Wellington's Lord of the Rings Locations Tour including Lunch

Wellington, New Zealand

Explore Middle-earth on this 'Lord of the Rings' location tour. Re-create scenes from 'The Lord of the Rings' book and movies, and see how Middle-earth was created in the beautiful countryside outside Wellington. Go behind the scenes on a visit to the Weta Studios, where 'The Lord of the Rings' movies were produced, and see famous movie locations including the Greenbelt, the Hutt Valley and the gorgeous native forest park that re-created Rivendell. Enjoy a 'Lord of the Rings' lunch and hear insider gossip on how the movies were made on this 'Lord of the Rings' tour in Wellington.

Begin your The Lord of the Rings location tour exploring the city locations of Mount Victoria and the 'Greenbelt', then take a 40-minute walk through the Outer Shire. This location includes the famous 'Get off the road' scene from The Lord of the Rings movie, the 'shortcut to mushrooms' as well as the Black Rider scenes and many more. Your tour leaders are knowledgeable fans of The Lord of the Rings who know their subject inside out.

Next, spend some time at the Weta Studios for an inside look at the Wellington film industry and the studios where The Lord of the Rings movies were produced.

Your visit to Weta includes the new 'Window into Workshop' exhibition, which takes you on a guided tour of the inner workings of the Weta Studios and film production company operated by The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.

Watch a short film showcasing the digital side of Weta and have an opportunity to peruse the Weta cave museum and gift shop.

After the morning’s excitement, it's time for a Lord of the Rings-themed, Orc-sized lunch at Scorch-O-Rama cafe.

Having seen how The Lord of the Rings movies were produced, visit the sites where the movies were filmed and see why Peter Jackson chose to film in this amazing part of the world. Spend the afternoon exploring The Lord of the Rings film locations in the Hutt Valley, with stops including the Hutt River (Great River Anduin) and Harcourt Park (Gardens of Isengard and where the Orcs filled the trees).

Finally, visit Kaitoke Regional Park which was the setting for Rivendell. Situated in a thousand-year-old New Zealand native rainforest, you will see why the Elves chose to live here! See the location where Helms Deep and Minas Tirith were filmed, before returning to your Wellington hotel at the conclusion of your Lord of the Rings tour.

We loved the tour, it was one of the highlights of Wellington and indeed New Zealand. Weta studio was amazing, we learnt the tricks of the trade, seen props from Lord of the Rings and other films such as, Bladerunner 2049, Planet of the Apes and this highlighted how much Weta was on the international stage. Dave our guide was a mineful of information on Lord of the Rings and Wellington, was full of fun and very entertaining. We had a few laughs en route!_br/_ Our picnic lunch was very unexpected which we had at Rivendell. The food was so tasty. especially the traybakes and it was lovely to be able to have our lunch outside on location being very fortunate with the weather. Rivendell was excellent - surreal being in the actual location and Dave had cloaks and swords for authentic photo opportunities and other surprises on the way!_br/_ Would highly recommend this tour.

We are fans of LoR so the trip was really great with full of stories from the film plan. _br/_ Of course in most of locations there are no evidence of LoR scenes but still it was nice to be there. _br/_ The visit in WETA Workshop was really interesting._br/_ I expected more LoR gadgets and clothes to make the trip more for LoR fans. 2 swords, 2 capes was really not enough.

It was a must do for every Lord of the Rings fan! The guide was amazing, funny, lovely and had massive knowledge. I really enjoyed the whole tour from the beginning til the end. It was really bad to say goodbye. Having the props, photos and seeing the beautiful scenery was the best. I am recommending this trip to everyone, not only the LOTR fans. And the lunch was delicious!

Excellent tour! The guide was very knowledgeable and shared some interesting tidbits about the locations and production. The Weta workshop tour was fantastic. The lunch was nothing to write home about but the location was good._br/_ Well worth the money. Be sure to have a few extra days to explore Wellington and the surrounding area.

This is a fantastic tour for the true LOTR geek. We visited several filming locations and the still images of the scenes were offered for comparison. There was some hiking up and down hills so you need to be fit. Wyeth was one of the best parts of the tour - used to be a standup comic so he filled in transit time with Monty Python wit. The Weta tour and the lunch nearby were both fantastic. Also lots of behind the scenes filming stories from Wyeth which were much appreciated by all the Hobbit Geeks.

This tour was interesting, however, you should really be an avid Lord of the Rings fan to fully appreciate the tour of visiting set locations and looking at the places where scenes were shot. We did enjoy visiting the studio and having a tour there. The tour guide was entertaining and took very good care of his passengers.

If you are a Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, or Peter Jackson fan, if you are holidaying in Wellington NZ, this is a total compulsory tour to participate in. The tour company Rover with Grant as our guide were absolutely terrific. We covered just about every aspect of the movie sites, complete with a laminated pictures of the sets/scenes, to view, before and after sets in folder form. Very professional._br/_ Highly recommended.

It was a learning experience as I had no idea how involved New Zealand Weta studios was in the movie world. Our guide at Weta was full of information and introduced quite a few dedicated people who were totally involved with their tasks._br/_ The ladies who guided us on our tour of the sites of various scenes in the movies were both knowledgeable and humorous in their presentations

The tour of Weta Studios was awesome and lunch was incredible. Our only issue was pouring down rain which made walking through the forest and glade quite a challenge.

My daughter and I decided to take a trip to NZ. I am not particularly a LOTR fan but my daughter is a HUGE fan so I agreed to go on this tour...It was FANTASTIC! Our guide was timely and picked us up at our hotel. He was also very knowledgeable and funny. He gave behind the scenes trivia about each spot, had movie photos to compare the area to the scene and gave more than enough time for photos and questions. Lunch was delicious and in an adorable, movie fan cafe. The workshop tour was also quite fascinating. After our tours we also visited Hobbiton I decided to watch through the movies again...I enjoyed them so much more this time! Anyone who is even the slightest fan should DEFINITELY do this tour it is well worth the price.

A damp but fun day seeing sites around Wellington where the Lord of the Rings was filmed. INteresting back stories from our gruide Laura of the Rings. Weta Workshop is a must see. How they create the amazing effects for movies is little short of magic. Lunch in Scorchorama was very tasty. Would recommend to anyone who is interested in Lord of the Rings or movie making.

This tour is one of the best - I would definitely recommend taking the full day tour over the 1/2 day tour, if you have the time. From start to finish with an excellent lunch, had a wonderful day. Chewy is an amazing tour guide. The Weta Caves - wow too. What a terrific way to spend your day. Thank you Chewy for making this tour one of the best.

It was a rainy day, but the tour guide Chuy provided umbrellas. Lots of climbing in the morning. The tour of Weta was interesting, but a bit underwhelming. I was expecting a more interactive experience, more details on the production of special effects. The Weta portion was primarily a video highlighting various effects from past films. The rest of it consisted of showing us props, most of which weren't used in any of the films, and also most of which we couldn't touch. The most interesting parts of this tour were the visits to locations used in LOTR. Also, the themed lunch was a bit forced. The regular menu looked to be more promising. So, why am I rating this 4 stars? Primarily for the tour of locations. Also, how could one be a fan and NOT visit Weta? Finally, the guide Chuy was a real fan, and his enthusiasm added a lot to the tour.

This was a fantastic tour. I'm a large fan or The Lord of the Rings, but it would be entertaining for someone who may not be as familiar with the books or movies. We saw beautiful landscapes and learned a lot about how they filmed the movies in each location, and we had a tour of Weta Studios, where we had an exclusive look at the work that goes into making the characters' weapons, clothing, and makeup so magnificent. Plus, we had a great LOTR-inspire lunch! W even learned some fun trivia about the director and actors! This was definitely a worthwhile experience.

Such a beautiful, adventure filled day. Jackson and Maddie were our tour guides and made the trip great for us. My husband and I are huge Lord of the Rings fans so it was just so awesome to stand where so many of our favorite scenes were filmed. The tour guides brought photos of the actual scenes so we could literally see exactly where everything was set up, and we learned so many fun extras from filming that makes me super excited to re-watch the movies. The staff was very knowledgeable and made the tour even more fun by bringing a few props for us to use in photos. Then we went to Weta workshop. Wow! Amazing to see the things they have created for so many beloved movies and shows. We even saw one of the world's top sword makers in action. He made all the weapons for Lord of the Rings as well as many others. The people who work for Weta are so proud of their work and have such a huge dedication and talent for what they do, and this was very evident through the tour. Lunch was also included at an awesome beach cafe with a comic book theme. The cast from Lord of the Rings used to eat there many times after filming. Food was great, big portions. By the time we got to Rivendell, it was raining pretty hard but we still spent a lot of time learning about the sets and taking photos. Such beautiful places. Very fun day

Not being a big LOTR fan okay - I have not seen any of the movies I was a bit concerned but our guide was very entertaining and having her explain what scene had taken place where we were has made me want to watch them. There is a bit of hilly walking which folks need to be aware of. Lunch at the Scorching Bay Cafe was delicious and I really did enjoy the muffins and cold drinks provided at the Rivendell stop.

Amazing day with a great guide. Jackson was super funny, so sweet and answered every single question. The group was small 10 people and a really fun group of people. The locations were amazing and not so easy to find by yourself, and i learned a lot of stories about each scene. _br/_ The lunch was not only delicious but in a place you need to see!

Everything about this trip was great. Our guide Mike was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He had a wealth of information to help us relate the scenery we were seeing to its part in the films. We had great fun hiding in the hobbit hole and wearing swords and cloaks in Rivendell for some great pictures. Lunch at Scorchorama was very tasty and the end of the trip finished nicely with coffee and cakes. The Weta cave tour was also very good. Overall, great value for money and a great day out. Ask for Mike and you won't be disappointed.

Our tour was nicknamed Laura of the Rings and it was very appropriate. We had an amazing tour guide, Laura, who definitely had a passion for the books and movies. She was able to share so much information about the filming and we had a ton of fun scouting out the film locations and doing some scene reenactments! My 15 year old son said this was his favorite tour and we had even visited Hobbiton!
