Old West and First Nations Heritage Day Trip From Calgary
Calgary, Canada
Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump: It might sound like a news headline, but it's actually a UNESCO site that you can visit on this trip to southern Alberta from Calgary. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved sites of the 6,000-year-old practice of buffalo jumping, a hunting tradition you will learn more about from your guide of First Nations descent. This tour will also take you to Bar U Ranch Historic site, a place that commemorates the history of the Canadian ranching industry and development of Canada.
Meet your guide and board your air-conditioned coach near Calgary Tower for your day trip to explore southern Alberta, known as Canada’s cowboy country. Take a scenic drive through open country of grazing pastures before arriving at Bar U Ranch Historic Site, a place nestled in the foothills of southern Alberta with the majestic Rocky Mountains as the backdrop. Here, learn about the history of the Canadian ranching industry and evolution of the industry and development of Canada.
Next, stop at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage site. For thousands of years, the Native people of the Northern Plains hunted buffalo for food and clothing by chasing them off a cliff’s edge. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is one of the oldest and most important hunting sites of this age-old practice that is known as buffalo jumping.
When you reach the interpretive center, explore on your own or follow a guide to learn about the history and traditions of the people who lived in these foothills where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains before heading back to Calgary.

Loved the Buffalo Jump and U Bar Ranch, excellent experience! Only thing I would change: lunch cut heavily into the morning activity buffalo jump, and I would have preferred to have a bit more time at the site to look around.

I highly advise this tour to anyone interested in the history of the region. _br/_ The Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a great World Heritage Site. The location, exhibition are guides are amazing. I have learnt a lot. The skansen in Calgary is well-done, engaging, especially for school kids.

It was a very long drive just to see the buffalo jump. Fort Mcloud was missed out and didnt really have long enough at Heritage Park

I had a great time our driver was great and answered all our questions. Worth doing on a Wednesday to see the dancing it is amazing. The only down side was lack of time we felt there wasnt enough time at both places.

Too much for one day. First Nations - great but to include the Heritage Village as well - too much

Good tour - but could have spent more time at the Buffalo jump instead of time spent at Fort. The trip to Heritage Park seemed more of a taster due to time constraints. One of our fellow travellers was somewhat physically impaired - and found some of the tour extremely difficult.
