Girona, Figueres and Dali Museum Day Trip from Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

Discover the medieval city of Girona and town of Figueres, the birthplace of Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí, on this partly guided day trip from Barcelona. Enjoy a guided walking tour around Girona’s delightful Old Town to see its Cathedral, former Jewish Quarter and picturesque pastel-colored houses crowded along the Onyar River. After free time for lunch in the city, continue by coach to Figueres to visit its impressive Dalí Theatre-Museum, home to more than 1,500 Dali artworks and curiosities. Finish with free time in Figueres before returning to Barcelona.

Leave central Barcelona by air-conditioned coach and travel to north Catalonia to the walled city of Girona, on the Onyar River.
As you travel, hear how Girona became one of Spain’s most prosperous cities in medieval times: a wealth that saw the construction of its beautiful Romanesque and Gothic buildings.

After roughly 1.5 hours, arrive in the city and stroll around the Old Town with your guide. Delve into the old-world streets and Jewish Quarter, home to one of Catalonia’s most significant Jewish communities in the Middle Ages.

See the baroque Cathedral exterior and admire the views of Girona’s pastel-colored houses perched along the Onyar’s banks. Then, after free time for lunch (own expense), continue by coach to Figueres, the birthplace of 20th-century Spanish artist, Salvador Dalí.

On route, hear Dalí's extraordinary life story and learn how the moustachioed genius remodeled Figueres’ Dalí Theatre-Museum from the town’s original Municipal Theater.

Admire the museum’s striking Dalí-esque façade and then head inside to view its collections of Dalí’s art, before seeing some of his stylized jewels at the neighboring Dalí Jewels exhibition.

Wrap up with some free time to explore Figueres on your own before your tour ends back in Barcelona.

We happen to visit Girona during their annual flower show, very fun! There were floral art installations of various sizes throughout the town. Our local guide was wonderful, very knowledgeable about the town's history. For Game of Throne's fans there were a couple of places that they filmed, would you know this if you were standing in front of them, without being told where you were?? We didn't, lol. We didn't spend any time checking out the town of Figueres, we wanted to spend it all in the Dali Musuem, and it didn't disappoint! But I'm an artist so I might be a little biased : Alex our guide was fantastic. He made sure you drew your own conclusions about the art, as Dali intended. He also reminded everyone that Dali did not want people to see it all in some type of order, which I loved. It was very crowded so we walked around and only looked in places with the fewest people. We were still able to see everything! While his most iconic work is not there, these are the pieces he chose not to sell, which I found interesting. Very inspiring for an artist!

This tour and the Tour Guide, Alex were the best. However the tour company, Viator, leaves a lot to be desired. We were told be at the pickup point at 8:00 and no later than 8:15. People were showing up at 8:30 and we did not leave until 8:45. The ones that showed late are the people that crowd on the bus ahead of everyone else. People that show up on time should not be the ones that don't get a good seat._br/_ There was a big post that ran down the window at my seat and help block the view. Also my seat back was broken and would not stay up._br/_ If Viator were good business people they would issue a numbered boarding pass to you when you arrive. That way people that want to be late cannot crowd ahead of everyone else boarding the buses. _br/_ I would recommend a different tour company, one that cares more for their customers after they get your money..

The walk through Girona was thoroughly enjoyable. Our guide Anna was friendly and knowledgeable. She showed us through the town and explained all the sites. The Castle and Jewish areas are jaw dropping. The we were off to the Dali Museum in Figueres after stopping for a delightful lunch at a Girona café. I am a fan of Salvador Dali and could have spent more time looking but had a wonderful time. The jewels Dali designed are fabulous.

Girona was one of my favorite places we went during our trip to Barcelona. It was amazing. We could have spent all day there exploring this charming and beautiful village. _br/_ The Dali Museum was cool. Dali's is isn't really really my jam, but I could absolutely appreciate that I was in the presence of the work of one of the greats.

This was a really fantastic tour. There was ample time to explore both cities and the Dali Museum was the ultimate highlight.

Great trip and so worth it. Girona was great and a interesting place to go if you're a fan of Game of Thrones because they shot scenes there. The Dali museum is phenomenal. We could have stayed there all day if we could.

I loved Girona, a fun town full of lots of little alleys and things to explore. And the best was the Dali Museum. I've seen a lot of Dali's work in books and this blew me away. I left feeling so inspired and read to create a Dali-inspired sculpture for my garden.

This was an amazing excursion. We fell in love with Girona and its quiet enchanting streets and beautiful buildings. We ate lunch at a local cafe and later did a little shopping when we were on our own. _br/_ The tour of Dalis museum was mind blowing. I was never a big fan of Dali and his genre of art until this visit. He was a mad genius. The collection of his works is beautifully exhibited and really captures his vision and imagination. But then, we stopped in to tour his jewelry exhibit and that pushed everything over the top. Im a jewelry designer and his showcase of jewelry designs blew my mind. Stunning, gorgeous and beyond anything you have ever seen. Take this excursion!

Review by:   Theresa S,    January 2018 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The time allotted for this tour was insufficient. Our time in Girona was way to short failing to truly leave time to explore. We were strongly encouraged to eat lunch here since there would be no time in Figures. The Dali museum really only took one hour to maybe an hour and half. That left about an hour and half in the c town which really didn't have anything else to do. Secondly the dual languages were difficult. On the 1 1/2 bus ride the guide had to talk the entire time with out a rest. In the Dali museum one group had to wait over 1/2 hour fit the guide. I would suggest going on your own or finding a tour that was more efficient. One option would be to go to Figures first, grab lunch and spend more time in Girona.

The toor guide which have in Girona could tell us few things about the places where Game of thrones scenes were shot. _br/_ The audio guide machine have problems not only ours , have extra noises and lost the connection often._br/_ In Figueres must stay a little bit more, cause we had to visit two museum and we need time for rest too.

All aspects of this tour were beyond amazing! Girona was so beautiful and the tour guide was very knowledgeable and made us fall in love with the historical city. She also gave us some time to explore and enjoy each location before moving on, so we were able to savour the experience. Figueres and the Dali museum were mind-blowing. Seeing so much of Dali's work in one place made us not only appreciate his genius more, but also become overwhelmed with the scope of his work. This is definitely a museum that should be seen at one's own leisure to fully appreciate it, but the several hours we had with the tour were enough for a taste and a general amateur viewing.

This is an excellent way to see the fascinating old town of Girona, and the somewhat over-the-top Dali Theatre Museum. The trip was made on a very comfortable coach/bus. An on-board restroom would have be helpful, though we managed fine without it. Our guide, Marc, was very knowledgeable and friendly, though he spoke extremely fast in order to give explanations in both English and Spanish. The single unit hearing device no wires to get tangled up in was a real plus. On the down side, when the tour ended, we were dropped off at a busy and crowded plaza a couple of blocks from the tour office. Fortunately, we were able to navigate our way back to our hotel, but this could have been a real problem for some._br/_ Note - Because a previous Viator of Savannah, GA was booked for us by my sister-in-law, this review uses her name. My name is Dave.

I loved the tour to Girona - what an amazing city it is! And with plenty of time to wander on my own I really enjoyed it. Figures is a charming little city and while I'm not a big Dali fan, as an artist it was important to see his works in his museum. It's a trip in itself. The Tour guides/staff were knowledgeable and friendly and the bus was comfortable. The worst part of it was the crying baby - almost all the way back to Barcelona - and I suppose you cannot tell people they can't bring children, but it did make the ride home unpleasant for everyone else. Other than that I enjoyed the tour.

Should probably be a real Dali fan to book this one. Two hours in the museum can saturate the brain if you aren't accustomed to his style. Girona is nice. Really enjoyed climbing to the top of the wall and looking down at the city.

Figueres: This small sleepy town has one of the most bizarre museums ever! The trip to Figueres was interesting and fun. Although both Girona and Figueres was a lot of fun, I would have liked a little more time in Girona to look around as it is the set for some of the Game of Thrones fictional sites. I'm a big fan and would have liked to stay there for a longer period of time during this day.

So glad we took the option of doing this tour rather than get ourselves to Girona, Figueres and Dali Museum on the day after our long flight from Australia. Despite all that was happening in Barcelona at this time, the tour ran to schedule, was well organised and extremely enjoyable. It took so much pressure off our tired bodies and minds and provided us with a very positive experience and a very enjoyable day. The guide was informative and we had a great balance of free and organised time at the sites. Would not hesitate to recommend this tour from Barcelona for anyone wishing to get the maximum experience from these sites.

Certainly things you don’t see every day! If you have more than enough time to thoroughly explore Barcelona and want a great dose of Dalí, this is a great tour. The bus was comfortable and the pacing was great. Girona is rich in history and very interesting—followed by a great Dalí experience.

The tour provided was very mediocre. It covered the sites note in a very minimal way. When I booked it on the phone I was told it was a small group tour. It was over 50 people. The tour guides lacked enthusiasm and passion and it felt more like they were there more to herd people then to guide. While I loved Girona and the Dali Museum I could have taken the train and done both on my own for the way the sites were presented by the local tour operator.

Very professional tour with easy access to sites. Guides were well informed and responded to questions. Unfortunately, our tour was bi-lingual so English speakers had to wait for explanation in Spanish and vice versa. On some level, this was great because you could just look around and absorb the information. On another level, it meant that we had limited time in Girona, but it did not impact Dali Museum portion much. If you are Jewish and interested in Jewish Museum and more of the Jewish quarter, just leave the organized tour early and visit the Museum on your own and wander in that area. Girona and the Dali Museum are well worth the time to visit and this tour made it easy to figure out what to see and where everything was without having to struggle with maps. I always use a tour book anyways, but this tour made seeing both top sites easy to do on a limited time schedule. Good tour company.

Dali was a bizarre genius and his museum alone would have made this trip worthwhile. Girona too is a picturesque town with an outstandingly beautiful cathedral and well worth the visit. Enough free time to wander around Girona for a bit and to explore the Dali museum completely.

Great tour. Fun to visit small towns away from Barcelona. Girona is a jewell. The old town is a window into Medieval Spain. Used the free time to tour the Jewish quarter. The synagogue is bring developed as a museum as the site is excavated by archeologists. The Dali Museum was well done even my wife who is not a Dali fan enjoyed the tour. Our tour guides were very knowledgable. Get away from the crowds in Barcelona and experience the Costa Brava.
