Tierra del Fuego National Park Half-Day Tour with Optional End of the World Train Ride

Ushuaia, Argentina

Escape from Ushuaia and discover Tierra del Fuego, the world's southernmost national park. Prepare to be mesmerized by breathtaking natural wonders, Patagonian lakes and charming scenery. Explore Tierra del Fuego in a vehicle, or discover it by train -- either option is sure to leave an impression on you!

Only 7 miles (11 km) outside of Ushuaia lies Tierra del Fuego, a stunning national park that is truly located at the end of the world – it’s the southernmost national park on the planet. Departing Ushuaia, you'll immediately begin to see a change in scenery as you drive past picturesque Patagonian lakes, lagoons and rivers, bodies of water that all exit through the famous Beagle Channel. Passing Mt Susana, you'll arrive at the old prison, now the site of the Southern Fuegian Railway (also known as the End of the World Train). Here, the tour is divided into two groups, depending on which options participants select.

End Of the World Train Option:
If you choose the train ride option, you’ll leave the station and travel along the route of the old railway, which once held prisoners who chopped timber from the forest and transported it to the city in order to construct buildings and provide warmth. Along the way, you'll cross bridges and peat bogs. The train makes a brief stop at Macarena Waterfall (Cascada de la Macarena) Station, where you'll learn about the indigenous Yamana People and climb to a viewpoint before continuing on through the Tierra del Fuego National Park. Ride through the park, ending your journey at the location where an old Lombardich Sawmill once processed timber.

Then, continue through the valley towards Ensenada Bay, taking in the majestic beauty of the Redonda and Estorbo Islands as they juxtapose the snow-white Sampaio Mountains. You'll see Roca Lake and walk along the Lapataia River heading towards Condor Hill. Next, you'll visit the Green Lagoon and the Black Lagoon

Vehicle Option:
After visiting the prison, you'll continue through the valley towards Ensenada Bay, taking in the majestic beauty of the Redonda and Estorbo Islands as they juxtapose the snow-white Sampaio Mountains. You'll see Roca Lake and walk along the Lapataia River heading towards Condor Hill. Next, you'll visit the Green Lagoon and the Black Lagoon, as well as large-growing peat bog.

This was a good tour for those with limited time to enjoy the national park. The guide was very knowledgeable and helped us understand some of the history and ecology of the area.

Enjoyable outing, although hotel failed to pass on later pick-up message. Good informative guide on coach. Train bit touristy as expected, but well-organised and good on-board commentary. Later guided walk and tour to lakes added to experience and knowledge of the region.

Fantastic trip. The Train ride was the highlight. Would have been nice if the tour pre-purchased our tickets for us so that we don't have to waste time queuing up for the tickets and not have enough time to look at the station and exhibits which looked very interesting.

great scenery in natl park, guide was knowledgable and very pleasant, but spoke in both spanish and english as it was a large group. did not explain that train ride was optional, so people were not aware of the option

It started off on the wrong foot. I was told that I would be picked up in the morning at my hotel but the night before the hotel received a call that I now needed to make my way into town to be picked up at a central place. This was an added 20 USD price for me as I was staying outside of town and needed to now take a taxi. As for the park tour - I was expecting that by spending a half day in the park you would spend time in the park walking, hiking. There was a total of 35 minutes allotted for walking in the park - the rest was driving around. Last but not least it was an 'English guided tour' unfortunately the majority of details were given in Spanish - the English version was significantly trimmed town to bare bones comments. We were actually asked while at the main lookout point reviewing the map if we needed to hear the English version or if the Spanish version was good enough? _br/_ Overall thoughts are that it was very expensive for what you got. Would recommend that you book in town or hire a taxi to take you there and pick you up. Will cost much less and the experience probably much greater, unless riding buses is your thing.

This was a lovely tour with beautiful scenery and a guided walk through the park as well as some free time to take pictures and get a PENGUIN stamp on our passport at the END OF THE WORLD little post office. I didn't do the optional train ride...so cannot speak to it.

I only had one day to see the national park so this was a good way to get an overview. I did not do the train ride beaus I felt I would see more of the park without that. We did get out and walk a little bit in a few places which was nice. We weren't just driving past scenery in a bus.

Being at the end of the world is breathtaking to begin with. This train trip and route takes one into some remote areas that the buses can't get to. An superb excursion and highly recommended

There really isn't a lot to see in this park. The train ride was okay.

We opted to not take the train. The tour failed to tell us that though you don't take the train you still have to wait for the other tourists to buy their tickets to get on the train and then wait for them when they get off. I thought we would be completely separate. It was 2.5 hours I before we really got a tour.

The tour was very interesting but a little chaotic in the beginning. I noticed some people's reservations were lost and they had to pay extra money to get in. the park itself is beautiful. However, I would add a visit to the post office. It is the post office at the end of the world. You can get your picture taken there and mail post cards from the bottom of South America. This tour should include that.

My wife and I booked this excursion through Viator for a local agent to meet us at the cruise terminal. The booking confirmation told us to meet the local Gray Line agent and the tour began at 8:00 am. No one showed up to pick us up. We looked around for an hour, begining at 7:30 am, and asked other tour companies, local officials, looked for our names on placards and walked around looking for a Gray Lines agent. We ended up just hiring a local excursion for a cruise down Beagel Channel to see the penguins. That was a great excursion. Tip to Viator, please let your customer know who the local agent is and where they will meet the customer.

The trip itself into the National Park was great and the train ride fun. However, when I booked it, I read in the comments that someone had an experience of having booked and paid for the optional train ride, but it was not printed on the voucher and then the tour operator questioned it. I booked both and had the same trouble. Viator should print the price and the fact that opted for the optional items in future to prevent problems when we arrive at our destinations.

This is definitely a tourist trap kind of tour. Its not that the tour itself was bad, but there is nothing to it. Ride a little train and see some nature. You dont even get to the end of the continent, just a lake....

Spectacular scenery. While the tour we purchased was the english speaking tour, and did include some small amount of english, it was largely in spanish. This is a tourist hotspot, so there are tons of other tour busses and lines for everything. Our purchase included the train, but that was not clear to the tour operator and they wanted me to pay again for the train. After a few calls back to the home office they honored the voucher and we got the last two seats on the train with no time to visit the station, which looked very interesting. Once we got going, everything was peachy. The park is a true nature preserve and not full of rubber tomahawk tourist shops which I appreciated. We hit it on a clear day...bonus!

The train ride was nice but I would not consider it a great tour we rode a few feet then stopped to take pictures of the surroundings. When I ask the guide why there were so many dead tree trunks she said because of the weather. There must be more to it than that.

If you do not speak fluent Spanish do not take this tour. The tour guide spoke primarily Spanish and her translation was limited at times. She was much more interested in booking additional tours. She was not engaging and appeared to have limited knowledge of the sites. _br/_ When I booked this tour was told we would be notified of the time of pick up and place. This took the exchange of many emails and was told to meet at 730 am and was not picked up until 9 then the tour guide initially told me we were not on her list. I wouild not use this company again and someone should teach the tour guide in order to be good at what she does she needs a script and knowledge of her surroundings to assure she receives a tip. My only tip is for her to get a script and practice so she comes across as if she knows what she is talking about.

Tour operator Rumbo Sur did not have the Train option information, which we had paid for. They did, however, make things right by paying for it at the park. Not blaming Rumbo Sur, but somewhere there was incomplete communication on our purchase of the tour. Made for a very stressful situation.

The train was fantastic. Our 6 year old son loved it. The rest of the tour stopped at some gorgeous places. The bus was incredibly hot and that plus very windy roads made for a lot of of nausea. A smaller bus or van would have made the trip a lot more enjoyable by the end. The tour guide was very knowledgable about the area. Since the tour is subcontracted out at least twice, you don't get any response when trying to make enquiries. We wandered around until the tour guide happened to bump into us. We had no idea where they were picking us up and never received responses to our emails days ahead inquiring about this. The tour itself is worth it, just frustrating working with faceless companies.

Enjoyed the tour and the live tour guide was great. On the train, the sound of the audio guide was not good - not quite loud enough to hear over the chatter of others in the train car and not crisp/clear enough. So, I missed a lot of the commentary, which was quite a disappointment. This was true in English AND in Spanish.

Loved the train but a half day is too short to enjoy the National park. Only includes a total of 30 minutes walking. I stayed in the park longer but had to pay another 200 Arg to get back to the city and the coastal trail was not well marked.

The trip was a blast, however the train ride is highly overpriced. This is no fault of viator, the park simply charges ARS500 for the ride. While the train ride was interesting and I enjoyed the views and history, it is more of a tourist trap than anything.

Landscape is really amazing. The drawback came from the fact that the group was made by 37 Spanish and Portuguese audience + we 2 speaking English. The English stories were cut to almost 10%

Our tour guide gave us our first introduction to Tierra del Fuego. She was communicative good command of English. We had a large group but she was attentive to questions. Pickup and drop off was seamless_br/_ Remember to bring cash to pay for entry to nAtional park. We didn't take optional trainride

Friendly and knowledgeable tour guide, stunning scenery although I'm not sure the train ride was worth the price paid. This trip could easily be done without the train ride and still be thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommended.

Entrance to the park is not included - more money on an already expensive tour. Tour not as extensive as Id hoped. Train ride is not worth the money.

I really liked the train ride. I think without the add-on of the train ride, this tour would not be as nice. The tour guide was not very good and the operating company made it very clear that they did not want to do hotel pick up and drop off. Viator was very helpful in resolving these issues, but the less-than-enthusiastic tour guides and general refusal to do hotel pick-up/drop-off made me wish I had used another company as all local companies do the same circuit.

Tours on a big bus are inherently boring. We could hardly understand the tour guide's English explanations, which were always very short compared to the Spanish explanations.

The trip was excellent and lots of background history. I was very pleased we did the End of the World Train as part of the trip. Although we did not have great weather (rain) we had a very enjoyable morning and I think it is a must for all tourists to Ushuaia.

Review by:   Charles W,    December 2014 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Was not worth the money paid. Mild chaos in buying getting the park entrance fee, etc with loads of bus tourists. Sitting in a very tight space on the narrow gauge rail train. Cheesy explanations of what you were seeing - the English translation was often difficult to understand over th sound system. The sights seen on the crawling train could have been viewed and appreciated in about a tenth of the time. The secondary bus tour did take us to some interesting viewpoints - two, to be exact. Think it would have been better to take the hike along the coast - far cheaper, better scenery, far less crowded!

A nice little 1/2 day tour…………..train not taken as v expensive (you can book it at the station for cheaper) The bus option involved a lot of hanging about at the station (40 mins)……….. but then a couple of stops in the NP and a nice couple of walks / visit to the post office at the end of the world.

The sites were beautiful and sufficient time for seeing the landscape, even had time for lunch at the park. The guide and driver were fine. Very organized even for cruisers, the trip would have been double on the cruise excursion, this was the way to go!!!! Bus met us directly in front of cruise terminal.

This was a great tour which exceeded my expectations. I was pleasantly surprised that the tour allowed time to visit the end-of-the world post office. I brought my passport to be stamped as I was going to seek it out later in the day. The passport stamp, 9 postcards, and the relevant stamps were $39 USD. I was able to fill them out later that day and mail from BA hotel. Also included was a visit to the end of the Pan American Highway. There were many photo opts and the fact that it was beautifully sunny, warm day enhanced the visit.
