nikko, a small city at the entrance to Nikko National Park — a place of stunning scenic beauty.
The highlight here is the world-famous Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO-listed mausoleum of the first Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan until 1868. This gorgeous complex contains more than a dozen colorful structures featuring the superb craftsmanship of Japan's 17th-century artisans, set amid a tranquil forest.
Spend approx. 1.5 hours exploring the Toshogu Shrine your guide, admiring the lavish gold-leaf decorations and ornate details, including five buildings categorized as National Treasures of Japan. Be sure to look out for the famous carving of monkeys depicting the ‘hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil’ proverb.
Take a break for a Japanese lunch (provided, if upgrade selected) and then spend an some time at Lake Chuzenji.
Next, travel to Kegon Waterfall, considered one of the three most beautiful waterfalls in Nikko. You have 30 minutes to capture the perfect picture from the observation deck, located directly in front of the 264-foot (80-meter) cascade, which takes its name from the mist created by the water hitting the rocks below and producing an enchanting fog-like (kirifuri) quality.
Finish your tour at Shinjuku or Ginza stations — Tokyo's most popular shopping and entertainment districts. Browse the stores or relax with dinner and a drink at one of the many restaurants (own expense), before making your own way back to your hotel.

I enjoyed this tour very much. We certainly visited during a heavy crowd due to Golden Week, but the facilities are truly remarkable in spite of the crowds. Don't expect a small group and be prepared for Tokyo traffic coming back. I do wish the tour spent more than 10 minutes at Lake Chuzenji. I know the day was tight and well ordered, but this place was truly magnificent -- the stuff of ukiyo-e paintings, particularly when cherry blossoms are in bloom. I say this but I truly enjoyed my experience.

We don't typically like to take tours, preferring to travel on our own. The Toshogu Shrine is a must see for everyone traveling to Japan. Our guide Amy has to be the best tour guide we've come across in all of our travels. She's very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. On our tour bus, there was a teething toddler, and she cried during the entire 3.5 hours trip to Nikko. Amy was extremely accommodating to that family and to the other passengers. She's a 5-star guide.

What an amazing place. We were very lucky that because of the time of year there were very few tourists about so we were able to explore the site very easily. It is a magical place and we were so pleased that we went. The included lunch was very authentic and just perfect to warm us all back up. Our guide, Nao, was very informative and moved things along at a pace that was just right._br/_ Highly recommend this trip.

This day tour was very well organized from start to finish. Our guide, Shin-san was very informative, entertaining and helpful. All three places visited - the temple/shrine/tomb, the picturesque lake and the waterfall were well worth the trip. The Japenese lunch was of exceptional quality - and more than enough in quantity._br/_ Bernadette and Graeme, Melbourne

Ellie was a totally authentic, gracious, and kind guide. Highly recommend this tour to see the sites in the National Park area of Nikko! The fresh air and massive trees not to mention the equally impressive temples were quite fantastic. Ellie provided us some interesting inside Japanese context and was personable as well as super helpful to get us going along with our directions after we were dropped off @ Shinjuko Station. The alpine lake visit was quite lovely in spite of the 48 switchbacks on the winding road. Kudos to the great driver for skillfully manipulating the mountain and keeping us from getting motion sickness. One warning: the bus ride is a bit long at a little over 2 hours each way so beware that there are no bathrooms on the bus...however, there is a rest stop a little over half way which is nice to get a coffee or freshen up. The waterfalls was also a highlight. Quite a long day but lovely and well worth getting out of the concrete jungle of Tokyo! Again, Ellie made the trip so enjoyable as a great guide.

The Nikko National Park tour was fantastic. It was a great day trip from Tokyo. I did not find the bus trip too long and thought the sites that were seen were amazing. Being close to Tokyo, I had no idea that Japan had that amazing scenery to it. The guide did a great job explaining everything despite the massive crowds everywhere. Well done!

Our guide was great and this tour was perfectly timed. I recommend choosing the option with lunch as there aren't many restaurant options in the park and the bento lunch provided was great. Loved the walk up to the Tokugawa resting place, the waterfall and the lake!

I built an extra day into my Japan trip to see Nikko and this trip did not disappoint. The tour company was very organized. We were picked up at our hotel and dropped off at the shopping area a short walk back. We saw all the major sights and moved at a speed that gave us ample time for picture taking. The tour guide was very good. It was a great day.

We had an excellent guide and a good day in NIKKO. It was not what I had expected so it was very different and special. The crying dragons was very interesting.. The entire demo was in Japanese so we didn't understand what he was saying but we could get the idea.

This was an excellent day trip provided by JTB Sunrise. We had an English speaking guide who did an excellent job. Everything was planned to give you the right amount of time in each place and the lunch was excellent too. The only thing that could have made it even better was if there was the fall foliage but it was a bit too late we went on this tour 11/29/17.

I enjoyed the views on this tour but I realised we travelled to several areas of Nikko and it was not a 'park' in terms of walking around a park area as I thought. Although the tour guide was great, I did feel very rushed at each place, having only 30minutes of free time including queuing for toilets or browsing the shops as well as sightseeing.

Nikko was a spectacular day tour! We had a convenient pick up at a hotel near our home. The bus was comfortable and the guide was knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. The scenery at Nikko was breathtaking. It could be physically demanding for older guests or anyone with disabilities, but still well worth going to. The waterfall was beautiful. At times the trip felt a bit rushed, but on the other hand, we saw a lot of things! The lunch was superb. All in all it was a completely enjoyable day and I have recommended it to several friends.

My husband took his 88 year old mother on the tour at my recommendation. They had a great time. There was a lot of walking which is something to consider for older visitors, but she enjoyed it very much. Nikko is gorgeous!

Nikko is beautiful and definitely needs to be on any visit to Japan. The drive to Mt. Nantai is one of the most scenic I've ever been on. Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls are both stunning as well.

Our guide Yuki san was wonderful. She explained a lot about the story of Nikko, general story of Japan, and was not only informational but very entertaining. She made our trip very exciting. The visit, although short, didn't seem hurried, The lunch was excellent and very large. Although the day was foggy to see the falls, we were able to make it to the lake and take some pictures. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone that likes history and temples.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour, even though it was my second time. The temple site is World Heritage and is beautiful with recent renovations. This tour offers a lot of variety. After an enjoyable lunch we visited Lake Chuzenji and Kegon waterfall. Both were very picturesque with snow but it was absolutely freezing! I highly recommend this tour.

We were picked up from our hotel and taken to a central bus area. Our full day tour to Nikko National Park headed north, travelling by air-conditioned coach with our English-speaking guide, Kumiko, who was absolutely delightful. We soon left the City behind and were in the mountainous area with beautiful scenic countryside and the usual Rice Paddies etc. We visited the Toshugu Shrine - the complex consists of more than a dozen buildings set in a beautiful forest. We were amazed at the lavishly decorated, gold-leaf embellishments and opulent chambers during our visit to the monument and other buildings. This was done in a way not seen elsewhere in Shrines in Japan, where simplicity was the norm in shrine architecture. To our surprise a priest invited our group via one of the Shrine maidens, into the Main Hall to view the Shrine with its elaborate and ornate carvings and gold trimmings. This was unusual as we have never been permitted entry into any of the Main Halls, specially not when there was a formal blessing taking place. _br/_ After our lovely lunch in a local restaurant, we visited Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. We travelled up the side of the mountain on the Irohazaka Road, which is a winding road that has 48 hairpin bends and is 11.5 km long. There are two roads one way up and one way down, both of them giving us wonderful views down to the valleys below. At Lake Chuzenji, we were able to see Mount Nantai which is a very similar shape to Mt Fuji from our lakeside stop, although its peak was partly hidden by cloud. A short drive later and we were at Kegon Falls, which is 97 metres high and could be seen from several vantage points including taking a lift down 100 metres so that we could view the falls from the base. The lift shaft had been bored through the cliff. _br/_ The scenery around Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls was breathtaking._br/_ Our awesome day finished at 7.30pm at Shinjuku where we walked to the local train station and caught a Metro train back to our hotel.

Although the coach trip was a bit long to reach our destination necessary the places we visited were most interesting and nature was at her glorious best. However, visiting the Toshogu Shrine on a Sunday was probably not such a good idea because it was pretty crowded. However, the shrine was historically beautiful and very different to other shrines visited. Gold is an impressive embellishment to places of worship.

Nikko is a long way from Tokyo so taking this tour was a great way to get there in comfort. Tour guide was quite good, spoke good English. Women should note: if you take this tour, take toilet paper as the toilets in Nikko are very old and you have to buy toilet paper. I know this is strange but they have the old Japanese type toilets and few western toilets in at the Park. Nikko is very beautiful. The Shrine is large and beautiful. The waterfall was pretty but we did not spend enough time there from my point of view. Only about 40 minutes. We did have a lovely lunch on this tour which was nice. It was Japanese typical style lunch which included noodles, tempura vegetables some slices of beef and a nice hot boiling pot of soup we used to cook some of our food. The experience was nice. Overall, this tour was a nice change of pace. Nikko was crowded but it was Golden Week so we were prepared for the crowd.
