Located just 15 miles (24 km) from York, Castle Howard is a short drive or public bus journey from the city. Make your own way to the site (own expense), and then gaze in amazement as you approach the grand home. Its statuesque facades are decorated with carvings, coronets, ciphers and coats of arms as well as a frieze of seahorses and cherubs.
Topped with a large masonry dome, Castle Howard is highlighted dramatically by the vast, rolling greenery that surrounds it. Head inside with your entrance ticket, and enjoy exploring the site at your leisure. Pass by the statues and urns and walk through the grand entrance. In the house, the grandeur continues. From the Antique Passage to the Great Hall, the Long Gallery to the private chapel, there’s something to enjoy around every corner.
Make your own way through room after room of inspiring architecture and decor, stopping to marvel at the world-renowned art collection covering the walls. Gathered over centuries by succeeding generations of the Howard family, the collection boasts many incredible pieces. The majority of the artwork was collected by the 3rd, 4th and 5th earls who purchased many of the pictures as they toured Europe.
Perhaps stop in at one of the exhibition rooms and check out Castle Howard’s changing program of displays. Previous exhibitions have included the story of the house’s restoration following the 1940 fire that destroyed the dome and nearly 20 of its rooms.
After exploring the main house, head outside and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding woodlands. The grounds are studded with beautiful statues, stunning fountains and picturesque lakes. Breathe in the fresh air as you stroll around the gardens and enjoy the wide, open space.
How long you spend at Castle Howard is up to you, but many visitors find three hours to be sufficient. When hunger hits, refuel with a meal and drinks at the Courtyard Café (own expense) or — if you want to shop — treat yourself or a loved one to a souvenir from one of the shops.

Excellent place to visit lots of history. Many statues going back to BC period. Garden good to walk around. Used the tripadvisor voucher. Interesting reception staff said had not seen one of these before. But no trouble getting in.
