Steam Trains, Whitby, and the North York Moors Full-Day Tour from York

York, United Kingdom

Explore the stunning North York Moors by road and steam train on this wonderful small-group day trip from York. Travel through the beautiful Yorkshire countryside and visit the fabulous seaside town of Whitby, famous for its association with Captain James Cook and featured in Bram Stoker's Dracula, before boarding a steam train for a journey across the majestic North York Moors. You'll see the best of the Moors, spend time by the seaside and visit the charming railway station made famous as 'Hogsmeade Station' in the Harry Potter films.

You'll meet your guide at 8:45am in the heart of York, close to York Minster, and hop into your climate-controlled minivan for the day's excursion across the North Yorkshire countryside.

First, drive 45 minutes or so to the historic market town of Helmsley on the edge of the Moors. Explore the charming town, its pretty church and medieval castle (own expense), before the tour continues into the moors. Admire the rugged, windswept landscapes as you climb to the stone village of Hutton-le-Hole, where sheep graze freely on the common land.

At the North York Moors National Park, your guide will explain the geological and natural processes that shaped this striking landscape. Discover the region's mining and farming heritage and ancient history as you stroll across the heather.

It's just a short hop to North Yorkshire's striking coastline and the seaside town of Whitby, where you'll have three hours at leisure to explore at your own pace, and perhaps enjoy a fish-and-chips lunch. You may just wish to wander the picturesque harbor, explore the cobbled streets, historic cottages, and beautiful beach, or shop for Whitby jet.

Or you can discover Whitby's connection to Australia at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, delve deep into the world of Dracula at St. Mary's Church or the Dracula Experience Museum, or take a boat cruise from the harbor to discover the coastline (own expense).

From Whitby, it's back in the van to journey up through Sleights and onto the village of Goathland, nestled at the bottom of a wide valley surrounded by the heather-clad hills of the North York Moors. Fans of Heartbeat, the long-running ITV drama series, will recognize this as Aidensfield: you'll have chance to visit the Aidensfield Arms, pop into Aidensfield Stores and Post Office, and see what's happening at Scripps Garage.

Love Harry Potter? Don't miss the chance to capture pictures at Goathland station, which did duty as Hogsmeade Station for the filming of the Harry Potter movies. After you've explored the station, it's time to board a steam train for a nostalgic steam-hauled journey across the Moors (own expense). Snake through valleys and heathland for 18 miles (29 kilometers) in restored heritage carriages to the medieval market town of Pickering. Here you'll rejoin the minibus for the 40-minute journey back to York, arriving around 5:45pm.

Really enjoyed the day and the tour guide Peter was a really nice fellow. Good value, well ran and I would happily use Grand Yorkshire again without hesitation.

This is an excellent tour and to be recommended. Tour guides, Chris and Pete, couldn't have been more accommodating and were both informative and entertaining throughout the day. Plenty time for photo opportunities, exploration, refreshments and breathing in the fresh Yorkshire air. Loved it!

Lovely day trip. The only thing disappointing was we didn't have much time in Aidensfield. we would have liked to look around there a bit more and bought a few more things._br/_ Really enjoyed Whitby!

Peter was knowledgeable and funny. The entire experience was great. I especially love that we get free time to choose our activities at each different location. I am a solo traveler and appreciate the freedom these tours provide. Highly recommended tour.

This was a great tour, mainly because our driver, Chris, really knew a lot about the area and his commentary was very entertaining and also informative. As the weather was inclement he gave us an option instead of staying in Whitby which was appreciated by some in our group. We would recommend this tour to anywone who is in York for long enough to sacrifice a day.

I really appreciated the chance to see the moor, visit Whitby Abbey and take the steam train. Added bonus was starting our train ride in Hogsmeade Station Goathland.

A great day out for our mixed group ranging from 12 years old to 81. Peter is a local, very familiar with the area and open to any number of questions about what you see on the tour. The steam train tops off a great day.

Me and my wife enjoyed the day to go out in the country and see a older fishing town and to take a ride on the old train. there were another couple from Australia and two lady's from Italy and were all very nice people so it made the day a lot of fun would do it again just to change the pace.

We had an excellent time on our tour and a large amount of the credit goes to our guide. He was fantastic and provided continual insight into the local place names and took care of us in a very personal way.

Highly recommend this tour exploring the Heartbeat country, I particularly loved Whitby and Goathland, and the steam train trip. Fantastic day, one of many highlights on my trip to York.

We had 4 days in York and thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. Our guide, Chris, had first hand knowledge of the area. A very very pleasant day, would recommend.

Fabulous driver even though he did not get our booking from Viator which made him over booked. He worked until it was worked out and had a wonderful tour. Our driver and guide was Chris.

My husband and I spent a pleasant day with Chris and our British companions, learning about the ecology and culture of the Yorkshire moors and dales, exploring the seaside town of Whitby, and enjoying a steam train ride through a lush green valley. A native of Hutton-le-Hole, the town where sheep roam free and the people are fenced in, Chris conveyed his love and knowledge of the region with humor and enthusiasm. The three hours of free time in Whitby gave us ample time to explore the vanished religious community of Whitby Abbey through the historic site's recordings, plaques, and museum displays. And we'll never forget the 199 steps! Definitely worth the price....

This was a great trip. The tour guide took on us through the Moors on back roads giving us a rich and beautiful view of the Moors. When we got to Whitby, he gave us a few ideas of what to see, but mostly we all just explored the town in our own way and came back 2.5 hours later to share experiences. This trip is absolutely worth taking.
