Embark on a self-guided exploration of the Fort Calgary Museum and Interpretive Centre. Read all about the history of Calgary and Western Canada, including the formation of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Try on a Mountie uniform or get 'locked' in a jail cell. The museum takes about 1.5 hours to explore, though you're welcome to spend more time reading all of the stories. During summer months, interpreters and RCMP veterans may be on hand to answer your questions and to share their own stories of Calgary and the Force.
Visit the place where Calgary began! Situated at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, Fort Calgary has been important to the Blackfoot and other Indigenous peoples for centuries. When the North West Mounted Police (now the RCMP) arrived in 1875, it was a natural place for them to build a fort. Made of simple logs, this fort stood for only a few years, but the site continues to be a important marker of Calgary's heritage.
Today, the Fort Calgary Museum and Interpretive Centre provides an engaging overview of Calgary’s vibrant history, and the tumultuous history of this site. Your museum visit includes opportunities to try on an RCMP uniform, get ‘locked’ in a jail cell, and lots more. While the 'Fort' that you may imagine no longer stands, you are welcome to explore the 36 acres of outdoor parkland after you visit the indoor museum, and enjoy the new outdoor art exhibit, which outlines the original the footprint of the 1875 fort.
